[opensuse] 11.4 - xterm background went from dark to white after latest updates - how to fix?

Guys, My xterm background in kde3 has always been a pleasing dark color from my background color setting in either kde3 or gnome. For some reason, after updates this past week, my xterm background had changed to white? I didn't do anything to the box or reset anything, so where do I look to set the xterm color back to dark? [opensuse] Anyone using MapR?

A colleague just had someone install Ubuntu 10.04 on a set of machines, and then MapR (http://www.mapr.com) and I will need to help maintain these. Seems he was really after the MapR stuff more than Ubuntu. I would be happier if I could get him to use openSUSE as the base instead. So, is anyone using MapR on openSUSE? They only list Ubuntu, RedHat and CentOS. But that is seldom the full story... In case you haven't heard of codeacademy.com I want to just make a quick blurb. Basically it is a simple, hand on way to learn programming quickly and easilly. Check it out. To the coders, though I don't know if helping to create new courses would benefit our community directly I wanted to encourage anybody who is willing to contribute. Currently they don't have very much on the various languages. I'm doing the Javascript tract right now, but wish they had a C++ tract. This is the sort of resource I've been hoping for a long time for. If you are so inclined, please help make more courses since this is really a fantastic resource for people like me who have wanted to contribute to code but haven't the experience or knowledge. [opensuse] KDE crap

Hi all I don't know what I did, but this morning when I turned on my system all of my desktop icons were gone. Normally I have two columns on the left of icons. After messing with it for over an hour I have a few very small icons randomly all over my screen. Can someone tell me how to get it back to the way I had it AND turn off all this new crap? [opensuse] Amarok fails on KDE upgrade

I am using openSUSE 12.1, one on a desktop with an ASUS motherboard and another on a Lenovo 3000 V200 laptop. Since I have upgraded to KDE 8.2 on 2 computers is that neither of them will play music files with Amarok. My Amaraok app uses Xine as the phonon backend (not sure what phonon is, but that is what it says), and in the configuration graphic, I have it set up with internal audio as the sound card. However, it defaults to my A4tech webcam as the sound card, whenever I close the configuration screen even if I set it to the internal audio as the sound card. On the audio playback device preference in Amarok configuration, which only has the internal card listed and not the webcam, if I hit the "test sound" button, the test sound plays through the speakers just fine. However, no music will play out of the play lists on the Amarok main screen. This has happened on both computers that I upgraded to KDE 8.2. Other sound applications so far seem to work ok, though I haven't tested them all. Kaffeine and Banshee both play files ok. Any suggestions on where to troubleshoot next? Hi, I am trying to update my brother-in-law's computer which is a Sony Vaio (~2001) with 11.4 and KDE (11.4's version). And I keep getting random screens with B/W lines or just will not respond or several other errors. When I look at the F10 screen, I see messages about DRM errors and GPU hanging too fast....... What is the fix ? [opensuse] Keeping Yast Software Manager open

There are times when I need to re-use the software manager in yast. This may be at times when I'm trying to build a package from a tar file and I don't know all its dependency and therefore I install packages as the process fails due to missing packages. Other times it may be that the system has installed packages that not only do I not want installed but actually cause packages that I do use to fail (e.g. cyrus imap gets installed automatically and this causes my dovecot server to fail). I not only want to uninstall cyrus but I wish to mark it as taboo. I find that I cannot do this in one step so I uninstall cyrus and then have to restart the manager to and wait for it to refresh all the repositories and then mark cyrus as taboo. When I was testing out gnome I think that the manager there had an option to keep the manager open is there such a thing in the KDE version. (No, although it is yast the presentation in the two desktops were different, at least the last time I checked.) So, from the KDE side of things is there a way of keeping the yast software manager open while one processes files etc. until one is finished and then wants to close it? Hi, on one of my 11.4 systems I have an issue with Apache2 as it is dying on "reload" and therefore also with every logrotate run. The only interesting log seems to be [Sun Apr 15 21:30:04 2012] [notice] seg fault or similar nasty error detected in the parent process There is nothing really special on that system. I have another similar 11.4 system where I don't get this. Any ideas? I was just made aware of this new 'social browser' based off Chromium. It will use your accounts to spam itself over various social networks and Gmail. There are also indications it has a backdoor, and reports of it sending viruses through Gmail. As usual, if it isn't FOSS... be wary. [opensuse] how to change users home directory

