Ok ... I'm going to throw my Exchange server into the lake ... I just came across a nasty bug and Microsoft's solution is ... That totally blows my mind Buy the update M$ sells you junk then wants more money for you to fix that junk that sold you in the first place Does this make sense?
Don't throw the server into the lake!!! Its not the hardware vendor's fault. Just reformat the file system with Linux... THEN take your Exchange books and CDs and throw THEM into the lake!!!! Robert Friedrichshafen, Germany On Fri, 22 Feb 2002, Eric Carbone wrote:

That sort of depends on your needs. If you want a full replacement for exchange that you can hook your outlook clients to, Bynari has something called InsightConnector that will reportedly make any IMAP server look like an exchange server, with full support for calendaring, scheduling and everything. You could connect this to the cyrus IMAP server which is on SuSE's DVD. On the SMTP side there are a few alternatives. The best (most popular, most versatile, most used) is sendmail. Some people think this is too complicated and prefer simpler alternatives such as qmail or postfix. The drawback is a loss of features, but (arguably) a gain in reduced learning curve and perhaps better security (very arguable). Since you're running exchange I'm guessing you're not a home user, but rather in charge of a company network, so you may want to take a look at SuSE email server III as well. It's more expensive, but has gotten rave reviews, and I understand it has a good admin interface. And on the client side you may want to find an alternative to outlook. Ximian's evolution is probably the best alternative there. Perhaps not the best email client available, but likely the one closest to outlook, only without the viruses. regards Anders

What about replacing the Global Address List(GAL)B?? I know LDAP (slapd)will do the trick, but the Outlook clients will not connect like the GAL on Exchange. Has anyone successfully replaced the GAL? -- Tony Zafiropoulos FixMyVirus.com Cel: 314-504-3974 tonyz@fixmyvirus.com Best way to reduce your virus exposure? Our Outlook clients use the address lists from the LDAP-server thats part of the SuSE Emailserver 3-package. LDAP is hard to understand. E-mail server 3 gives you an interface to ldap, which makes that part easy. mvh... Morten Christensen

In the commercial side, you have at least SuSE Email Server III (you can find more info about it in SuSE site). There are more, including one from HP, and I think that Domino exist for Linux also (not sure if it counts as mail server :) If you only want a smtp/pop/imap server, installing most linux distributions out there will be enough, as nearly all have good servers for all this services included. Thanks doctors,
I've just setup a qmail e-mail server for the company I work for running on SuSE 7.2 Pro. It is the obvious choice. Go to www.qmail.org, get the 'Life with qmail' document and follow it step by step. Then go to www.inter7.com and get vpopmail, qmailadmin and sqwebmail. Afterwards, if you want to, get RAV antivirus for qmail, you can download a 60 day trial that work perfectly for 2 e-mail domains. Finally go to www.webmin.com and get webmin 0.92. That's it. The finest e-mail server you've seen. Oscar Ross Junior SysAdmin DSS de Mexico
