[SLE] Help getting printer up and running

Hello I just picked up an Epson Stylus Color 740 to replace my ancient Canon BJ-200. Got everything installed and running OK in win98, but it doesn't seem to want to recognize anthing in Linux. I downloaded a Ghostscript configuration file (stc740p.upp) and installed it using the apsfilter SETUP program. (It came with redhat printer db files, but they aren't of any use to me.) I then hand edited the printcap file to assign lp, lp-mono, etc. I printed a simple text file and --- nothing. The job showed in the queue for a few seconds and then disappeared. Never saw any reaction that indicated the printer ever got any data. The printer is connected through the parallel port /dev/lp0 The bootup message shows that lp0 is using parport, and seems to detect the printer on the parallel port - at least it prints a message properly identifying the printer. To see if the port was blocked, I tried catting a small test file directly to /dev/lp0 and ....nothing. I reconnected the old Canon printer and tried again. The file went through OK, so the port is up and alive. Anybody have any ideas? Haven't heard from the list all day..........server probs? I installed the new hard drive last night - seemed to go smoothly until I tried to reboot. Win98 hung at the logo screen & would only boot into safe mode. If I disconnected the drive, it booted fine. Linux booted just fine with the drive connected.....:) (not real surprising). Maxtor has not been much help...but at least it was a toll-free number. Anyone ever run across this before? I've installed lots of drives on various machines and have not seen this happen before. Any idea would be greatly appreciated? [SLE] LAN access

I have successfully set up SUSE Linux 6.4 on a Win98 dual boot PC. This PC is on a small home based LAN, with the other 2 PCs being Win98. A printer I have (Epson Stylus Colour 400) is on one of the Win98 PCs On the Linux PC I can see my Win98 partition without any problems but I would like to be able to see my Win98 partitions on the other PCs from the Linux PC, as well as being able to print from the Linux PC to the Epson printer on one of the Win98 machines. I believe I have to use SAMBA to do this, but the configuration seems rather technical to me. Can anyone point me in the direction of a step by step guide to configure SAMBA on my Linux PC to be able to access the 2 other Win98 PCs. Read/write access would be required in both directions if that was possible. I've just been onto ftp.gnome.org to pull the GNOME-1.2 binaries. There was a suse directory, the contents of which I collected. (Jeez, that's a fat pipe they have to that site - I was getting 100K/s!) Has anyone else collected this code? There weren't any instructions, and last time I looked there seem to be a conspiracy to make me install it over the web. What I want to do it take this lot home, transfer it to my machine there, then do an install. I'm assuming I can just unpack all the RPMs and watch it go. [SLE] Windows Emulators

I am doing a talk next month to some IT professionals where I will be discussing running Windows applications under Linux. For the most part I will be discussing 3 approaches, WINE, Win4Lin, and VMWare. Each of these have different approaches. I will be demonstrating the Win4Lin appraoch which seems to be the best compromise. My intent is more to evangelize Linux (and other flavors of Unix). Most likely I will use SuSE 6.4 on a Compaq 1900 XL161. I would like to get some feedback from people who have experience with this, especially those with WINE experience. [SLE] Midnight Commander and 6.4 evaluation version

mc from SuSE 6.4 evaluation version does not work here : segmentation fault. I tried recompiling it from the sources in 6.3 (mc-4.5.40) and 6.1 (mc-4.5.30) with glib 1.2.6 : it compiles nicely but same result (segmentation fault) when executing. However, this applies only in console mode. Hi people I'm trying to install public_html on a user dir but I always get a 403 error. Permisions are ok (711 for dirs 644 for files under public_html). I uncomened 'mod_userdir' in httpd.conf and the UserDir section with no luck. Any help? Sean Akers@ROMAX 20/06/2000 09:59 I could never get the SuSe firewall stuff to work properly so I downloaded pmfirewall from http://www.pmfirewall.com/PMFirewall/ It is very easy to set up and configure and it works great with SuSe 6.4. My Windows NT and Windows 98 client machines can all FTP, access news, play Internet games with no problems at all. It seems to be very secure as tests using the Shields-Up web site have proved (https://grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2) It handles dynamic IP addresses as well, reconfiguring itself automatically when you IP address changes when using the SuSe dhclient. I highly recommend it. Other quick and dirty solutions if your Windows client machines have SOCKS compatible FTP software is to install socks5 and use that or try delegated. Hope this helps.
