Sorry SuSE: 9.1 is Waste of time and money!

I am sorry to conclude that my upgrade from SuSE 9.0 Pro to 9.1 Pro has been waste of time and money for me, so far. The same I have to say about the free SuSE "Installation support". The reason is that my SuSE 9.1 installation only detects 1 of my 3 SCSCI devices (as I wrote in another subject on this forum: http://lists.suse.com/archive/suse-linux-e/2004-May/3254.html) Yamaha 4416S CDRW recorder detected HP DVD Writer 100i NOT detected Epson 1640SU scanner NOT detected It's rather stupid. I have installed 9.1 using the DVD disk just in the HP DVD drive, but after the installation of 9.1, the KDE/Konqueror /media/recorder cannot access it and YaST2 cannot install additional software from it. Only one "Cdrecorder" is found in My computer and that is the Yamaha 4416 drive, which the KDE/Konqueror file manager assign as /media/recorder11. I am sure 9.1 is the reason, as I hadn't this problems with 9.0. I have tried both an update and two several new installation of 9.1. Neither SJDS nor Windows on the same multiboot PC have problems to detect these devices. In my opinion SuSE should therefore debug 9.1 better and longer, and not leave the problems to the customers. I see SuSE notes on their web saying that they know SCSI scanners are not detected in 9.1. But regarding my HP DVD writer problem, the SuSE support (as usual) don't take the responsibility and argue that this problem (a combination of IDE disk and SCSI devices) isn't included in their free installation support! This sounds remarkable, and I have never had a modern PC of so simple model or configuration that it has fitted the limited rules for the free installation support. Terje J. Hanssen

[SLE] RealPlayer G2 on SuSe 6.2

Yesterday, I finally got sound going on my Linux setup. I downloaded RealPlayer G2 and it worked beautifully. Today, RealPlayer run but no sound coming out. All other sound functions still work. I can still play my CD, have system sound BUT no sound when I run RealPlayer. /var/log/message said kernel: Sound: DMA (output) timed out - IRQ/DRQ config error? but KDE sound still work. I have re-installed RealPlayer 3 times now, still no sound when I run the RealPlayer. Any help is appreciated. Adding fonts?

Hi all, Reading some mails on the GIMP mail list, I ran across the procedure to install some more fonts for not only Gimp, but the system and StarOffice to use also. Well, I installed the fonts, went to the shell and issued the command xset fp+ <font directory> and then the rehash command and all fonts are there! Ok, that went well, but each time I restart the system, I have to do it all over again? Hi, I am trying to set up a simple repo, I read on the opensuse site about a binary called genIS_PLAINcache, because I can't see to find it or the package yast2-packmanager either. Can someone help. [opensuse] installation error

Started to intall 11.4 on a new laptop with Windows 7 pre-installed. Installation from DVD downloaded (MDsum checked). After the various choices of partioning and software (accepted defaults for partionning and mostly for software), when installation begins, it stops almost immediately with: failure occurred during following action: creating volume /dev/sd7. System error code was: -1007 sda7 was to be the swap; sda8 root (ext4), and sd9 home (ext4). sda1 is Windows/C; sda2 is Windows/D. I suspect the reason for using 7, 8, and 9 is that this is the third try, and that the first one set up 3,4 and 5. The Windows partition appears to have been correctly shrunk, and Windows will still boot. The installation suggests these three linux partitions be set up (and gives me the chace to alter them), so my guess is that there is space there but unpartitioned. When the error is presented, it asks if I want to go ahead anyway: so far I have said no. Machine specs: Intel mobile i5-241M 2.3Ghz; NVIDIA GT 555M 2GB PCIe; 8 GB DDR-3 1333; motherboard: Intel HM65 Express Chipset Mainboard. Suggestions? [opensuse] Howto repair - corrupt jpeg file - anything new out there?

Braintrust, (graphics file gurus): I have a handful of family pictures that have gotten corrupted somehow. A majority have the thumbnails in place showing the initial exif header is in good shape, but the scan section may be hosed. All pictures were taken from the same kodak camera, so a hex edit replacement of the jpg header may be an option. I don't know, I've just been googling for ideas. I suspect the corruption occurred in the copy from the flash drive to the hard-disk. The flash drive is long long overwritten. I'm looking for any and all ideas. Different apps, different potential mods/recompiles to libjpeg, anything?? I've tried the different apps, gimp, kview, convert, etc.. convert gives the most descriptive error: family_pictures/2008/12> convert 2008-12-24-095905.jpg -resize 95% ~/tmp/2008-12-24-095905.jpg convert: Corrupt JPEG data: 3896 extraneous bytes before marker 0x51 `2008-12-24-095905.jpg' @ warning/jpeg.c/JPEGWarningHandler/325. convert: Unsupported marker type 0x51 2008-12-24-095905.jpg @ error/jpeg.c/JPEGErrorHandler/297. convert: missing an image filename `/home/david/tmp/2008-12-24-095905.jpg' @ error/convert.c/ConvertImageCommand/3015. From the error I can tell that there is a messed up jpeg marker, but I haven't a clue to what markers are legit and what aren't. (obviously it doesn't like 0x51...) What say the gurus? Hi all, I have an openSUSE 11.4 32Bit system installed on its own disk. Additionally attached are 2 mirrored 2-Port 3Ware raid cards, striped as Linux Raid, then mounted as /home/Data (ext4). The softraid was mounted after the OS installation within fstab, because I wanted Data to be on the raid and not be dependent on or be part of the OS FS directly. I've never had a softraid before. Hard-Raid recover is painless with 2Ware, and immune to failing OS. I got a backup of the 4 TB raid; it has 2 TB data and a restore takes quite a while. Now I lost my OS Installation, the disk is unresponsive. Before I go ahead, I was wondering which way to go. I am planning to install a new system and just hope the soft raid will be there when I partition. What should I watch out for? I have searched and read some ways to recover defective raids in the TLDP.org and others, but the raid was ok. It was a mount as /home/Data directory. I will mount it after the new installation as /home/Data again. Will that work ok? How does the raid-setup work? Is the raid-partition info kept on the disks? There is no controller with bios as in hardware raid to store the Linux softraid info. As far as I know, HW-raids save the raid-partition info on the disks and on the controller. [opensuse] burning of a suse install CD

