[opensuse] yast2 - colors inverted in some columns with dark theme

All, In yast on 13.1, the colors no longer consistently follow the color scheme set. I use a dark theme and in 11.4 the yast colors followed the color scheme without issue. In 13.1 it is hit-or-miss on a column-by-column basis. See: http://www.3111skyline.com/dl/bugs/openSuSE/131/yast2-colors.jpg What could cause the color scheme to be correct in some columns but not others? How to fix? I still have the 11.4 install on a separate disk, so if there is something I need to check and compare, I can. -- David C. [opensuse] ssh through a firewall

Hi all, The subject sounds innocent enough. I am trying to ssh from an openSUSE 10.0 system in to an openSUSE 11.2 system. There is a firewall at the 11.2 end. It is not the firewall on the 11.2 itself. That is fully disabled. It is some other device. I told them to open port 22 (tcp and udp). But I still cannot log in. I get the initial ssh questions about the host, and then the password prompt. However, my password is not accepted. If I ask them to open all ports at their end, I can log in just fine. I am, once again, confused. Any ideas? [opensuse] Recommended - small lightweight DMS - to be able to catalog/search files by tags, type, etc.

All, I'm looking for a small light document management system that will allow me to catalog 1000s of miscellaneous files into a searchable list. This is primarily for all the code and script snippets I've collected over the past 15 years but I would also like to include the myriad of little tricks/tips files I've saved and squirreled away. A smart directory layout and grep have always fit the bill, but I've got to the point where I know I have a snippet of X I've saved, but *where is it, and what was that function called?* (sound familiar?) NO - I don't want beagle (or anything like it). I don't want some full-text scan and index of all files. Those are miserable for code and I don't want some 200 Meg index laying around somewhere. I'm looking for something that will just hold the filename, a description, and then possibly a list of user-defined tags I could assign and filter by. For code doxygen is nice, but worthless for small tips/tricks, howto, or general readme type files. For general tips/tricks/readme/config type info, basket has been great. I've looked into many of the so-called DMS packages, e.g. opendocman, kimios, LetoDMS, logicaldoc, owndms, SeedDMS, xinco, etc., but most are like sledgehammers for swatting this fly. I don't mind if it is a database backend or flat-files, but I want something simple to add information to and simple to browse and update. Does anybody have any favorite way to solve this "I'm getting to old to remember where every file is" problem? It doesn't even have to be a DMS per-se, if somebody has a slick way to cut down the time spent playing the "where is that file" game -- that's what I'm looking for. What the ideal would be would be something that used a small database, like sqlite3 to hold the filenames, descriptions, keywords, and tags; quick logic to add all files in a dir matching some simple extension pattern; then most importantly a quick/efficient way to browse the list of files collected and assign descriptions and tags (something like mc - view/edit); along with a quick query interface to find the stuff when your done. It could even be a command line query. So on the wild chance somebody already has a favorite silver-bullet to solve this problem, I thought I'd ask. -- David C. Hello, with opensuse-13.1 the acroread PDF reader has been dropped. There was a really convenient function in the acroread print dialog: print the current view and fit it to the printable area, auto-rotating and centering it if needed. Does anybody know any program with a similar functionality? [opensuse] SSL handshaking with optional client verification

Although I have SSL seeming to work, I have encountered another problem. I have written a small Perl package that tries to ensure that communication between client and server is properly handled. I made client verification optional on gremlin.site, and, in my test script, I provide the filename and the directory in which the client certificate is located to LWP's user agent.. Now, the usual printenv.pl prints out the environment, including any certificates that are exchanged. But when I run my script, I see the content of the server side certificate but the field that is supposed to hold the client side certificate is empty. How do I determine whether the fault is with the server not asking for the client certificate or the client not sending it? I guess I could tell Firefox and/or Chrome to use my client certificate, and then use them to access the same page, but I don't know how to tell browsers about client certificates. [opensuse] 13.1 - NetworkManager - Can you prioritize connections?