12.1 LXDE Hi I want to move a home directory from /home/lynn to /home2/lynn I used Yast to set the new directory. All is well but now I do not show up in the ldxe login screen (I have to type my username rather than click on my icon in the login list) and login takes over 3 minutes. Moving back to /home/lynn works fine. I've also tried editing /etc/passwd directly with the same results. I have emptied my .cache folder and also emptied /tmp. I'm using lxdm login manager. Permissions are corect on the new folder. Why does the new login take so long? Wolfgang, I have noticed significant CPU load with firefox on 11.4 lately. Here is an example of top: 15128 david 20 0 976m 282m 26m S 28 7.4 1016:24 firefox-bin That's eating 28% of the cpu - no flash, no video, just text. For some reason this also seems to trigger higher than normal X CPU usage as well. The package I have is: MozillaFirefox-11.0-3.1.x86_64 MozillaFirefox-branding-openSUSE-5.0-17.1.x86_64 Anyone else report this? -- David C. [opensuse] LibreOffice - Avery business card (5371) synchronization

First I am not sure if this is the right place to ask this but the help about says this version is supplied by Novell. I have a business card that was created under an earlier version of openoffice using a blank avery template. On that version I was able to synchronize the other nine cards from the first one. I am now trying to modify the card and synchronize it. I cannot find the option to allow synchronization. If I call up a new business card in writer from File --> New --> Business Card . The select File Properities --> Options you can check synchronize contents. I have found no way under the above mentioned senerio in paragraph one. The problem with selecting the new bussiness card under file is it is not a blank card, it has some formatted fields. Some of which I cannot delete. Does anyone know how I can get around this issue or if I need to report it as a bug. The help screens say to use the options table mentioned above. Found no bugs on this but I'm not sure it is abug. [opensuse] Which openSUSE (evergreen/tumbleweed) for home server?

