Bad blocks on a ReiserFS volume. How to retrieve files?

I have a large hard-disk (120 GB) on which some blocks went bad. Now, it cannot be mounted. Attached is what debugreiserfs says. What can I do; I'm newbie to reiserfs architecture. I thought that ReiserFS keeps copies of the superblock or something, like ext2/3 does. reiserfsck says "error occured looks like hardware problem. bread cannot read block 13271040". That's the actual number it displays. PS I have asked the same question on the reiserfs-list, but it's extremely low traffic. Maybe someone here knows more. [opensuse] Project management software question for project managers

I am looking for project management software I can install on my Suse box. Alas, there are quite a number of prducts that claim to be suitable project management products, but I am hoping to obtain a little help separating the wheat from the chaffe. Basically, when I open the project management software, I want to be able to choose from among a number of projects that are under way, and then see the relation between a client's wish list and the functional requirements specs, and then how these specs relate to the UML diagrams that have been created, and from there, what tasks have been defined for each requirement and the identity of all persons involved, the developers and their managers, and the person who designed the code that supports the requirement. And with that, I want to be able to see the project's timeline, the related bugs, &c. I would even want to be able to open the source code files and examine the code that was actually written. Here is my wish list: 1) a web application that stores data in either PostgreSQL or MySQL. 2) easy integration with UML tool (or has it's own UML tool that supports round trip engineering) 3) resource management (e.g. computers, and development tools, that can be used, personelle assigned to each task) 4) documentation of relation between functional requirements specs to specific tasks and specific unit and integration tests. 5) time/effort tracking 6) bug tracking, including data relating the existance of the bug, and effort required to fix it, to the person who wrote the original code, the person who supervised him or her, and the person who designed the 'feature' in question, the time taken to complete the original task, and the technologies used (to imprrove accountability as well as to determine retraining and continuing education needs (people aren't disposable, so instead of taking a harsh aproach to problems identified, I prefer to use education as a corrective, but I can't design corrective instruction without knowing precisely what the need is). I also need to know if a developer has a higher than normal bug rate simply because he doesn't take enough time to ensure the job is done right, or because I haven't adequately trained him, or because of a poor choice of tools, or somethng else that may be my fault. 7) use of task effort tracking history to generate provisional effort/cost estimates from new project's functional requirements 8) easy integration with open source ERP products like OFBiz (which may make trakcing resources and manpower easier, as well as connect real production data to the enterprise's accounting systems) 9) easy integration with CMS products, like Wordpress (especally for production documentation, includng degin documentation and user guides and reference manuals) 10) easy integration with verion control systems such as subversion. If there is a decent product that supports all of this, great (and language used to implement it doesn't matter), but if I have to write code to add missing requirements, then I am limited to those implemented using Perl or Java (and running on Tomcat). I don't know PHP well enough, and I don't know Ruby at all; and I really don't want to think about implementing this sort of thing in C++ (though I could if absolutely necessary). If you have project management experience, and use tools that are available for Suse Linux, what software product(s) did you use, and with what result? While I await relies, I will continue to review web documentation for those products I have found so far, to see if any of them are a) suitable for use in production and b) to see to what extent they support the features I am after. I have seen a number of products so far in my search, that deserve to be nameless, because they provide no way to relate cost estimates to one's team's track record, or to the details of the design, and seem satisfied with production of a pretty gantt chart (which is why I have formed the view that there is a whole lots of chaffe in the set of applications that call themselves project menement software - I have yet to find anything that really has the potential of being labelled wheat). Sorry SuSE: 9.1 is Waste of time and money!

