I want to change the harddisk --- Problems!

I have a running server, which I do not want to have much interrupt. I have therefore installed a new server, but with another SCSI card and Ethernet card. Before swapping (actually adding) this new harddisk to the real server, I changed all the YaST parameters according to the production machine and made the mk_initrd The old INITRD_MODULES have been: ncr53c8xx reiserfs For the new one I added aic7xxx_old tulip to ncr53c8xx reiserfs aic7xxx_old tulip REBOOT! It starts up with the screens and it show me all things it want to do, but than it tells me to uncompress with hours full of dots. I don't know what could cause this, others than the ncr and aic7 have the confilict. I reboot with the Resecue from the CD and renamed /boot/initrd and /boot/initrd.suse with the same result! I try to use in the boot screen: linux ncr53c8xx reiserfs with no success either. Sendmail question

How do I stop allowing sendmail to relay. Right now I was testing my sendmail configuration and found out I can relay through my mail server using other domains. Please Help. I can not seem to figure out how to close this obvious miss configuration in sendmail 8.11.6/8.11.3/SuSE Linux 8.11.1-0.5. Thanks for the help. -- Bob Barish

ReiserFS code update --> troubles with unmounting

Hi all, Well i done it again 8( I kept my hands off reiserfs rpm in kernel section of suse's ftp for a while, and yesterday i decided to finally upgrade it.. After installing new rpm (in section for kernel 2.4.16 of suse7.3) i am always getting /dev/hda6 ( my root partition) "not clearly unmounted". At the boot it doesnt get checked (i.e fsck wasnt enforced), but always complaining about not being umounted at the restart of shutdown. Any suggestions (other than downgrade rpm 8)) ? I have four different distros running seven different kernels just on the five systems I have at home. ... Mandrake 8.1, which has a lot of bells and whistles, didn't include wireless utilities or support for CardBus or my ORiNOCO card ... Caldera has a nasty habit of providing upgrades, such as those to the kernel, but not upgrading the kernel version itself ... leave the source as 2.4.2. Needless to say, some software refuses do build when 2.4.4 or better is required. ... I'm afraid I don't have [a solution]. But I do know that what I consider only niggling annoyances can become show- stoppers for newbies. Hello SuSE folkz, It's may be a stupid question but I couldn't find a decent answer on it. Assume that you have registered three domains: xyz1.com xyz2.com and xyz3.com with different IP's They all pointed to your ISP your_isp.com You have just ONE static IP from your ISP. ISP runs DNS with NAT, so all your three registered domains are pointing to your box. Now the question: Is it possible to create three virtual independent domains/websites on you box using just one IP provided by your ISP? Thank you very mush in advance for any information. Alex P.S. NETATALK limitsize Problem

Hi, I have a problem with Netatalk 1.5 from SuSE 7.3. In short, in order old Macs get working with 40 GB shared volume NETATALK should report that share size is only 2 GB, otherwise old Mac recognizes 22 MB folder with a lot of small files as being over 400 MB (old MacOS does understands only volumes with fixed number of sectors). NETATALK has an option called limitsize, however, I have been unable to get it working. I have tried "~ option:limitisize", "~ limitsize:2048000000", "~ option:limitisize:2048000000". Tilde ("~") means user-home-dir sharing by default. I have removed all other options, but it does not seem working anyway. It seems this options is just being ignored (or may be I have used wrong syntax?). Thanks in advance for any suggestions. Andrei

SuSE Acrobat problem

Whenever I try to download a ".pdf" file NETSCAPE gets frozen so that I cannot even close its window by clicking on the upper right corner. It looks like it is not responding to the Window Manager commands any more. To close the NETSCAPE windows I have to look for its process ID (#ps -ef | grep monville) and then kill it (#kill <process ID>). I noticed a message pops up which reads "Acrobat plug-in. Could not launch Acrobat". I wonder what it means given that the Acrobat Reader running on SuSE is part of the installation kit ... Thank you in advance for your attention. Maura E.M.

Any success stories about subj i heard were based on manual compilations -- i simply can not afford it myself -- it would take coulpe of days i think, or even more :-) . I just installed SuSE 7.3 and am pretty happy with it. One thing, however... Is there any way to disable the gray and green border with SuSE logo in tty1 when using an ascii interface vice graphical? I need that tty to run a particular application and with that extra stuff in there my app is very hard to work with. Secondly, the font size in ascii interface mode is unacceptably small. Is there a way to increase the font to say 14 or so? I have to put my face right next to the screen with reading glasses on in order to read the text. Thanks... Best wishes, Gary

Then its window would open but no modules would load. I tried many diferent things including re-installing YaST2 from the dvd, and trying to install the 7.3 versions of YaST2 from SuSE (and getting REALLY FRUSTRATED) I finally did a full re-install. (By the way when I posted this problem to the list it scared people so much that they turned their attention to some stupid flame war just to avoid thinking about it ;-p After my re-install I foolishly installed the SuSE7.3 glibc rpms again but fortunately ran YaST2 soon enough afterwards to be pretty confident that it (SuSE7.3 glibc) was the cause of my problem. My second attempt was not a success except in that I was able to diagnose the conflict between the glibc from the 7.3 updates with YaST2 from version7.2 hope this clears things up. dh ps. the susehelp.rpm from the 7.3 update site actually does seem to fix problems w/ the 7.2 update that yast installs.

