Thanks to those (Ben, Jonathan, Zentara) who answered my previous query, re: not being able to boot after installing k_deflt.rpm. Booting installed system via rescue disk, issuing 'depmod -a' and 'lilo', did the trick. However, OSS would no longer work, nor would its sndshield module recompile. So I downloaded the kernel sources for 2.2.16. Then I realized that I'd best rebuild the kernel. Which I did, and everything is working fine, in fact it seems to work better than before. There *was* one big problem -- all root logins were disabled when I rebooted. What could have been the cause of that? Anyhow, I've fixed it. The only problem now is that OSS still doesn't recompile sndshield. I have wiped all trace of OSS from my system, removed the sound modules from /usr.src.linux, downloaded a new OSS, and still I get the same problem. The OSS documentation is rather petulant - "DON'T change the .config file in /usr/src/linux! (except when we tell you to)" -- what's the point of building your own kernel, then? -- and their online support merely repeats what is already unclear in their documentation. Does anyone have any suggestions? Or should I try ALSA? I know that OSS is SuSE's suggested solution, but I was never very happy with the crackling and various other problems, which OSS documentation always manages to blame on someone else's bad programming. What is people's experience with ALSA? Now, there is one thing I did not do, that OSS suggested I do: that is, set CONFIG_MODVERSIONS=y The reason is that this is warned against in several places, I didn't have it enabled in 2.2.14, and I was also using the downloaded OSS drivers with that kernel, not the ones that SuSE provides (only because I didn't know they were there), yet OSS worked fine then and I saw no reason why a clean install of OSS wouldn't work fine now. The other reason is that I resent the bossy tone of their documentation. One last question. At boot time I get the message, devpts on /dev/pts type devpts (rw) failed Now, the SuSE database says this is nothing to worry about if you're not using USB devices, so I am not worried. I'm just curious why this message never appeared with my 2.2.14 kernel as it shipped with 6.4. Thanks again. [SLE] Gnome menu missing on KDE in SuSE 6.4 & help....

Hi All, I've completed the *.rpm upgrade thing, but none of the Helix Gnome apps appear on the menu :-( I've tried to log onto the mail list archive, but it seems to be down & out, from this side of the planet at this point in time.... [SLE] SuSE 6.4 with 4 ISDN channels

Dear all, I already posted this subject on the SuSE-ISDN german list but still got no response, therefore I wanted to try my luck here... I have two Eicon Diva 2.0 PCI and want to activate the 4 ISDN channels. For only 2 channels it's not a problem but when I want to use the other 2, http://sdb.suse.de/sdb/en/html/i4lmppp.html does not help me too much :-( Because of the systems recognizes the second ISDN-card as ippp1, I think I should add: I4L_SLAVE_1="ippp2" I4L_SLAVE_2="ippp3" to /etc/rc.config.d/i4l.rc.config and then change /etc/ppp/options.ppp0 with: /dev/ippp0 /dev/ippp2 +mp and /etc/ppp/options.ppp1 with: /dev/ippp1 /dev/ippp3 +mp When the 4 channels are up (or seem to be up) all the routes to our ISP are lost... Could anybody please exactly tell me what to do in order to have all 4 ISDN-channels working? THANK YOU VERY MUCH IN ADVANCE! [SLE] 6.4 and ALSA with SMP -- A solution??

want/need to get sound working on my dual processor Suse 6.4 box. The support page has an update to the stock sound driver, but then states: "Please note, that the modules of this update will not work with SMP machines." But then offers no alternative. I did try to install it anyway, maybe they were lying ;) Nope, they were telling the truth alright, doesn't work on my SMP machine. Does anybody have an alternate solution?????? OSS perhaps? Thanks!! [SLE] Still Notebook Shopping

Everyone who gave suggestions with the Dell Inspiron 3800 - thank-you! Now, I have another notebook I'm looking at, the Toshiba Satellite 550 MHz Celeron Notebook with 64 megs of ram, Dual Scan 12" LCD, 6 gig hard drive, etc. that is mentioned in the CompUSA ad for today (if you happened to read the ad today). Anyone have any experience with it and Linux? It looks quite nice, and it's price tag at Best Buy is merely $998. [SLE] mutt with pgp -- no luck!

Hi, I'm trying to get pgp and mutt to play nice together without success. Symptoms: 1. When I try to send a pgp-encrypted message I am prompted as follows: Enter keyID for paulsen(a)texas.net: No matter what I enter, it just repeats the prompt. I did try the keyID shown by "pgp -kv". 2. [SLE] Online Help - Apache Doc Server Permissions???

I have apache running on a 6.3 version SuSE server. I have been trying to get a local document server working. So far I have successfully got all online help runnning with the exception of local Full Text Retreival searching. When I select Full Text Retreival netscape tries to open htdig/search.html. I then get a messages that I don't have permission to access that page. I checked in /usr/local/httpd/htdocs and there is a link from htdocs/htdig to /opt/www/htdocs/htdig/search.html. How do I set the permissions for access to this file??? [SLE] mpeg decoder

I'm looking for a good mpeg decoder which supports audio stream. I tried mpeg_play and xanim, but they only display de pictures and don't play the audio. Hi everyone, Some ftp locations do a reverse dnslookup before they let connection. While on dialup this always fails with me. I need some guidance in being able to provide the reverse DNS lookup.