I am sorry to conclude that my upgrade from SuSE 9.0 Pro to 9.1 Pro has been waste of time and money for me, so far. The same I have to say about the free SuSE "Installation support". The reason is that my SuSE 9.1 installation only detects 1 of my 3 SCSCI devices (as I wrote in another subject on this forum: http://lists.suse.com/archive/suse-linux-e/2004-May/3254.html) Yamaha 4416S CDRW recorder detected HP DVD Writer 100i NOT detected Epson 1640SU scanner NOT detected It's rather stupid. I have installed 9.1 using the DVD disk just in the HP DVD drive, but after the installation of 9.1, the KDE/Konqueror /media/recorder cannot access it and YaST2 cannot install additional software from it. Only one "Cdrecorder" is found in My computer and that is the Yamaha 4416 drive, which the KDE/Konqueror file manager assign as /media/recorder11. I am sure 9.1 is the reason, as I hadn't this problems with 9.0. I have tried both an update and two several new installation of 9.1. Neither SJDS nor Windows on the same multiboot PC have problems to detect these devices. In my opinion SuSE should therefore debug 9.1 better and longer, and not leave the problems to the customers. I see SuSE notes on their web saying that they know SCSI scanners are not detected in 9.1. But regarding my HP DVD writer problem, the SuSE support (as usual) don't take the responsibility and argue that this problem (a combination of IDE disk and SCSI devices) isn't included in their free installation support! This sounds remarkable, and I have never had a modern PC of so simple model or configuration that it has fitted the limited rules for the free installation support. Terje J. Hanssen

[SLE] RealPlayer G2 on SuSe 6.2

Yesterday, I finally got sound going on my Linux setup. I downloaded RealPlayer G2 and it worked beautifully. Today, RealPlayer run but no sound coming out. All other sound functions still work. I can still play my CD, have system sound BUT no sound when I run RealPlayer. /var/log/message said kernel: Sound: DMA (output) timed out - IRQ/DRQ config error? but KDE sound still work. I have re-installed RealPlayer 3 times now, still no sound when I run the RealPlayer. Any help is appreciated. Mount Windows NT(NTFS) drive as drive Z: for all users

Adding fonts?

Hi all, Reading some mails on the GIMP mail list, I ran across the procedure to install some more fonts for not only Gimp, but the system and StarOffice to use also. Well, I installed the fonts, went to the shell and issued the command xset fp+ <font directory> and then the rehash command and all fonts are there! Ok, that went well, but each time I restart the system, I have to do it all over again? Mailing lists have been so low in volume I've wondered if it's the USA holiday, broken internet, a fluke, or something else. I'm a subscriber to over 70 mailing lists. Mondays are usually the busiest day of the week, typically well over 500 inbound. This one was no more than half normal for a Monday, across the board. My 68 month old Canon is now curbside in pieces in two garbage cans waiting for trash pickup, dead after not having used up one complete toner cartridge. I only bought it because right on the box it had "Linux" in its supported OS list. Little idea did I have what that really meant - never again Canon. Anyone own a laser Brother MF of any type, and know if it, or any Brothers, support the Epson 9-pin (FX, IIRC) printer language, as Brothers of yore (all?/mostly?) did. Something no HP ever did AFAIK, and AFAIK no Canon ever did, was support the printer language I learned when Lotus 1-2-3 was at v1.0. I still have spreadsheets with embedded printer codes. I would *like* to be able to print some of them on occasion without having to dig an Epson-supported parallel port dot matrix printer out of the cobwebs, rejuvenate its ribbon, boot DOS, and wait 10 minutes per page in order to get pseudo-satisfactory printer output of the plain text, plus Epson printer control codes (font selection, margin, page length, etc.), that they contain. Converting the spreadsheet themselves is not a practical option, because they are Quattro Pro for DOS native format, which AFAIk nothing imports, while exporting from QPD is limited to WK1 format, which loses far too much via the export process. What I have been doing is printing to a text file, loading it in web browser, and scaling until the overall width approximates sane, which typically wastes 5-15 sheets of paper figuring out each time, and rarely gets the margins or line spacing close to optimal. I'm considering renewing my notebook and look for Lenovo T550 with Intel HD5500 and Full HD 19200x1080 display. I do not know what wireless is inside (this information is mostly unavailable on web sites). I have Lenovo product number but it is not present in product lists I can see on Lenovo site (not much surprised); in case someone knows it, it is 20CK001WRT. Anyone has practical experience? Question is mostly about video, wireless and touchpad/track point compatibility . Support for internal card reader is of course a bonus. Using TB 31.6.0. When one responds to an e-mail message and sends it without at any time saving it to the DRAFT folder then, on the main page of TB, a little arrow appears at the beginning of the Subject header of the message being replied to; this indicates that one has replied to that message. However, if one first saves the response which one is writing to the DRAFT folder and then completes the message at a later time and sends it then no 'little arrow' appears at the beginning of the Subject header. This lack of the "little arrow" a new development or something which has "always been' and I have never noticed it? Hello, I never used RAID, or nearly (I used hardware raid on a big server, but it was completely software transparent). I just made an exact copy of the 1Tb of my main computer. In this disk I have a ~500 Gb partition for my day to day data. is is possible to make the two partitions (one per disk) member of a raid 1 (mirror) system without fuss? I mean that I want to be able to access any partition alone if one of the drive fails (without changing the failing disk) and to revert to standard system if necessary. Whilst I can find information about the 'phone, no one has any information as to whether it will work from an opensuse laptop. Any recommendations based on experience using this setup? [opensuse] vfat timestamp again