Syncing Mail from Linux.

Anyone out there have any luck syncing mail from a Handspring Visor Platinum or other Palm OS device to Linux? I am using MultiMail for the Palm OS. The problem is that while there are both GNOME and KDE apps that do a decent job of syncing, there is no Palm OS app like MultiMail, that can sync with a Linux e-mail program. I often take my Handspring Visor on the road with just a Targus Stowaway keyboard and my Nokia 7110 mobile phone. This combo functions as well as a laptop, minus all of the weight. I simply download and send my e-mail via an IrDA connection betwen my Handspring and my mobile phone. When I return home, I can sync any mail that I have received or sent on my Palm OS device, to my desktop computer with the MultiMail Win or Mac conduit. Any ideas? Cheers, Brian

SuSE 7.3 uses lesstif 0.92.32-32. It seems that this is compatible with Motif 1.2. We need however a lesstif which is compatible with Motif 2.0. Why does SuSE have an old version of lesstif? Hi. I have installed WIN98 and SuSE 7.3 on a computer. First I installed WIN98, and choosed the whole harddisk as one partition. Next I installed linux using the choose_bar where I could choose how big the 2 partition should be. Now my question is, is it possible to get the bar again, to could remove the WIN98 partition, as I have WIN98 to run with VMware ?. Regards, Erik Jakobsen

I have it set up something like what you have said. With the excteption of: NETCONFIG = "_0 _1" (changed to NETCONFIG="_1") Also my eth0 is tulip (internal) and eth1 is 3c59x (external) IFCONFIG_1="dhcpclient" (but I will make that pppoe) I have done this with readhat 5.0, 5.2, 6.0 with out this much trouble. But for some reason, I have having a huge about of trouble. It seams wich ever card is mentioned last in /etc/modules.conf is the one that gets started. Also, dog(a)intop.net, I did what you have shown, and still only 1 card worked. Hi, During installation Yast2 detected it automatically. When booted lsmod shows loaded: usbmgr acm (modem) usb-uhci (non Intel spec usb) and one more i believe. Check 'dmesg |less' to see if it is not in activated yet! Also make sure your Bios gives the USB an IRQ. Kernel 2.4.16

Hello everyone - I seem to have run into a problem while upgrading to the 2.4.16 SuSE kernel. Here's what I have done: 1. Downloaded all necessary packages from ftp.suse.com (all RPM's from the kernel folder), installed them with YAST1 (by the way, what's the difference between installing a RPM with YAST and issuing rpm -Uvh?) 2. Went into /usr/src/linux and typed 'make menuconfig', then 'make dep', 'make bzImage', 'make modules' and 'make modules_install', followed by 'mk_initrd' 3. Copied bzImage to /boot, modified /etc/lilo.conf, run 'lilo' When I rebooted the system, chose 'mykernel' option and the screen went black and the computer hung. Well, I said, I made a mistake when compiling the system - so I cold-resetted teh system, chose the old 'linux' item and surprise! I could see the new ReiserFS modul loading (reiserfs 3.x.0k-pre10), the new modules (/lib/modules/2.4.16-4GB/kernel) and finally, the boot prompt greeted me with "Welcome to SuSE Linux 7.3 (i386) - Kernel 2.4.16-4GB (tty1)" So I wonder - what kernel did it choose? I checked lilo.conf once again and the 'linux' option loads the old kernel... beside that, under KDE, the sound doesn't work in some applications (Soldier of Fortune, for instance), and when I try to connect to the Internet, the message I get is that the pppd daemon could not be started. Helo all, I'm using 7.2. Is it safe if I download glibc 2.4.4 from ftp sites -- under updates for 7.3, and apply to my 7.2? Any prerequisit (such as make, cc maybe)? Hello, I have SuSE 7.3 installed, using KDE and Gnome, with KDE as default in startx. Today I've installed Ximian by their site. Installed OK. The problem is that Gnome desapeared, and I can't run Xinian. Gnome desapeared from susewm also. Do someone has an idea about the problem ??? Thanks, Parra

