First, we have to guess the size of one disk block, that is, what is the size unit in the stat information. The information is not always available, nor dependable, for some Unixes, and we have to swim our way around that. Second, some systems count indirect blocks (simple, double, triple) in the stat information, while other systems do not, so we have to to be aware of those differences in the computations, if we do not want to misjudge the sparsity of a given file. Even within Linux, there are differences between Minix and ext2fs. I carefully saved some comments, somewhere within the `tar' sources, to help remembering what has been discovered so far. > And where's a good place to read about sparse files? I do not know. I guess that the source code for ext2fs gives a good idea for the Linux implementation, and may give useful hints for other systems as well, yet there are differences between systems. Hello, I was wondering if anyone could give me a little help. I've run into a problem, and can't seem to figure out exactly, what I need to do. Here's my setup: Adaptec 7880(same as 2940UW if I remember correctly) SCSI ID#0 - 9.1gig IBM w/ 1 partition of win98 fat32. SCSI ID#2 - 4.5gig Seagate w/ Partition 1: /boot 100MB Partition 2: / 3700MB Partition 3: /home 500MB Partition 4: Swap 128MB SCSI ID#5 - Plextor 40X SCSI ID#6 - Panasonic CDR 4x8 -------------------------------------------------------------------- IDE Channel 1 Master - 11.5gig Maxtor Channel 1 Slave - 11.5gig Maxtor Channel 2 Master - Creative DVD 5x Channel 2 Slave - 12.7gig Quantum Bigfoot Basically my ibm is used for 98, my seagate is used for linux. My other harddrives are only used for holding information. What I'd like? I'd like to use lilo to be able to boot win98 and linux. I'm lost when I have to think of where to put it. I'd like it to be on a harddrive so I can choose at boottime. I'd rather not use a floppy for linux. I'd really like to see a config for this. [SLE] Initialization for .xinitrc

When a new user is created, an .xinitrc file is (I believe) installed in the user's home directory. Where is the file that's copied to provide the local .xinitrc file? And as a user, is it better to modify the .xinitrc file in your home directory or to use some other file (.xinitrc.local, mebbe?) to implement your local changes? [SLE] Setting up FTPd on a local network

I have my Linux PC runnig 6.3 and connected to another machine at address 192.168.0.2. I want to make the Linux PC 192.168.0.1 an FTP host for local file transfer. Both machines have an ethernet card, the one in the Linux machine is a Trust PCI Ethernet COOMBI, the manual says its NE2000 compatable. I have got as far as specifying the card through Yast, but the console log still complains about failing to find char-major-15 when I connect from the other machine. I can connect localy on the Linux machine with the line 'ftp 192.168.0.1'. Can anyone help, tell me what I am doing wrong or missed out? I had a similar setup working when Windoze 95 was running on the Linux PC. [SLE] Kernel compile & gcc version to use?

As far as I can tell, we are still advised to use gcc 2.7.2.3 to compile the kernel. Out of the box Suse kernels also seem to be compiled with this. But, in 6.2, egcs 2.91.66 is the default. So, if I just do a make in /usr/src/linux 2.91.66 is used. According to gcc docs giving the -V2.7.2.3 option should be enough. My question is if I put -V2.7.2.3 at the end of the CC definition line in the main Makefile in kernel, would that be enough or do I need to do anything else? [SLE] using dump and storing on CD's

I'd like to do a level 0 backup of my system using dump, but I don't have tapes and was thinking in storing the backup in CD's. A full backup will not fit in a single CD, but I have a second HD where I can temporarily store the output from dump, so I thought of doing the following: dump -0u -B 600000 -f /the-second-hard-drive/file-name /dev/the-system this will start dump and stop once the 600000 limit is reached, asking whether the second volume is ready; at this time, I change the name of the just generated volume (say, make it file-name-a), and say yes. I continue this way. Once done, I copy each of the "file-name-a", "file-name-b", etc, to a separate CD. I know I can execute the dump command, and do the name changing thing. But I wonder if I will be able to restore the files. Is there a better way to do this? (I've been looking at tar, cpio, zip, but I think dump might be the way to go). You got it, Jon. The reason egcs should not be used for 2.0.x kernels is actually not that there are bugs in egcs, but that the 2.0.x kernels depend on some undocumented features of gcc. So the fault is with the kernel, not the compiler.
