[opensuse] problems in 13.2 sudo & gvim:

tried editing a file as root: sudo gvim /etc/fstab Error detected while processing /usr/share/vim/vim74/menu.vim: line 354: E327: Part of menu-item path is not sub-menu E233: cannot open displayE852: The child process failed to start the GUI Press ENTER or type command to continue Two separate problems -- the menu.vim file is bad. I think I submitted a but on that some time ago, as I seem to remember them asking me if I could test the newer version (couldn't at the time didn't have the new libc installed for the new vim). So it was there in the 13.1 version as well (as tried reinstalling it (the actual file named above is in the vim-data rpm). --- The 2nd problem, sudo seems to have changed some default to not allow a child process to spawn. This meant when I used "sudoedit" to try to edit the sudoer's file: sudoedit /etc/sudoers ^C^C^C^Y^Y^C^Y^C^Y^C It just hung -- couldn't even trace it to find out what it was doing until I sigSTOP'd/CONT'd it: sudo strace -f -p 31351 Process 31351 attached -- just sat there w/no output until I ^c then ^CProcess 31351 detached STOP/CONT gave something: --- SIGCONT {si_signo=SIGCONT, si_code=SI_USER, si_pid=34997, si_uid=0} --- write(5, "\22", 1) = -1 EBADF (Bad file descriptor) rt_sigreturn() = 140695816922856 ---- Good thing I don't need sudoedit to clean things up. Sigh. I already wrote a bug about the 1st item and it didn't get fixed. I don't really feel like writing another. (I find problems like this with some regularity (not that the bugs are usually in anything suse has done... though the thing about 'gvim' invoking some child process to start the GUI... now I don't know -- is that a SuSE-ism? [opensuse] Windows opening off-screen

Hi all, I recently upgraded my work Lenovo W530 laptop from oS 12.3 to 13.1, and it went great! The only problem is, whenever I load certain programs, they tend to open up off-screen. It seems like if a program does this, it always does it; other programs work fine. If a program does it, I can *usually* right-click on its taskbar entry, go to More Actions, then Move, and bring it down. But this doesn't always work. I'm sure that this is probably a side-effect of my display configuration (http://susepaste.org/9f864968) but it's rather annoying nonetheless. Referencing the image I linked there, windows typically open with the top just out of reach on the left (DP-3) display. If I move that display "up" on the configuration, I can see more of the window, so it acts like they're aligning with the top of the DP-2 display, but rendering on the DP-3. This didn't happen on 12.3. (I don't want to move the display "up" on the configuration though, because then my screens don't line up with reality, and my mouse pointer gets lost when I migrate from one side of my desk to another.) All three displays are 1920x1080 pixels; my window manager is the stock KDE. I was curious if there's a way to prevent this? I'm not using any custom drivers, just whatever installed with oS, because it does all that I need. Thanks much! [opensuse] sort of cloning of hard drive

Hello, My main computer have now two drives: one SSD for system (openSUSE 13.2) and the original Hard drive 1Tb, for Windows 7 system and data. This computer is now 4 years old and I would like to have a replacement hard drive at hand in case the old one break. I already have the drive (same size). I have backup for all the data. I don't really mind to backup the linux systems I still have on this old disk (too old), so the main problem is backing up windows to get a bootable result. Of course I don't want to use any windows utility, not boot windows if not obliged to :-). I just keep windows because I need it sometime. the partition table is like this: /dev/sda1 2048 206847 204800 100M 7 HPFS/NTFS/exFAT /dev/sda2 206848 629360441 629153594 300G 7 HPFS/NTFS/exFAT /dev/sda3 * 629360640 1926973439 1297612800 618,8G f W95 Ext'd (LBA) /dev/sda4 1926973440 1953521663 26548224 12,7G 7 HPFS/NTFS/exFAT (only linux partition after that) The cloning tools (clonezilla, redo backup) needs booting a live cd, so making the computer unusable for the backup time, and redo is from 2012 (http://redobackup.org/) so I'm unsure if it works with windows 7. I guess I will have to use dd, but I know it for being dauntingly slow and wonder if there is not a best way. I found that sfdisk -d /dev/sdX | sfdisk /dev/sdY could copy the partition table to the new disk. Then I could use rsync? But will this copy the file system?? if not (I guess not), will mkfs.ntfs and mkfs.vfat make usable systems for partitions 1, 2 and 4? will the resulting disk be bootable on windows? I have also questions about booting windows and license updating, but it's probably not the good place. do you have any experience on this? [opensuse] Huawei E1552 GSM modem on OS13.2

