Wireless PCMCIA in a Desktop: Will Linux Recognize it?

I would be thankful for answers to some questions: about wireless cards 1) Re: Wireless Ethernet Cards for Desktops. How does one get Linux to recognize an ethernet card (e.g. a wireless card) that is not on the list of supported cards shown by YAST2? 2) Re: Installing a PCMCIA card onto a Desktop. I understand that one can install a wireless PCMCIA ethernet card in a desktop with the appropriate PCI card. Is there any problem with Linux's recognizing the card under these circumstances? Under Linux 8.0, is there any problem with recognition and use of a wireless PCMCIA? I read the relevant HowTo, but that installed under Debian and I think (guess) an older kernel. (Newbie alert) Zip drive confusion.

Hi all, I have just tried to access my USB 250 Zip drive in SUSE 7.3 Pro, only to receive the following message: "Could not mount device. The reported error was mount /dev/sda4: unknown device." I have checked and ziptool is installed, I have a Zip icon on my desktop, but obviously, something needs to be configured somewhere. I read /usr/share/doc/packages/ziptool/README, but there wasn't any help as far as I could decipher. Any ideas? Cheers, Brian

Hi, Last night i posted message asking on help to aviod my system shutdown by it self. Well put statement suggested in lilo.con in the appriate localtion suggested but jut know the system in question just power off again for no good reason. I am running SuSe 7.1 Kernel 2.4.13 Mantel RPM. 512 MB RAM 10 GB (ReiserFS / ext2 /boot) Matorx Millimum 2 MB (It's work machine ) D-Link 538 TX+ 10/100 MB What noticed this occurs when memory drop below 350 MB the system shutdown when i am going in to X/Gnome. What i find strange is i am running RH 7.1 + Kernel 2.4.13 Kernel.org with exact same MB/RAM/HD/NIC etc.. and all it well with it. I have had this problems since kernel 2.4.0 . I have checked RAM with memtest and it check out i have switched ram from RH 7.1 Box with this one done memory test as well it check out but still occurs. I have always love SuSe but seriously thinking of calling it quit's with this distro. I never any problems with other distro/kernels acting like this. Any ideas :) Alex :)

[SLE] Hard Drive follies

I upgraded my system and along with the new board, processor, memory, and all that I bought a 30 gig hard drive. I could not get fdisk to see more than 7.9 gigs of it, even though I did all the standard things like flash the bios, use the installation diskette from the manufacturer, etc. The only way I was able to partition the drive was to use the Windows 95 fdisk, with all its limitations including the one from marketing which limits to one primary partition per drive. Eventually I partitioned a 15 gig primary and a 15 gig extended, then changed the type, formatted and gave mount points in YaST. Now there is a 15 gig primary, a Windows extended, with a Linux logical as the only partition there. Cripes. [SLE] sound problems

allo I have been having very annoying problems trying to play audio CDs. I am using SuSE 6.2 and have compiled OSS and SB16 drivers into my kernel (2.2.14pre15) I can play mp3's fine but not CDs I have tried using a mixer to mute and then un-mute the CD player - to no effect I have used different CD playing software, cdp and workman. Neither worked. The CD is read and actually played by both aps but no sound comes out of the speakers. I used to be able to play CDs back in the days of Win32 (ugh) - so I knwo that it is possible. [SLE] sound problems - in addition

I just plugged some headphones into the cdrom and I can certainly hear the funky tunes pouring out of the cd player but nothing gets to the speakers... the little grey cable that connects the audio out to the soudn card is well and truly ther and it works fine under Win32 as I said... hope this helps to solve the prob.. -A Abhinav Keswani wrote: > > allo > > I have been having very annoying problems trying to play audio CDs. Clock skewed

Hi all When I try to recompile the kernel I get a message saying the clock is skewed and the build may not work. What does this mean and how can I fix it ? I am running SuSe 6.1 with kernel 2.2.5. Thanks Mike