All, Using traditional ifup for wireless, wpa_supplicant.conf allowed you to prioritize wireless connections by ordering the entries within the file. NetworkManager does not rely on entries in wpa_supplicant.conf for wireless credentials, and thus that manner of prioritizing has gone away. man NetworkManager mentions only execution priority for "scripts in the /etc/NetworkManager/dispatcher.d directory in alphabetical order in response to network events", but is otherwise silent on connection priority. Can you prioritize wifi connections in NetworkManager so that if 5 connections are available, you can specify the one that it tried/used first? If so, how? -- David C. This is killing me. After googling for days, and going down countless blind alleys, I am no closer to a solution. Much of the info I get is either ancient or for other platforms, or both. Worse, 99% of the pages I get blame the browser, but the browser is not relevant (except I get ssl_error_rx_record_too_long from Firefox and ERR_SSL_PROTOCOL_ERROR from Chrome: both on a workstations running OpenSuse 13.1). I know the browser is not to blame because the same browsers CAN connect to another of my servers (running Ubuntu 12.04) over https. I made sure that 443 is open in the firewall, and that the server is listening on 443, and that the virtual host using 443 is properly configured (or so I believe), with the proper filename and full path to the server's key and certificate, as well as to my rootCA certificate. The web server DOES start, and handles http requests perfectly. But every attempt to use SSL results in one of the above errors on the client side. On the server side, the only error I get relates to the web server not being able to find socache_shmcb_module; or so it says. In point of fact, the .so file is in /usr/lib64/apache2. I can not imagine why it would claim that it isn't installed (and that it would ignore that error), when in fact the file is there and the proper path to it has been provided in the LoadModule statement in the relevant conf file. As the only reference to variables related to this module occur in the virtual host that is supposed to be using SSL, I wonder if this error is causing the other two. I would include my *.conf files, but there are so many, and I am no longer sure of which files would be most useful, or which I should focus on (I have stared at all of them for so long, it is hard to read my screen), I'll post only those you ask for. I don't want to post anything that is not relevant. Please help. It is getting desperate here. I now have a headache that would kill an ox. It feels like my head is going to explode. Hi, this time appears from time to time... So... When I look at http://software.opensuse.org/package/libreoffice I'd expect to see LO 4.2 in LibreOffice:Stable as it is stable (well, 4.3 was released recently and https://www.libreoffice.org/download/libreoffice-fresh/ already offers it). What is the purpose of LibreOffice:4.2 repo? I'd expect to keep just LibreOffice:Factory for next openSUSE release, LibreOffice:Stable (with 4.2 and very soon with 4.3) for stable upstream and LibreOffice:Unstable for developmental upstream. But the last one contains only 4.1.1.2. It seems to me confusing and outdated. I'd rather use good oS repos as in case with KDE than RPMs downloaded from the web... Could anyone knowledgeable, please, explain and/or fix it? [opensuse] replacing qpopper with dovecot

I have just installed SuSE 13.1 and I wanted to install qpopper since that is what I was using to make local sendmail available to Thunderbird (pop3). I found that qpopper was missing from the repository and with a little google work, I found one post that asked about qpopper for 13.1. One person suggested using dovecot so I thought I would give it a try. Installing was easy and I thought running might be too. I started the service through yast, services manager. It seemed that dovecot didn't stay running so as suggested in dovecot manual, I looked at /var/log/mail. I saw that it failed on detection of the mail folder for my username. The manual had some info about that and suggested editing the dovecot.conf file. I did and now dovecot seems to be working and I can even connect from Thunderbird. It appears however that I might not understand very well how to get my goal for dovecot. I see that dovecot works and Thunderbird connects but I see that dovecot has created its own set of mail files and folders in the mail dir that seem to be parallel to the sendmail files but not connected with the sendmail files. Can anyone tell me how to get dovecot to do what I used to do with qpopper? I want dovecot to repackage sendmail messages for use by Thunderbird (or any other pop3 client). [opensuse] 13.1 - what is the interface you use for NetworkManager??

