Has anyone been using the ReiserFS. It works grate for me. When I was tuning my kernel to my hardware, I had a few kernel panics and had to reboot. I didn't have to wait for file system repair and I didn't loose anything. The other benefits of ReiserFS is with small files. When it comes to working with a lot of small files, (scrips and web based file, etc) it is much faster than ext2 file system. What is this?

Hi All, Just upgraded to the 2.4.13-3 Mantel kernel today and all went well, I am the coolist newbie on the block running the latest Mantel kernel in my SuSE! :-) But I am gettiing on bootup a modprobe error. It can't locate char-major-226 module? What is that all about? Here is the exact error, although it doesn't seem to be effecting anything and the kernel is working good. Repost -Konqueror & audio, video

Suse 7.1 kernel 2.4.4 kde 2.1.2 Konqueror defaults to kde media player for some audio and mpeg sources on the net. The media player does not work on my system. My attempts to change to xmms or realplayer fail everytime. I have been using ->Configure Konqueror -> File Associations. Is this a permissions problem ? Can anyone suggest a fix ? Thanks Brian Marr

Is the 3Com Professional Message Modem more usable in 7.3 than 7.2?

I was wondering what people's experiences were using their 3Com/US Robotics 56K Professional Message Modem in SuSE 7.3. In 7.2, with a success rate at around one-in-five, kppp can secure a useful connection as opposed to a time-out, whereas wvdial unfailingly produces unusable (i.e. dead) connections and "linux pppd [xxxx] Couldn't release PPP unit: Inappropriate ioctl for device" items in xconsole. pcmcia broken after k_deflt-2.4.13-3 upgrade

Unfortunately the kernel upgrade breaks my pcmcia controller (see boot error message below). I've tried recompiling the pcmcia modules from suse source (version 3.1.25), and compiling version 3.1.29. Can someone advise me? Hi Dominic, Are you using the stock SuSE 7.2 kernel or one you have built? I had the same problem, caused by omitting a module when I rebuilt the kernel. Shutdown problems with 7.2

Hello, I am running SuSE 7.2 on an iwill kk266 board (with an Athlon 1.333) -- the sytem runs quite nicely but I have one odd problem: when I power the sytem down it does not turn the power off -- the system runs through all the shutdown scripts and halts, but will not power off. Is this related to a setting within SuSE or is this perhaps related to a BIOS setting? On a related note, one of my other systems was running win98 -- when I shutdown it would power off automatically. I upgraded the system to win2k and now it does not automatically power off either. SuSE 7.2 and Magneto-Optical devices

Hi, I have a strange problem with SuSE 7.2 and a Fujitsu Magneto-Optical device, I've been using it for a long time with diferents versions of SuSE without any problem (SuSE 5.3, 6.2, 6.3, 6.4) and with Red Hat also. I've notice that when I mount a device and I try to write on it, the system crashes and it gets freezed so I need to reboot it fisically (ie no ctrl-alt-supr). I've had some minor problems reading from it... The fujitsu Magneto-Optical is a SCSI 640Mb, and I'm using an Adaptec UW-2940 SCSI card. I've tried on another machine with the same hardware and I obtain the same result (It crashes), and with other operating system's it work fine. What do you think? Is a problem of the kernel 2.4.4 by default on SuSE 7.2? Thanks in advance, Manuel Martínez Valls

Gnome X-terminal

Hi, not very long ago someone on this list complained about his/her KDE X-terminal showing t h i s s y m p t o m . Well, I've got the same with my Gnome X-terminal (SuSE 7.1). Any idea how it could be cured? TIA, SH

Mozilla/Netscape appears to take swap on start no matter what the free RAM is...with the new kernels.

Could someone try this and confirm what I'm seeing... Make sure none of your swap is being used..start everything you normally would and watch if swap is taken up. Then start Netscape 6 or Mozilla 0.9.X and see if off the bat at least 4M of swap is taken up. I thought this was a problem with the 2.4.10 .12 and .13 kernels not handling memory allocation correctly, but it appears that Mozilla based browsers are having issues with these newer kernels. If so..then it should be reported as a bug. Mozilla/Netscape shouldn't go for swap as soon as they are started and ignore the available RAM.