Setting PATH info for EVERYONE

Hey all, quick question. I need to update the PATH variable on my box for EVERYONE. To do this, I just created a profile.local script and export the path there. Since CRON does not run the profile, it doesn't pick up the new path. Because of this, my scripts can't located the setenv script (which sets my environment for all of my scripts/apps). How can I set it up so that it ALWAYS picks up that path? I was told that a workaround would be to execute my /etc/profile.local in each script. That would work, but it seems clunky. Hello again, I was just wondering if any of you have managed to make the TV-OUT option of a GeForce card actually work. I have read everything I could on this, but, guess what? No luck. When I issue 'startx', the server starts normally, everything is on my CRT screen, but nothing on TV. I have tried with both TwinView and non-TwinView configurations. Hi to all: It was not without some trepidation that I embarked on my attempt at downloading an RPM, in this case a bunch of no less than 8 for SuSE kernel 2.4.16, only because they're not available on a CD. I never tried downloading before because I know myself, and I know I don't have the patience for games. One thing I'm not is a masochist; banging my head against a wall isn't my preferred form of entertainment. I don't mind staying with one problem IF (big IF!) I see a steady, measurable progress. That's not the present case. End of rant. The three short RPMs (jfsprogs, modutils, reiserfs) d'l'ded without problems. The four 13 MBs were another story. Although eventually I got them all, none took fewer than three attempts. Then, it came the time for the last one, the 32 MB kernel-source. The first attempt went well until I had 28% down, when the progress window in Mozilla showed "Download complete." I thought "complete" meant 100%; it must be a new kind of math. Right away, the system asked for a file to d'l'd to. Since I ignored the request, it began d'l'ding to a /tmp file. After a short while, it started all over again, to *another* /tmp file. And then, still to another, a which point I cut out the connection. I looked in MC to make sure, the files were not a continuation of one to another, but started from the beginning. The next attempt was "complete" at 22%. One of the attempts died out at 1% (I called my ISP, to verify if there was something wrong on their part, I was assured there wasn't.) The last attempt, this morning, went well until I had already 54%, at which point it asked for another file. Sure... Since I have no previous experience, Q1- is this behavior normal? If you need more information, write me. Hi Yes, excellen camera! Have the Lexar reader with the flash memory installed in it. The USB picks it up at sda and sdb but how do I mount sda and sdb. Ok, I have suse 7.2 Card 1, 3c59x (external) Card 2, Linksys 10/100 [tulip] (internal) I can insmod the card that doesn't work, and it works, but if I reboot, it seams that the card I insmod is the only one working, and the other one isn't working. Question: Since updating to 7.3, I have been getting some strange things with my cd drives (hdc=cdrecorder & hdd=cdrom). Seems like I did have to set up my links for scd0 & scd1 to get them working again initially and have not seen problems with that since. Root window manager not working correctly

When I login using the gui login for root, the window manager is not KDE even though I select it in the login dialog. Login as user is OK. If I boot in run level 3, then login and startx in as root, it is OK. Does anyone know where the configuration file is that sets this up? (Suse 7.3) I think it ocurred when I tried the Blackbox window manager, although the window manager in root is something else, not sure which one as I have not looked at them all. Art

Hi, Using 2.4 kernel. Does anyone have a good example on how to create another ramdisk like the shmfs in /dev/shm? I've tried some ramdisk-howto's, but they dont seem to report usage properly with df. Hello all Has anyone compared SuSE linux performance on a mac architecture versus a PC(IBM clone)architecture? I'm just curious if there is any difference in speed if comparable machines were used.Assuming the two types can be compared.But we've all seen benchmark tests with each of their "native" OS's . I friend of mine gave me 6.4 for power PC and I've got and old 7600 laying around. So i think I'll give it a try.Any comments would we be extremely appreciated

Hi everyone OK how do I mount /dev/sda as a scsi device? I want to be able to write: mount -t scsi2 /dev/sda /mnt fs type scsi2 not supported by kernel if that makes sense as that's what cat /proc/scsi/scsi gives me. Is there a module somewhere? Hi! I have some questions about different subject. I hope that someone will be able to help me. First which FTP Server is best? I configured ProFTPD but I can't access it from another place. Why? Example, I'm at the University of a friend and I want to access my computer with the FTP, when it try to connect it tell me an error that I can access to it. If I try it on my PC, it works... So what to do to solve this problem. There is another FTP server that works fine and where the configuration is more easily? Do you suggest me another FTP Server? How to configure it well. Also, I would want to disable anonymous access and configure it for users access only. For that too, how to do it, I think I need to create a user on my computer and it's ok, but I'm not really sure. And for disable anonymous?? Next question. How to configure a SSH and telnet server on my computer? What I want to know is generally same informations that I asked higher for FTP Server. How to make it working well? Another question is for PDF on linux. If I have a web page in Konqueror example or a document in starOffice and I want to translate it in a PDF file, what I must do? Which program to use if any exists? I try with a web page in Konqueror to selecte PDF Writer in the printer list. But, this doesn't work. It creates a file, the contents of the web page is inside but really really really small... With the maximum zoom possible is still impossible to read the content... So how to do it and to make it working well? The last question is not really about Linux. Probably I should not post this question here but in the mean time, maybe someone have good suggestions. My computer is really not silent. I'm not able to read with concentration when the computer works. It is really a problem for me and I want to eliminate the noise... What must I buy. Someone can suggest me a good CPU Fan that doesn't make noise and too a good case with silent power supply? Is there an isolated case that don't keep heat inside and prevent from noise? I need to delete that last line I added to it!
