[opensuse] what to backup, or where is stored data?

Hello, I'm on the way of building a new server. I have limited room in / and want to be able to backup relevant data easily. So I wonder where data is stored in a server (apache, postfix or exim, mailman, inn, dovecot, squirellmail...). I know most of the config data is in /etc. There is little problem to backup /etc because no file there should be let open (locked). I already moved /srv to /home. In fact, I create a /data folder in /home, with /srv folder in it and mount it bind on /srv with this fstab line: /home/data/srv /srv none bind this works very well. AFAIK, Inn or Mailman data are stored in fake users in /home but what about mariadb (mysql), log files, mail spool files? is it possible/sensible to make for /var what I did for /srv? [opensuse] rsyslog no longer logging to var log messages?

Hi everyone, For some reason, my oS 12.2 server is no longer logging to /var/log/messages. This started after I set up a separate logging location for rsnapshot. However, removing the things I added doesn't seem to make a difference, and the new logging location is working properly. In fact, from what I can see, all of the logging works properly except that nothing is going to /var/log/messages (it was last modified last December.) I've tried restarting the service, restarting the server, etc., to no avail. A copy of my conf file is here: http://paste.opensuse.org/ca33798e Any thoughts or stuff that I missed? The lines I added are 142 and 143, then added ";rsnapshot.none" to line 156. [opensuse] libdrm_nouveau2

I'm cleaning out some Nvidia stuff from my computer. The two remaining packages are libdrm_nouveau2 and libdrm_nouveau2-32bit. When I try to remove them, I get a warning that removing them will break dependencies for Mesa. I'm slowly getting used to managing photos with digikam, but one thing I have not worked out is - connect my camera start digikam, download a couple of pictures disconnect camera take another picture reconnect camera --> how do I get the list of photos refreshed now? [opensuse] KDE 4.13 Dolphin Bug

When placing a character at the beginning of a filename in a folder with other files, for example: "x", KDE moves it to wherever it should based on file alphabetization. When this happens, all the files listed before the new placeholder location are automatically highlighted. Can someone please confirm if this is happening on their system? [opensuse] GNOME problem solved

I have been tearing my (remaining) hair out over a GNOME problem, but it is finally resolved. I have two Sun Ultra-20s both running openSUSE 13.1 and both having nvidia graphics cards. On one of them, I was able to use either KDE or GNOME. On the other, KDE worked just fine, but trying to login under GNOME would give the error "Oh no! Something has gone wrong." [logout] I have been trying all kinds of things, including removing and reinstalling all of the pieces of GNOME that I could find. Nothing helped. I had searched all over the internet and found lots of other folks who had seen that screen, but nothing that was suggested helped. Until I read this http://forums.opensuse.org/showthread.php/464950-Gnome-3-fails-to-start?s=1… and saw a reference to GNOME needing mutter. I checked the machine on which GNOME worked, and it had mutter installed. The machine on which GNOME failed did not have mutter, so I tried installing it. GNOME now works!!! I would likely never have found that on my own. None of the error messages said anything at all about GNOME needing mutter, but apparently it does. [opensuse] Acroread plugin in opensuse 12.3

Hi A page I try to access demands acroread > 9.4. So I've installed 9.5. But I seem to be unable to tell firefox or chromium how to use acroread. Shouldn't there be a plugin for this ? (yes, I've installed acroread-browser-plugin) In firefox it's not listed in the add-on plugins section. [opensuse] Is it possible to limit the download speed fo Firefox?

On the occasions when I have to use Firefox to download something large, that can take an hour, I can not do anything with Internet on any other thing on the machine during that time. Even DNS fails to respond. I prefer to use something like wget and limit its bandwidth, but some downloads have to be done directly by Firefox (like a youtube video). So...