Hi! I've been running openSUSE since S.u.S.E. (I think it was spelled like that) 8.0 both in work as well as home. And I've always had problems in updating the system at home - where I can't just buy a new server every other year. Currently I'm still running 11.3 which has degraded really badly. I've reached EOL with openSUSE previously, but never has the repos disappeared or died like now. So, it's painfully clear that I need to update. First question is, which "version?" I mean, just the regular, some evergreen or tumbleweed? The last 2 ones are strange to me, I don't know them but they sound like they finally have a goal of being around a little longer. I'm not really interested in office software, but server software like samba, printing and mediatomb. I do also run experimental development things there (like node.js + mongoDB/redis) as well as media encoding. Despite updating the servers many times, I still don't know how it should be done. I've always done it somehow differently :-} I have 4 data disks (2 data + 2 backup, no raids) and system running on separate physical disk. How should I do it? A) do clean install on the system disk (and hope nothing happens to the data disks) and loose all settings on samba, mediatomb and all other serversoftware? or B) try some "update" from the installer? While there are many users, I think I'm probably the only one who logs in graphically... so will KDE be completely screwed up because of the old settings if I do update? Hi! According to this: http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Encrypted_root_file_system it used to be possible to encrypt the whole / partition in 11.4. However, I'm trying to install 12.1 on old laptop and during installation I get error saying that "you have assigned an encrypted file system to a partition with one of the following mount points: /, /usr, /boot, /var. This is not possible. Change mount point or use a nonloopbacked file system." I'm sure that web designers with a decade of content that no longer displays correctly are just as frustrated and bewildered by the firefox broken IE and Safari behavior in Gecko as I am with LibreOffice being incapable of correctly rendering character spacing in a decade worth of OpenOffice documents. We would all do a better job, as opensource, if we would put more emphasis on insuring a consistent product, especially on those that are intended to be relied on in a business or production environment. So when I say "another case of 'progress' which ends up not being progress after all" it is intended as a reminder that for opensource to truly be a reliable alternative, then software relied upon cannot radically depart from from what it does from release cycle to release cycle. And sometimes what for some is a small change for some completely changes the product in the eyes of another. As for FF and TB, I think they have done a great job in moving the ball forward. Granted, in my use of the browser and mailer I don't notice any difference between 3.X and 11.X, but I do notice the dramatic increase in CPU use and drop in interface responsiveness. On both those points - whatever 'progress' has been made in the browser has not ended up being 'progress' after all. However, security and privacy improvements aside, none of it makes any difference to the way I use it, except for the fact that it eats more CPU and takes longer to load. -- David C. I had bought a copy of SUSE Linux several years ago, version 10.1, and installed it just a couple weeks ago on an even older PC (with a CD reader, no USB ports and no DVD). It DOES have connection to the internet. Since this machine is crippled by modern standard, I am wondering if I can use it to visit one of your websites and upgrade the whole system to the latest SUSE Linux live, without having to burn any disks. This machine is just a basic unit, with a slow NIC, basic processor, small drive and CD reader, but I would like to be able to use it to re-familiarize myself with Unix. Just in order to find out if everything is set up correctly I am running zypper verify. Last times I ran it I get some problem with wine with some 40 times the information: Problem: nothing provides licenses needed by tunctl-1.5-3.21.i586 I am not using wine for the moment but found out that if I try to remove tunctl I am going through a long list of affected programs. Dear list, after reading several posts and websites, I finally got stuck with my configuration on a openSUSE 11.4 box and help in any form is highly appreciated. I want to make sure that both SMTP (on submission port: 587) and IMAPs (on port: 993) services are working with encryption, so that no clear text passwords are send over the wire. If I configure my Thunderbird mail client to work with Postfix on port 587, STARTTLS and non encrypted passwords, everything seems to work fine. My problem results from Cyrus and everything seems to work if I send out the passwords in plain and over the wire (no encryption at all). Unfortunately, as far as I get it, I am not able to establish a secure connection via STARTTLS or SSL/TLS. The thunderbird client always loses its connection. I need some help creating a SAMBA Server. - (Hope my attachment don’t get striped) I do NOT run any Domain or DNS Server locally. I use a web hosting company to host my web site - much cheaper that way. I have a Notebook with Windows 7 Home Premium on and I have it configured for a 'Workplace' and a 'workgroup' Using nothing but yast, if I can set up a SAMBA with too much command line input; could someone help me create a working SAMBA Server. I have already configured Yast in SAMBA Server including the workgroup name that is constant and not a DC. Best if I add a screen shot. I cannot do anything that refers to a domain as their is none. I have also set-up in Yast Windows domain membership and just input the same work group name. No Matter what I cannot see my MS PC and my MS PC cannot see my PC that has a SAMBA Server running..Yes they are both on they same subnet... One thing I've noticed is that KDE4 simply doesn't work as well as KDE3, even ignoring the differences in features. For example, often when I click on something to open it, I have to hunt to see where it is, rather than it opening on top of everything else. Stortly after openSUSE 12.1 was release, I upgraded a computer that had previously been running 11.0 very well. However, since installing 12.1, I've noticed frequent, extensive disk activity, that essentially renders my computer unresponsive for several seconds. I don't have to be doing anything for this disk activity to start. Has anyone else experienced this? Hello: This is on openSUSE 11.2. Because of system service some of our LAN's services was off for a while today. This means that kinternet icon showed a connected network and network traffic, but the nameserver part indicated a "waiting for reply' status. DHCP test timed out: # dhcpcd --test eth0 err, eth0: timed out Under these conditions I noticed that access of printers became very slow. For example in adobe reader it took 60-80 second to just show up the print dialog. Opening print properties dialog in it also took ~40 seconds, while sending a page to the printer took 40-70 secs. I measured similar delays in KPDF/kprinter. After turning off the network (hang up net connection in kinternet) accessing the printers was normal, showingprint dialog immediately, sending pages to the printer 1 sec. Connecting to the network again - printer access delayed again. Is this normal behavior? Well better to ask if this is known? I guess it might be related to cups server. But it definitely should not be such delays when printing independently of network status. I'm new to openSUSE, and Linux in general, and am having trouble with the audio visualization in Cinelerra. When I was taught how to use Cinelerra the file we used showed the audio track under the video, so that we could see where there was and wasn't audio. However, I never thought to ask how you make that show up. I have the bar where it should be, and I can hear the audio, but I get no visualization of the audio. I've tried searching, but I can't seem to come up with the correct wording to get an answer. Unfortunately, that layout doesn't seem available in the kbd-1.15.2-39.42.1.x86_64 package. I am trying to allow a Windows 7 machine to access files on my main computer. Under Linux I just use NFS and all Linux boxes can see all network shares if they have an IP address to start with. No username and password monkey business. With SAMBA this seems impossible. The Windows machine user is presented with demand for a username and password that have never been created. The SAMBA shared directories are visible from the Windows 7 client but just un-accessible. Is it not possible to not require a user name and password combination? This is on openSUSE 12.1. There is nothing I can find on the openSUSE Wiki and I see no SAMBA articles when I look for articles at the openSUSE site. NFS just works SAMBA is non functional. The stuff I am seeing when I google is just confusing nonsense that isn't openSUSE specific. I have multiple Java installations (in /opt; currently 8 of them), and they can be used in parallel without any problems. It's important that one doesn't set $JAVA_HOME globally. Dear all, I used to run a script sudo zypper ref sudo zypper lu echo "ready" sudo zypper up to install updates; recently, that led to "permission denied" errors (see below) that could only be avoided by becomin root and then calling zypper. What is the reason? And isn't it generally recommended to use sudo instead of su? Is it technically possible to use that same private key to generate a new csr for signing again now? Question two. [opensuse] libreoffice crash and failed recovery