Hello: I took photos with a digital camera which saves the photos to a vfat formatted sdcard. The camera's clock is set correctly according to my local time. When I mount the vfat filesystem in openSUSE 13.2 using a card reader, the timestamps the photos are 2 hours ahead. (OpenSUSE 13.2 system time is set to UTC.) Eg. timestamp shows 18:20 instead of 16:20, the time when the photo was actually taken. I find this behavior - again - unacceptable, ridiculous, and annoying. Isn't there any option with which this stupid behavior could be changed so that the filesystem times would be interpreted as the user's local time? Is this so big expectation? I would like to archive the images, and therefore the timestamps applied at mounting will be preserved. I don't want to archive wrong timestamps, because it is important when the photos were taken. I know I can look at metainfo, but it is not real a solution. What I want is changing the timestamps applied when the filesystem is mounted. Third -- RAID1 is safer than RAID6 for the same # of total disks in all cases w/same # of even spindles (need an even number for RAID1, obviously). If you only have 3 disks total, you could probably do RAID6 and it would be safer, but 1 data + 2 parity...ouch. But the 1st minimum size demonstrates the problem (and it gets worse w/more disks). With min number of spindles that will work for both: 4, RAID6 would have 2 data disks and 2 parity. while raid10 would have 2 data disks and 2 mirrors. If your failure rate is 'x', then the no-fail rate is 1-x per disk. In the raid 6, if any of the other 3 disks fail (in addition to 1st failure), the raid is toast. With a RAID10, there is only 1 disk that can cause the whole array to fail (the mirror of the one that went bad). If you get a 2nd fail on another pair, you can still rebuild. With only 1 disk "exposed" on RAID10, the % chance of the whole RAID failing is the %chance of 1 disk failing. However, w/raid6, there are 3 disks that are critical to rebuild the bad one -- their "no fail case is (1 - x)**3. I.e. say it was a 1% fail, 99% nofail. In RAID10 chances of whole RAID being safe would be 99% (the no fail rate for the 1 partner of the one that failed). In RAID 6, though it's .99**3 -- or .970. In that best case RAID6 has 3x the 'total fail' chances as the RAID10's. If you have 8 total spindles (6 data/2parity for raid6 vs. 4data+4mirror for raid10), then 1 disk goes. For RAID10, the total fail case only happens if the failed-drive's pair go's so it's still 99% chance of not failing. Vs. RAID6, .99**7 == .932) -- or a almost a 7% chance of a total fail vs. RAID10's 1% chance. The next point up is moving from 512-byte sect disks to 4k... It takes less space for a more power ECC on 4k than the one on 512: (from a Hitachi brief:) .... [opensuse] network manager only connects after 2nd or 3rd attempt

Hello, on my laptop with OS 13.2, after booting the network manager shows that it is connected to my wifi, but there is no connection to the internet, i can't even get to the router (192.168...) Then I click on disconnect and then on connect again and it usually works. Sometimes I need a third or a fourth attempt. It looks to me that if "connecting" takes a longer time, then the connection does not work, although shown as connected, and when it goes fast, it works... It does not depend on the distance to the antenna. What could be the reason for this? [opensuse] grep needs to be updated to 2.21

I was using grep to scan names of files in RPM's. Some of the names are in latin1 instead of UTF-8, and the version of grep installed with 13.2 (2.20), gives messages like this: *** file = libvtkUtilitiesPythonInitializer-pv4.2.so.1 grep: invalid UTF-8 byte sequence in input ----- *** file = libvtkPVClientServerCoreCore-pv4.2.so.1 grep: invalid UTF-8 byte sequence in input ----- the 'file' part is my script -- name of the file I am looking for, but grep aborts because of the invalid UTF-8 bytes in the "rpm -ql" output of some package or another.
