UPGRADE

I am truly amazed some one has found the upgrade to work and would like to know how this can be. I had to resort to install and remounting the /home aprtition I'd set up (boy am I glad I'd set a separate partition for /home otherwise I'd have lost all my settings) I'd sure like to know if anyone knows how upgrade works for some not others Craig Nelson

pop3 - APOP

Greetings, Do any of your have any recommendations for a reliable popper that supports APOP (and maybe SSL too?) besides qpopper? Or would qpopper be the way to go? I guess I'm looking for something that can do APOP but will fall back to plain if the MUA doesn't support it. modules.conf file missing!

Folks, During yet another complete re-install of Suse 7.1 I had the following problems: 1. Got errors during configuration of NIC and Sound cards. Never happened before. Error message in both cases was "Error writing to /etc/modules.conf file" which I couldn't understand till I quit Yast2 and looked at the modules.conf file and noticed it was missing! In my previous, installation, I had a modules.conf file with lots of stuff and lots of commented stuff, which is normal. 2. I reran Yast2 to configure the NIC card and got the same error. I quit, did a "touch modules.conf" and reran Yast2 and it completed configuring the NIC with no errors. I repeated for the Sound card and got the same old error again and the modules.conf file was gone!! 3. I re-created a modules.conf file and configured only the NIC card (LinkSys using the Tulip driver) and now it could not get an IP address from the router (DHCP mode) which worked perfectly fine a day earlier. Any idea what is happening here? Can I reproduce a current and complete modules.conf file without re-installing everything? By the way, if I create an empty modules.conf file, after booting I get a message that the modules.conf is newer than the modules.dep file. Help! Try: ps aux | grep -i "some expression" | grep -v "grep expression same as previous one" That always works. [ the -v flag reverses the sense of matching to dis-include what you were searching for in the first place. I use it here, so that the "grep program" is not returned ]. The "-i" option ignores case sensitivity. Hi David and all, Woops I should have said no applications like perfmeter or top, vmstat etc only using 'ps' or a another combination. Perhaps using nawk to sort and display ? Blank monitor after switching between virtual consoles

I have recently installed SuSE Linux 7.3 Professional on a system, which now behaves in a manner that I have never seen before: When the system has booted, I can log in through kdm and out again as any user on the system. If I switch to any of the virtual consoles tty1 through tty6 I can log in, but as soon as I log out again, I get a blank monitor. Trying to switch between virtual consoles or back to tty7 where X resides does nothing for me. The power-LED on the monitor is still green. The monitor's power-LED is amber if the monitor lacks signal or is in suspend-mode. The system has APM disabled, so that's not disturbing. What can this be? Best regards, David List

Linux and the DMCA

I read this in the register: Linux update withholds security info on DMCA terror http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/4/22536.html It seems Alan Cox is withholding security information about security updates to the 2.2 series kernel to American users (even blocking them from the site). He claims to fear the consequences of the DMCA by disclosing that info. Okay, I think he's making a political point. Because the DMCA doesn't prohibit this... and he's partly right, because poor Dimitry is still being charged and facing 25 years off jailtime. But by doing this, the American free-software foundation is harmed. The government is hardly going to notice this. We should target them for restricting freedom, not the people that are defending that freedom. Intermittent 7.3 sound problem

My AL440LX motherboard has a Yamaha OPL3-SA3 sound device. This was recognised by the 7.3 installation and was apparently configured correctly, but the sound only works *sometimes*. For example, when KDE starts I might or might not get sound effects and games may or may not produce sound. If it's not working, and I fiddle with one of the mixers to check the volume(s), or run up YaST2 to look at the sound configuration, it *may* magically spring into life and then work normally until I logout. I've not done enough experimentation to get a reliable scenario that always works or doesn't I'm afraid. The only strange behaviour I've seen are console messages complaining that modprobe can't locate a module called sound-slot-1, but YaST seems to be saying I only have sound-slot-0 anyway so perhaps that's not an issue. I've looked through /etc/modules.conf, and there's a bewildering list of modules and aliases that are connected with sound. If anyone could give me a pointer to what settings I should have I'd be grateful! Cheers, -nick
