Hi All, I just installed subject but find it will not boot unless the insstall dvd is in the drive and I point to HD install. The machine will not boot otherwise. [opensuse] OpenSuse 11.4 and bad Java installs

Hello, I've have wrecked my Java build on my 11.4 box and I am having a hell of time getting it to work properly. After installing and uninstalling each of the following; jre-6u35-linux-x64-rpm.bin, jre-7u7-linux-i586.rpm, jre-7u7-linux-x64.rpm, ...,I finally installed openjdk and its corresponding plugin to finally get some java capabilities in my browsers, Firefox, etc. However, I still get javascript errors on many webpages and I am almost at wits end. I would like to start from scratch by uninstalling all instances of Java and clean up /etc/alternatives, or whatever needs to be done to get a nice clean, properly linked java install with the browser plugins working properly. Could someone point me to a link or howto that can show me how to accomplish this? [opensuse] Removable Hard Drive not mounting

I am reasonably certain I used my USB hard drive at least once to back up after upgrading with "zypper dup" from 11.4 to 12.2. But starting yesterday, no notification when I plug it in. [opensuse] How does grub2-makeconfig determine what Linux kernels are recovery one's or not?

Hello, I am fiddling with openSUSE 12.2 GRUB2 attempting to boot a specific Kernel version. According to http://doc.opensuse.org/documentation/html/openSUSE/opensuse-reference/grub…, I ran 'grub2-makeconfig' to create the new boot entries, I am aware that latest Kernel will be placed on top of the list descending with the oldest Kernel, the specific Kernel I like to boot by default is set with recovery options. Is this by design? Furthermore, it states that I can specify the default boot entry with 'grub2-set-default' but this is useless if 'grub2-makeconfig' sets the Kernel I like to boot with recovery options. This (didn't show in my initial web search for usb bootable utilities) below looked simplest, so I ask Google for imagewriter, who gives me both the launchpad.net homepage and a suse installation page telling how to use it for suse. OK! I follow the instructions and reboot. Hooray! the beloved suse installation welcome splash. Ask for installation: get only a 5-field garbled screen, no more activity. Ask for verification: same. Ask for repair: same. Boot from disk: same text-mode as before. Thanks, Carl, but it didn't work for me. Now on to Felix's method as amplified by Per and Lars. His first method using zypper is next. [opensuse] No sound with Skype 4.0 on openSUSE 12.2

Since reinstalling Skype 4.0 on this oS 12.2 system running KDE 4.8.5 there has been no sound output for receiving calls or ringing. It all worked on the previous 12.1 system. On the previous system, Skype detected that pulseaudio was controlling the sound system, and offered a button to open the PA controller. This is missing now, and skype doesn't offer the default device known to YaST and KDE System Settings Phonon, unless it's what it calls default device, which doesn't work :~| All the other sounds work OK, e.g. system sounds, music output etc. I've googled and read through the mailing list archives, but can't find an answer. Most messages are about skype not installing properly on 64 bit systems (like this one), but that's not my problem. Any suggestions, please?