Hi Everyone, Hope you all had a happy Easter. I recently found that desktop effects was making my system unstable. It would cause my whole system to freeze up and become completely unresponsive. It happened when I would hit left-alt-tab to switch between open applications. This didn't happen all the time, but it did begin to happen frequently. So I disabled desktop effects and have since not had a crash (except once when using virtual box, but that is another story). In any case, I had an open libreoffice document when the system froze up, and I had just saved it. I reset my computer, and when it rebooted I went to open up libreoffice again. It started the recovery process, which had always worked before without a problem, but this time it failed to recover the file. I did end up losing that file and had to rebuild it from scratch. In any case, I don't have a need to recover that old file anymore. However, I still am having a small problem with libreoffice. Whenever I open up any document in libreoffice, it still tries to recover that old document and fails. If you've followed the previous thread about network interface overruns, you will know that switching to a different network card didn't quite solve the problem, but it did significantly reduce the number of overruns. As Google suggested, it seems quite clear that the machine simply could not deal with the flow of interrupts, which was also evident in the slowing of the system clock! As far as I can tell, the clock was slowed down due to the system being unable to process the clock interrupt in a timely manner. Or is there another reason why the system clock would slow down during periods of many interrupts? Not just a few seconds, more than 1000s over e.g. 25-30mins. The question now remains - can this system be tuned/tweaked to process network interrupts better/faster? Any applicable kernel parameters? It is a dedicated firewall/router box with a PIII 800MHz and 512Mb RAM. [opensuse] error message: can't change permissions (ntfs)

Hello :-) One of my disks is NTFS When I copy anything with Dolphin to this disk, I get an error "can't change permissions on...". There is only one such message at a time (the copy don't stop), so at first it's not a real problem. I know this is due to the ntfs file system bad permission managing. But this message is pretty annoying, because it makes this dolphin session unavailable as long as the copy is running - for example if I have to copy several folders to a common one, I have to wait for the first copy to end before doing the second, etc... Just in case anyone else is seeing this rather annoying and odd behavior with the latest 11.2 release of Flash... it's a well known issue and Adobe is basically ignoring it. Their stock response is to say "We don't support Linux post 11.2" (even though this IS a bug in 11.2) and then they close the bug. See the bug reports at: https://bugbase.adobe.com/index.cfm?event=bug&id=3077076 https://bugbase.adobe.com/index.cfm?event=bug&id=3097844 https://bugbase.adobe.com/index.cfm?event=bug&id=3109467 https://bugbase.adobe.com/index.cfm?event=bug&id=3120888 https://bugbase.adobe.com/index.cfm?event=bug&id=3136745 (still open.. for now) You can work around the bug by disabling Hardware Acceleration and reloading the page... or you roll back to Flash 11.1. The workaround isn't a fix... it's just a workaround. I don't now how critical it is to have HW Accel enabled for most people... but so far it seems to be the only way around the problem (unless someone here knows of another solution), and Adobe have made it pretty clear so far that they're not interested in fixing it. I have a new Android cellphone, my first. This is an HTC Aria. I want to e able to exchange files between this phone and my desktop inux box --oS v11.4 at the moment. I expected that the phone would be recognized when connected to a USB port, just like any other USB device, but it isn't. I assume there is a way to get openSuSE to detect the phone. Previously to my HP DV7-3085DX (which works perfectly under openSUSE 12.1) I had a Toshiba P105-S6207. That laptop died in the sense that it wouldn't turn on anymore; but thanks to a local guy with a pile of junk [spare parts] it has been resurrected. This message is just to put on the record that this laptop works perfectly with openSUSE 12.1. Previously under 10.3 (the last distribution it ran) I had to play with the ACPI to get sound and manually load the finger print reader module. But after I reinstalled openSUSE 11.4 via CD and then zypper dup'd to openSUSE 12.1 [all of which worked perfectly] ... everything "just works". Although this laptop is now 5+ years old performance is suprisingly good and I can log right into the GNOME Shell using the finger print reader. Audio "just works". Wifi "just works" If someone needs a great laptop on the cheap and you can find one - picking up a used one of these would be a solid investment. Hello: I have an HP TFT monitor with 1600x1200 native resolution. This works perfectly in graphics mode with its native resolution. I have nvidia card and proprietary nvidia driver. But when I switch to terminal window (eg ctrl+alt+1) my monitor gives the following message: "Input signal out of range Optimum mode 1600x1200 / 60 Hz" After a few seconds the monitor turns out automatically. How the output frequency and resolution of the terminal view can be adjusted/set in openuse (11.2)? Hi, I am curious when will Gnome 3.4 will be available for openSUSE? It's not in factory (I am running Milestone 2). Even LibreOffice 3.5 is not there yet, it's been a month of release I guess. On the contrary Ubuntu has all the latest packages. I am just curious to know about the update strategy of openSUSE. I do love to play with latest packages and write about them so just wanted to know if I am missing something or it does take time for openSUSE to update to the latest packages. [opensuse] Networkmanager and OS12.1

