[opensuse] Gnome 3.4, Libreoffice 3.5 in openSUSE?
Hi, I am curious when will Gnome 3.4 will be available for openSUSE? It's not in factory (I am running Milestone 2). Even LibreOffice 3.5 is not there yet, it's been a month of release I guess. On the contrary Ubuntu has all the latest packages. I am just curious to know about the update strategy of openSUSE. I do love to play with latest packages and write about them so just wanted to know if I am missing something or it does take time for openSUSE to update to the latest packages. That's sad :( I am doing as much as I can to bring more users to openSUSE. Switched to it recently and loving it so far. Was just curious if I was doing something wrong -- maybe the packages were there but I couldn't find them. Thanks for your reply. I'm only guessing, but given that Canonical is a commercial operation, it is reasonable to assume they have more resources available.

They are probably available somewhere in the OBS repos. Have you checked those too? -- Per Jessen, Zürich (17.6°C) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

They don't, they just use them differently.

GNOME 3.4 is being build first for Factory (happening right now) and then the GNOME team will start working on 12.1 and 11.4. It just takes a little time... LibreOffice has surprised me too. The person normally building this has been unavailable and nobody has picked it up - a people thing...

Hi, the good news is that the LO-3.5.2 packages should appear in the LibreOffice:Unstable project[1] the following week. I am getting very close to get it built. Also the first runtime tests look promising. If it gets a good feedback, I will put the packages also to the LibreOffice:Stable project two weeks later or so.

I am the person who prepare LO packages for openSUSE. Well, I am also the person that helps with the upstream release. The LibreOffice project is still young. All people around do their best to make it successful. This is why I slightly preferred the upstream work over the openSUSE work last weeks. Note that LibreOffice uses time based release process[3]. The result is that .0 release might include quite some annoying bugs. More conservative users should wait for later bugfix releases. LibreOffice-3.5.0 was better than expected. I see the demand for the packages, so I need to change the approach for further releases. I think about creating another project LibreOffice:Head or so, that would provide packages based on last LO sources. If I update it frequently (every week or two), it will be easier to produce the packages for the final release. Note that LibreOffice development goes quickly forward. It is not trivial software. I needed few days to update the packages from 3.4 to 3.5, make it built and work. i got libreoffice 3.5.2 from the LO-unstable repo today, and while i haven't used it extensively yet, it seems to work fine. -- phani. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Yup, I have published it for openSUSE 11.4 and 12.1 yesterday. I have published it for Factory an hour ago. The build for Tumbleweed still fails because of https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=754146 I still have to fix build of the LagnaugeTool. Also, I need to fix build with debuginfo, with Java 1.5 classes, double check some things. Then I might be able to push it to Factory. Anyway, it should be well usable as it is now. Of course, feedback is welcome. Petr, got it installed here on 12.1 x86_64 and it seems just fine. Thanks for your work! -- Jonathan Dlouhy ------------------------- Pitchers.bat found. Delete dh.sys (Y,y)? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I cannot comment about Gnome but you can go to the LibreOffice home page and download the 3 files of LibreOffice 3.5 and install them yourself. And you don't need to be a rocket scientist to do so! But read the instructions on how to install while you are on that site: http://www.libreoffice.org/ . Oooops! Sorry, but I forgot to mention that one needs to make sure that the file libpng12 is installed for 3.5 to work. As soon as you branched the current version and contribute to changes back to lift it to 3.4. ;) See http://en.openSUSE.org/openSUSE:How_to_contribute_to_Factory about how to contribute to the openSUSE project. See also http://en.openSUSE.org/GNOME with pointers to various GNOME repositories. Be this nice and update the page if you find information which aswers your initial question better.
It's not in factory (I am running Milestone 2). Even LibreOffice 3.5 is not there yet, it's been a month of release I guess.
Didn't you raised the same question before? And there had been answers. IIRC the people working on this could need some help. See http://lists.openSUSE.org/opensuse/2012-02/msg00772.html See also http://en.openSUSE.org/LibreOffice Keep in mind that the same people working on LibreOffice also feed released products with a current LibreOffice version and are also active on the upstream delevopement.

It needs time, it needs man powers as stressed by others. And sometimes even developers are a bit more careful and don't push the latest, greatest version to the main repository, Instead they keep it for some time in a development branch as we do it with the network:samba:TESTING repository for example. I wish I could. I am a journalist/writer who happen to use Linux. I do contribute by spreading the word and helping users in migrating to Linux. :-)

Yes. I did. It said that it may be available in 3 weeks. It's more than one and half month now and I was just checking. I wrote articles about openSUSE (especially one where I mentioned why I switched from Ubuntu to openSUSE) but I got a lot of mails about my remark on latest packages. LO 3.5 has some nice features such as Grammar check. Windows/Mac users can just grab the latest version and install. Linux users have to wait until its in repos (I am talking about average users). So, a lot of users asked how do I recommend openSUSE over Ubuntu when they get latest packages. I did not have any answer. I do understand the resource crunch and by writing more about openSUSE I hope the user/contributor base will increase. I appreciate your time and effort in helping out users like me, who in return can't be of much help, at least from development point of view :-) Thanks Swapnil -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