All, I have always used traditional ifup, but with 13.1 I went with NetworkManager. No complaints. But, how the heck to you talk to it?? I've read man NetworkManager and found my wifi connection in /etc/NetworkManager/dispatcher.d, but now I need to switch wifi access points (the WAN port on my original router died) How do I tell NetworkManager to do this? Complicating the issue - both access points are running. I am still connected to the old (which the wifi works on -- just not the WAN port). I've added a default static route in 13.1 pointing to the new wifi router to get internet back, but now I need to tell Network Manger to drop it's connection to essid 'skyline' and establish a new connection to essid 'skyline_633' and then use 'skyline_633' as the new default. Do I do this from the command line, or is there some gui widget I should install? -- David C. Can I ask the powers that be, why I am being somewhat forced to use an openSuSE supported MTA? I am running openSuSE 13.1 x64 and using YaST I cannot get it to NOT install an MTA. I am using the Apache James email server as my MTA and I want to use the mini-sendmail version of sendmail. So I go to YaST and tell it to uninstall Postfix. It happily does so, but then it installs Exim on me, and a different kernel. (this is done in order to satisfy dependency requirements) I DON'T want Exim so I tell YaST to uninstall Exim which it happily does, but then it installs MSMTP-MTA on me, and a different kernel. (this is done in order to satisfy dependency requirements) I DON'T want MSMTP-MTA so I tell YaST to uninstall MSMTP-MTA which it happily does, but then it installs BSD sendmail. (this is done in order to satisfy dependency requirements) I DON'T want BSD sendmail so I tell YaST to uninstall BSD sendmail which it happily does, but then it goes back and installs MSMTP-MTA on me. (this is done in order to satisfy dependency requirements) And now I am going in circles. I DON'T want one of these MTA's, why am I being forced into having to have one? They will conflict with using the Apache James email server and mini-sendmail which as I said, they are the ones I WANT to use! It also seems to me that if I don't want ANY MTA on my system I ought to have that option. I may not want it to ever send email to anyone! PERIOD! Is there a different route I should take to get these MTA's off my system and let whatever programs need one, to use the one I want to provide instead? I just saw Henne's post, as I wasn't part of this discussion, but wanted to comment on a few major sources of grief on this list. Most email readers these days have some way of threading. You can choose to ignore any responses coming from someone other than your "chosen" speaking partner. In the extreme cases, you can filter out someone by subject and source -- or just source. Is this extremely rude? I find this is not only quite rude but highly insulting. ---- Um...let's see... having conversation at group event where everyone hears everything you say, and you want to shut people out of your conversation and make it private. That someone doesn't buy into you "owning the space" at a group event, you consider "rude". It starts by someone taking it upon themselves to tell the other person that their behavior is unacceptable on this list. Anyone know the arrival estimate for Plasma 5 in the OpenSuse KDE repositories? (I'm picking your brains because I don't want to join another list, and wouldn't be sure which to join anyway). [opensuse] 13.1 - screen brightness stuck on high - unresponsive to fn keys - how to fix?

All, One new issue I have with 13.1 is my Toshiba laptop brightness is stuck on high (really high) and I cannot adjust it with the normal function keys. The normal method for increase/decrease is: fn + F6 - lower (8 steps) fn + F7 - raise (8 steps) What is strange is that this hardware brightness control has always worked, regardless of the OS (XP/DOS, openSuSE 11.0, 11.4, Archlinux) and regardless of the driver (radeon, radeonHD, etc..) Now it is just stuck. I can pop the 11.4 drive back in and it works fine. What could be causing this? Moreover, what could be the fix? -- David C. I am reading from the official openSuse 13.1 reference guide, and hit at least one error. You see, I had installed Apache2 when I first installed OpenSuse 13.1; letting yast do the default configuration and start Apache. All was fine, except I had no SSL. Today, I edited the relevant conf files to enable SSL, and I generated my own CA, and created a server CRT; and put all the rquired key and certificate files in the right places. Now I want to TEST the configuration files as they are now, and reading from the official guide (but my main source of info was http://doc.opensuse.org/products/draft/SLES/SLES-admin_sd_draft/cha.apache2…) I see that I can do that using" rcapache2 configtest Alas, that fails with the message that /etc/init.d/apache2 does not exist. I looked, and it is right. There is no apache2 file in /etc/init.d. I don't know if that is a defect in the documentation or a bug in rcapache2, and I do not care. All I want is to know how I can check the new configuration before risking stopping and trying to restart apache. How do I do this? One other question. I have recently become aware of nginx, and have been reading that it performs much better that apache on limited hardware under heavy load. Can anyone confirm this? Further, will if work with the same document root and cgi-bin directories that apache uses, or does it want it's own? I would like to download the latest nginx (version 1.6 I believe), and install it, but do I have to stop apache before I do so? Ideally, I'd like to be able to switch back and forth between apache2 and nginx, so I can run tests to compare and contrast the two on the same machine. But can I do so without creating major headaches for myself? One of the things I have to check is the behaviour of each in handling optional checking of client side certificates. What I have to investigate is how to have optional checking of client side certificates, for hundreds of pages (and restricting their content if a client side certificate is not present), and making checking of client side certificates mandatory in order for the user to have access to a very small number of pages. I found where/how to make client certificates optional (for Apache2), but not how to make it mandatory for a given page. And I have yet to begin to investigate this for nginx. Any tips would be appreciated. It occurs to me to ask if anyone knows if there is an opensource application server that has the same relation to Tomcat that nginx has to Apache's httpd server (i.e. mature code that performs better on limited hardware under heavy load)? (and no, I am not interested in something imcomplete or only in alpha testing or even beta testing - and I do not have a budget for products that are not open source). [opensuse] wsjt-x for SuSE 13.1

Since I have just installed 13.1 this morning, I got the hamradio repository added and have installed a few ham related programs already. One program that I have is wsjt. I was hoping to find a related program called wsjt-x but I don't find that one. Has anyone used wsjt-x with SuSE 13.1? Is there a SuSE package or will I have to build from source?