Hi, I have an older laptop that ran OS 11.1 very nice. Recently I installed 12.1 and now I have a problem with the networkmanager. I connected to my accesspoint without problems. But after a shutdown the networkmanager does not connect any more. After rebooting, the networkmanager does not see my accesspoint. When I disable the wireless network (via networkmanager) and re-enable it, I can see my accesspoint in the list, and the connection is made. This is not how I expect the networkmanager to behave. [opensuse] Is my machine too old for OS 12.1 ?

[opensuse] Should openSUSE review it's Security Policies?

As many are aware, Linus Torvalds has started a rant about the security policies in openSUSE for things that require the root password. From his Google+ post(https://plus.google.com/102150693225130002912/posts/1vyfmNCYpi5), he names these: Time Zone changes Adding a Printer Adding a wireless network. Now, I don't usually see the wireless issue because KNetworkmanager in KDE3(which I use) has never asked the root password for adding a new network. While at 37, I've never changed timezones(I lead a boring life) I would have to agree that having to use the root password for this would be annoying if I needed to change it because of a flight or something. I've worked with Linus on a hardware issue years ago, and I think we should probably at least consider reviewing the policies if they do need changed. [opensuse] How to delete everything but the newest 5 files?

Hi, I'd like to let cron clean up a directory that holds hourly backups. So there are 24 new files every day. I'd need some scripting that sorts the content of this directory and then removes everything but the 5 newest files. Can anyone clue me in as to how to use dumpkeys (or potentially a UTF-8 aware successor) on 12.1 with en_US.UTF-8? Goog. hasn't shown me much help except that the euro is appearently U+20ac, which isn't even listed by dumpkeys. Please note that I'm not using neither gnome nor kde to manage my keyboard (xmodmap). If anyone can point me to a resource which tells me how to create my own compose combinations... :-) Thanks in advance. Hello: How can I save images that are opening when I click their thumbnails in certain pages? One example: http://www.45cat.com/record/abbapromo001 the big image that opens after clicking the image in the page. Another example, probably a different type: http://elektronika.vatera.hu/navigacio_adovevo/gps/4_3_gps_mp3_mp4_full_eu_… Clicking the GPS image on the right opens a bigger image in the midle. How can I save it? I have openSUSE 11.2 with KDE 3.5.10. Mostly I use opera web browser, occasionally firefox or seamonkey. Thanks. Hi, I am mistaken somewhere while download. Can one please tell me the correct step by step process for downloading youtube videos using wget (command line or gui)....I know this is simple thing, but I have facing some problems, not able to get the video id...etc...and the correct way. [opensuse] lost graphical boot screen

12.1 Hi I've lost the graphical boot screen. The first one that appears after you switch on. It's the one with the menu where you can choose other systems to mulit boot if you have them installed. I had normal or Failsafe to choose from. Now all I get is an ugly text screen which says grub version 0.97 and the same two options but in text mode. How can I get the nice screen back? I just tried it at that alibaba link and it takes me back to the top of the previous page, instead of where I was actually at on the previous page. Not sure how to stop that from happening other than to not go to that site again if I don't have to, heh. For me it's not too big a deal really. I was working in Thunderbird 11.0 and accidently clicked something. I lost all folder except "send". Does anyone know how to get them back?