[SuSE Linux] Call-back with SuSE 6.1

Hi, everybody I'm new to Linux. Installed SuSE a couple of weeks ago and now trying to get some functionality. I have trouble setting up call-back (SuSe 6.1<---> ISP's NT Server 4.0) with optional number (fixed as well). Tried to use wvdial, but with no success (it dials OK, but then seems like doesn't know what to do next). Can it do the trick? I feel that maybe some scripting could help me. Could anybody provide me with necessary directions (or direct to the information) for making a flexible script and what software I need installed or some other approach? (I've read PPP-HOWTO but don't know if the information it contains applicable to current SuSE version; it doesn't say anything about wvdial). One more thing. Is it necessary to set the proper values in "resolv.conf" and host.conf? Some other files? I actually tried to find the answer and found a sample ppp.conf with brief instructions on settings (from Free-BSD as I remember), but can I use it with SuSE 6.1 and how? Are there any rpms for qt 1.40 for Suse 5.2 yet? I've tried to compile the source and get errors after about 10 minutes into make. Someone better step up and lay out standard libraries for diff. linux distro's or else linux is bound to fail. ( as a newbie to linux<about two monthes> i'm already disgusted with every program asking for a trip to the ftp world for another lib file.) I'd like to see distributions let you upload your source and config file.......compile your binary and send it back to you. Maybe i'm just wishing for to much from linux...but joe smo will NEVER download a new lib everytime he wants to try out a new program. YaST presented me a list of drivers. With this in mind, are you able to get your system booted up and get YaST running? 2) If YaST is indeed running, does it ask you what type of CDROM you have? The proprietary Creative Lab CDROM drive is a Matsushita/Panasonic CDROM drive and there is a driver specifically for it. It looks like SuSE supports it as I see a reference to this CDROM drive on the bottom of page 194 in the SuSE 5.2 manual. That section of the manual deals with all of the configuration settings for a Linux kernel. Obviously that section isn't any help until you have a working Linux system installed and you want to configure and compile your own kernel. This leads me to believe that SuSE must support this CDROM and it's just a matter of getting YaST to load the appropriate CDROM driver I think. 3) I went back to the original set of kernel driver modules from my original SuSE 5.2 install. This has a kernel version of 2.0.33 and it does include the Sound Blaster CDROM driver. The name of the driver module is "sbpcd.o" 4) I did run YaST and I went into the menu option where I selected a CDROM drive. I looked at the list of CDROMs that are available and the "Sound Blaster Pro", "sbpcd", is listed in the list of CDROM drives. I believe that's the driver you want. [SuSE Linux] Busy modem

I hope this isn't a repeat message. I mistakenly sent to this list from the wrong account earlier. I apologize if you've already seen this. I have just installed 5.3 and just can't get connected to the web. I installed PPP and SLIP support in the kernel, compiled it correctly and set it in place. It boots nominally showing successful implementation of both SLIP and PPP. I used YaST to set up the PPP operation, putting in all the details about my ISP as best I know how. What happens when I try to use Kppp to check my modem is a message that it is busy. If I try to use the generic email client on the taskbar, it locks up and I have to restart the KDE session. The manual is really very good about PPP setup and I have followed it as closely as I can. Can anyone suggest an error I may have committed? Thanks. An elaboration on the subject line: I have a Intel Netport print server with a HP 6MP (PS) printer. I have SuSE 5.1. After reading thru the man page for a2ps and the docs on apsfilter as well using apsfilter with network printers on SuSE SDB, I have a working setup with a couple of minor settings that I have not been able to figure out as follows: 1. "a2ps -l -2 -nH <filename>" produces no output on stdout. Per the a2ps man page, a2ps is supposed to output to stdout w/o the -P <dest printer> OR pipe to lpr tool. Instead, I notice a job is queued to the "network" printer and it prints there shortly. Can't figure out why a print job gets spooled when I don't give any printer destination OR pipe it to lpr. In fact the following command line from the a2ps man page "a2ps -l -2 -nH infile > outfile" creates a 0 length outfile with a job getting spooled to the network printer!! Seems like a bug. 2. The printout (2 pages in 1 landscape orientation) cuts out the right border of the second page i.e. right edge of the landscape page. Looking at the output it appears the dimension of the print area would fit perfect on a A4 size paper BUT in Yast I set up my system with "letter" (8.5"x11") size!! I would like to exchange settings with those who have a satisfactory 2on1 (land) output on letter size paper. I am in the midst of upgrading several key components of my system, and in the process I've been helping a less cutting edge friend upgrade his pc with my leftovers. I don't ever plan on using a modem again, but I wouldn't mind having one in a drawer somewhere just in case the need arose. This friend has a pci 28.8 modem, and I was wondering if these devices worked fine in linux. I never had much luck getting my old pnp isa modem working even with isapnp, so I had bought an external 56k and never had a problem with it. My old 56k external is going to my friend, and I was thinking about shaving the price I'm giving him in exchange for his old pci modem, but I wanted to make sure it would get detected by linux first. I have a mobo with a PP200MMX. I believe it is an ASUS. The only number I can find on it is GA-586HX R. Yesterday I had my system lock up really hard. I'm pretty sure I was in Netscape 4.06 when this happened. When I cold booted I could no longer see the harddrive that has the Linux root on it. The error was someting about having an invalid partition table, attempt to read past end of device. I attempted to run the Linux setup but that didn't work correctly. Fortunately most of my valuable data is stored on a second HD. My current problem is this: I cannot get the S.u.S.E. setup to run. If I boot from CD it sends me into a YoMama command prompt when I select "Install System". I then run Yast from there and configure my HD. The next time I boot it says it can't execute any of the basic commands that would actually set up the vfstab. The partions are there. At least I can see them. If I attempt to boot from A: using either a S.u.S.E 5.2, or a 5.1 floppy I cannot execute even basic commands like ls. Now here's the real kicker, I can remove the hard drive that has the partition problem and I still get these problems with the S.u.S.E instalation. I have been running Linux on this system for six months. Did someting screw up my firmware? Has anybody seen this before? WHAT DO I DO????????? I can's say that these are related, but I revieved an email with a garbage header, and garbage text. I have no idea if this could be part of my problem.