Hi, I'm trying to use my usb-gsm-modem. lsusb : Bus 002 Device 003: ID 12d1:1446 Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. E1552/E1800/E173 (HSPA modem) On OS 13.1 I had to use usb_modeswitch. I could plug in the modem, and Networkmanager added it to the list of network-devices. On OS13.2, journalctl shows a storage device is added when I plug in the modem. I added a "mobile broadband" entry in the connection manager. usb_modeswitch seems not to work. This is the output : usb_modeswitch -v 12d1 -p 1446 -V 12d1 -P 1001 Look for target devices ... No devices in target mode or class found Look for default devices ... product ID matched Found devices in default mode (1) Access device 003 on bus 002 Current configuration number is 1 Use interface number 0 USB description data (for identification) ------------------------- Manufacturer: HUAWEI Technology Product: HUAWEI Mobile Serial No.: not provided ------------------------- Warning: no switching method given. See documentation -> Run lsusb to note any changes. Bye! I followed http://www.blah-blah.ch/it/how-to-s/install-a-huawei-e1762-on-gentoo/ but after configuring usb_modeswitch.conf and running usb_modeswitch -v 0x12d1 -p 0x1446 -H -s 5 -c /etc/usb_modeswitch.conf lsusb shows nothing different, although the output of usb_modeswitch indicates there is a change. Any help ? P.S. how can I "simulate" a "tail -f /var/log/messages" ? I know journalctl can display something like it, but I would like to see it in "real-time". [opensuse] Using Windows shares

Hi, Before last week I used samba3 as a file-server. I used smb4k to mount the shares and use them. Worked fine. Now I'm running a samba4-domain and I can't get smb4k to mount the shares. I can use Dolphin to get access, but applications like Thunderbird and LibreOffice can't see those "mounts". So what are you using to get access to Windows-shares ? I'm using a laptop, so the Windows-domain is not always there. I'm running OS 13.2, smb4k is the stock version (1.0.9). I just saw there is an unstable 1.2.0 version. Maybe I should try this ? Hi, Long ago, audit entries by apparmor of the form: type=AVC msg=audit(1432806701.990:1660096): apparmor="DENIED" operation="file_mmap" info="Failed name lookup - disconnected path" error=-13 profile="/usr/sbin/openvpn" name="run/nscd/dby6fOGd" pid=4296 comm="openvpn" requested_mask="r" denied_mask="r" fsuid=0 ouid=0 started appearing in /var/log/audit/audit.log. I've seen this also many times with var/run paths missing the root in the path. The main problem with it, apart from the fact that apparmor fails to enforce permissions, is that aa- logprof aborts when it encounters such lines. Is this known? [opensuse] reverting bcache

I have a laptop with a 25Gb included sssd. Until now I used it for bcache (and it's equivalent for windows). returning from osc-15, may be after an update, my 13.2 stopped working, with filesystem error, only booting on emmrgency mode, and I couldn't understand why (it's not a btrfs size this time). no matter. I don't have any really important data on this travel/demo machine, so I decided to reinstall a fresh 13.2. I decided also to install it directly on the sssd. I don't care of windows nor on the intel fast boot that anyway is not fast :-). no install problem. Yast installed as ext4 without question (and I better like it). But I would like to access my bcached data partition on the large disk. it's refused (unknown filesystem). I have nothing really meaningful on it and I can format it, but this machine is for learning and I would like to learn how to un-bcache his disk. Is it enough to change partition type? after all it's natively ext4? [opensuse] failed installation, system inaccessible

Attempted an upgrade from 12.3 to 13.2. As suggested in previous thread (on "upgrade"), I used gparted to shrink an NTFS partition and create a new ext4 boot partition. With the 13.2 DVD (which I had verified after burning), I imported the partition scheme, changed the boot partition to the newly created one, set that to format, and otherwise took the defaults. The installation proceeded through the "unpacking KDE images", then switched to a character screen. The last item on the screen is /etc/zypp/services.d / Then the red window comes up "An error occurred during the installation." If I again attempt the install the same thing happens. If I boot from the hard drive, it will load the 12.3 system, up to the login screen (which looks different from what was there before). I can enter name and passsowrd, but it says "login incorrect." Both for regular user and root. I had entered same username and password for the new 13.2 installation as for the 12.3. So it appeard to load, but I cannot log in. So (please help!), (a) how do I get access to my system again, and (b) how do I get 13.2 installed properly? I have limited(!) access to the system at this point, so if there is information needed from it, I'll need some detailed instructions as to how to get it.
