[opensuse] Intermittent problem with pulseaudio (OS 13.1/13.2)
Hi, I've always had a bad luck with pulseaudio (probably because my HW - onboard VIA VT1708S). So for many years I've been installing pulseaudio with each new release of OS and then removing it after it stopped working for me. But after skype switched to "pulse-only" mode it is not an option anymore. In the two latest releases of OS it behaves a bit better, but still from time to time I find that after turning on the machine pulseaudio loses the correct configuration. The only sink shown is dummy output. My current workaround is to disable pulseaudio in YaST HW-> Sound and then re-enable it again. In most cases after that the pulse re-gains correct configuration. (Sometimes I need to do it a couple of times, killing applications I've seen the advice on Arch WIKI to check with fuser -v /dev/snd/* who is using sound devices, but in the "bad" case it's only kmix (I'm using KDE3). In the good case there are both kmix and pulseaudio. It is quite annoying... Any advice on how to find out what's wrong here? -- Mark Goldstein -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Mark, I cannot help you with your exact question, but: I also need to use pulseaudio occasionally. (I find it kind of unattractive, documentation is terrible, proper configuration is difficult.) I also use KDE3. In KDE3 I have ALSA set as default audio device. When I need pulseaudio I start it in a konsole window (by running pulseaudio command) and turn it off when I don't use it. As for the configuration: pulseaudio stores its configurarion in ~/.pulse dir. If you delete this dir its recreated with default base settings. After proper configuration you can backup .pulse dir and when necessary it's easy to recover your settings by copying the backup to .pulse. Thanks Istvan, I'll see how I can do the same thing (running pulse only when needed). BTW, I've already noticed that I do not have ~/.pulse dir. Probably in case pulse is enabled by yast, it uses some system-wide settings? Though the pulseaudio runs with my user ID... -- Mark Goldstein -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
