[S.u.S.E. Linux] sound

I have about 8 weeks of linux experience under my belt, and I'm about ready to tackle the job of activating sound under my SuSE 5.1 distribution. In general, how does one do this? A couple of applications (including Tkdesk) emit a message that "/dev/sound is not recognized". How do I activate it, or load the sound module? There _is_ such a file in the /dev directory. My sound card is a basic Acer AW32, with a Crystal sound chip (PnP), and it's listed among the supported cards in the OSS-Linux site (4Front). I understand that re-compiling the kernel is probably not necessary, and I'd like to postpone that adventure a bit if I can. Could someone give me some advice, or point me to some of the appropriate documents? All their earlier releases installed cleanly over XFree86 (well, aside from a problem with "compressed" vs "gzipped" fonts) but even the "minimal" 4.1 install stomped on a lot of XFree stuff it should have left alone (including the nice color xterms!). That was fixable by reinstalling XFree, but was still an irritation. Due to popular demand, we mount CD-ROMs with the "user" option, which allows a normal user to mount a CD. But this implies (for security reasons) "noexec", so you cannot execute binaries directly from the CD. Solution: Modify your /etc/fstab thus: /dev/hda /cdrom iso9660 ro,noauto,user,exec 0 0 and remount the CD or use the long form of the mount command. This means, do not mount the CD-ROM using the command mount /cdrom but use mount /dev/<device> -tiso9660 -oro /cdrom instead. > Does anyone use AccelX 4.0 with Suse 5.1? The last time I checked AccelX it was not possible to use a resolution of 1280x960 but I had to use 1280x1024 instead. This is incorrect, because the width:heigth ratio should be 4:3 (as it is in 800x600, 1024x768 and so on). Hi all- Been kinda busy lately with database chores but wanted to tell some of the people out there that may be looking for a nice menu bar that has great functionality not to forget tkdesk!! It provides a really nice and customizable menu bar, file manager, command line extensions, lotsa stuff. The fourth beta comes with SuSE and the fifth can be downloaded from redhat's ftp site and applied with no problems. I have tkdesk starting each time I begin an X Window session with a minimized file manager starting of my home directory. tkdesk remembers what components of its are running when you shut down. Also... If you are looking for an advanced emai client I would suggest checking out xfmail. I settled on this awhile ago but decided to play around with procmail stuff; xfmail includes rather nice rules based mail handling BTW. Hi, I am a little new to linux. I have installed redhat a few times without problems. Got through the install process without too much problems with suse and even have x windows working. I would like to use the copy of Accelerated X version 4.0 that I have though. I keep running into this problem though. I mount the cdrom and go to the correct directory , but when I try to type ./Install like I have done on previous installs I get the mesaage bash:permission denied. I tried to do the install on another computer with redhat running and everything worked fine. Does this make sense to anyone? Does anyone use AccelX 4.0 with Suse 5.1? There is a option setting in the XF86Config that will turn on the power saving features of you monitor. I believe it is. . . Option "power_saver" Under the Device section. If this does not work then maybe something in your monitor blew up. That is what happened to mine :( -- Andrew L.
