[opensuse] a boot problem question

This is something for the elder population of you and requires some historical knowledge. I have the following setup: a 939 Athlon AMD 64 board with one HDD IDE 250GB set to master one HDD SATA 300 GB Seagate one HDD SATA WD 250 The chip-set is actually a 939DualVsta from Asrock (verrrry old with mixed AGP/PCI-e chipset) On the HDD IDE I did install Tumbleweed. During this installation I left all other disks detached. Now that works well, boots well, no problem. On the second HDD (SATA) I did install the new (and btw beautiful!) beta. With the IDE attached. This installs well. When I did install it, it offered to install the boot manager to /sdb1 (that is SATA). I agreed and thought: afterwards it will boot by IDE in sda1 so I would join the second entry in grub of tumbleweed. When booting it boots well in tumbleweed. The I did os-prober. First surprise: does not see anything. No other OS. Now, I tried to tell him boot from sda1 and as second choice I did put "boot from custom" and there I did set sdb1. Now tumbleweed said there was a problem installing the boot loader. It now blocks after the titel grub, after boot. So I went to the bios and told the PC boot SATA sdb1 as first device. This works well, in fact I am writing from the beta. When I go to the console and do su-, then os-prober..........it sees nothing, no second OS! Now the question for amateurs of archeology. It is possible to do a dual boot with two OS in THIS config? OR is it intrinsically impossible to boot a machine in dual boot with IDE and SATA on the same machine. I do already not understand why the prober does not see the other OS?? Thank you for any tip on how I could achieve this (it is that I feel it to be a waste to through away a working IDE disk only because technology has changed. --- Alle Postfächer an einem Ort. [opensuse] Install SUSE on win 10 maching

I've tried everything I found on the web for installing linux on a window 10 machine, nothing works. Here are details. Machine DELL Inspirion 23 Mdel 5348. i5. Delivered with 8.1, upgraded to 10 Secure boot : Disabled Boot Sequence: USB device ... Advanced Boot Option: Enabled Lagacy Boot SUSE 13.2 live on usb flash drive First try after making the above settings. ERROR: Boot device not found. Press any key to restart Restarted with F12 depressed USB boot choice highlighted. Pressed enter. ERROR: Boot device failed. Press any key to restart. What more is there to try? [opensuse] automount - only some mountpoints, not all

Just before I go delve further into the automount options - does anyone happen to know if I can have autofs only mount certain mountpoints, and not others? For instance, given the directory: /var/lib/capitals/ I would like to have /var/lib/capitals/oslo auto-mounted but not /var/lib/capitals/copenhagen. The reason being - "/var/lib/capitals/copenhagen" is local, "/var/lib/capitals/oslo" is remote. A few days ago in another oS list I posted an article re AdBlock Plus claiming that its owner "....has been quietly approaching makers of iOS ad-blocking software, offering them monthly payouts to support the "whitelist" policy that allows the AdBlock Plus to make its money." http://www.smh.com.au/digital-life/digital-life-news/adblock-plus-accused-o… AdBlock Plus (for Firefox) had been 'replaced' by AdBlock Edge (a fork or AB+) some time ago which did not allow a whitelist of ads. I just had a look and found that AdBlock Edge has been discontinued but has been replaced (by the (?)author - I didn't check) by *uBlock* *Origin* which, of course, does not have a whitelist. FYI. [opensuse] 13.1 - Thunderbird 38.0.2 - Plain Text Shown in Bold Consolas type Fontface?

All, Opening tbird today I was bewildered why my display of plain-text messages was now *bold*. Additionally, while I set the plain-text font to Dejavu Mono, the font face looks like some MS Consolas?? Looking at the message headers, it seems when the header contains a Content-Type of utf-8, then I get that funky bold plain text font. Specifically, when I see this in the header: Content-Type: text/plain; charset=utf-8; format=flowed On the other hand, when Content-Type is just plain ascii, the message is displayed int the proper Dejavu Mono font. The headers contain: Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" The only related setting is: Options-> Display-> Formatting-> Advanced-> Character Encodings-> Outgoing Which for outgoing defaults to UTF-8. However, if I change the outgoing type to match the incoming type of *Western (ISO-8859-1)*, then messages I send (to myself as a test), look normal when viewing them. A day or two ago, I took the zypper lock off of thunderbird, and first updated to the version in the Mozilla:/legacy repo, then when running a normal update, allowed it to update to 38.02 in the update repo. Is anybody else seeing this? It is annoying as ..... Looking, I found complaints at mozilla about windows versions doing this, but this is the first time I've seen it happen on Linux. [opensuse] who uses my WLAN? wireshark question

Hello, As my internet sometimes is very slow I opened 192.168.1.1 (with that movistar/Spain specific page) that showed me that besides of my eth0-wired computer there are 4 other WLAN-IPs, although I, for the moment, do not have switched on any wireless device. I don't know if I'm wrong, but because of this I think somebody else is using my WLAN and I'd like to find out about it. After googling I installed wireshark (with Yast), but now I am stuck. The found web pages say I have to use "monitor mode", but the list of interfaces shows "n/a" for all the interfaces in the "monitor mode"-column. Is there a more or less simple way to find out if there are others using my WLAN - even for somebody who has not the slightest idea of how networks work? Thanks for hints! I thought I would give slack a try to see what all the buzz is about. They have .debs for Ubuntu. So I made an RPM with alien. As long as I keep track of the current permissions and set them back, there should be no problem, right? The other thing is, why are directories like /etc conflicting with both filesystem-12.3-9.1.1.i586 and mdadm-3.2.6-3.4.1.i586? I do not think either had a conflict when they were installed. Is it that they both agree with the permissions on /etc (and match the system's idea about this), and that slack may be up to something different? Maybe Ubuntu has different permissions for these directories? Needless to say, I have held off installing this alien RPM. (BTW, this is on a different system than the one I have recently posted RPM issues about. This system is a 12.3 system that is working fine. eSATA backplane ports have all but disappeared from available new motherboards. Do converters/adapters like these[1] provide hotplug capability with newer motherboard SATA ports?