My son is finally so far that he wants to try out opensuse. Up to now he has only used Windows. The problem is that windows seems to neglect the .iso extension. It does not show up. Only in chrome with which he made the download. USB seems possible but was done without success. Read a lot on the web to no avail. The iso file seems to be there as far as he can see. openSUSE-11.4-KDE-LiveCD-x86_64-2.8.0.iso No burning a cd (dvd burner not available). Remember from past discussions that such burning is not without problems. Since some updates last week, I am unable to use the passwd command to change passwords. When I try, I get an error message: Unable to generate a salt. Check your crypt settings. Cannot create salt for blowfish crypt Error: Password NOT changed. passwd: Authentication token manipulation error Any fix for this? I am migrating my music over from itunes to run on Amarok (or another player that may be better and can sync an ipod touch running ios 4.2.1). The first step is to copy my music files from my itunes directories into the music folder on my hard drive, /home/music. The problem is, I have about 1/3 or 1/4 of these files purchased directly from itunes, and so they are in the proprietary itunes format, *.m4p. I will not be sharing my purchased music with anyone, so I will not be violating any copyright laws, so no worries there. However, I still need to be able to read these songs with the music player in OS 11.4, and I still need to be able to manage my ipod touch in OS without going back to windows. My first thought is that I would like to segregate all the m4p files into one directory folder. /homes/music has multiple sub-directories with the artists names, and those have sub-directories with album names on them. I was thinking the command line would be faster than one by one, if there is a command line program similar to 'mv' that will look into a directory and all its sub-directories to find files of type *.m4p, and move them to a separate directory. From there I can work with them in some way. At the very least I will know which ones are in the m4p format so that I can go back to my windows pc, burn them to audio cd (if there are not too many), and then rip them back to mp3. Joy in every success, frustration in failures, but always an opportunity to learn! and many thanks to all of you who have continually helped me solve the little configuration problems that come up as I get my system started and complete the windows migration! So, here I am now with skype and a camera and a microphone. My microphone is a simple plug in, line input. My camera is an a4tech pk-720mj usb 2.0 camera. I plugged it in and didn't really know what to do. Searched the internet, found a suggestion - download a webcam program and see if it works! So I went to Yast, found 2 packages, wxcam, and webkam. I got both of them. When I open up the program, wxcam has a very good clear image (yea! :) ) Webkam says it cannot find the device (aw :( ). The GUI for webkam does not allow me to select a device - it just says no device found. So using wxcam, I took a test video recording. It records movement fine, but it does not record sound. Yet my camera has sound with it. I opened audacity and set it to look to the usb pc camera (a box next to the microphone) for the input, and it records sound very clearly. The camera is about 2 feet in front of me, so the microphone is of good quality to pick me up well from there. I installed and set up skype. The chat feature works. I tried to get it to use the camera as the sound input, but it will only take the plug-in microphone. It says that pulse audio is managing my sound, so I downloaded pulse audio manager in yast, but I don't know what to do with it. I tested the skype video also. My video is really really dark, but not totally black. It is dark when using skype, but on wxcam, it has a good, clear, bright video. Ok, I know I haven't given a ton of technical specs, only general things. I am wanting to figure out how to: 1 - get skype to be able to use the microphone from the webcam 2 - get the skype video to be bright and clear like it is on wxcam 3 - get wxcam to record both video and audio instead of only video 4 - if there is a better program for managing audio and video input devices, to know what that is and how to use it. It can be gui or command line, as long as I can figure out where to look up the information on how to use the program. I know that my pc is running pulseaudio, but I am not sure how to get the best information. The pulseaudio manager lists under the 'devices' tab the soundcard on the motherboard (alsa_input.pci-0000_00_05.0.analog-stereo), and the a4tech pc camera. Guys, Wolfgang, With the new 'tab pins' in Firefox, how do you tell it to just open the pinned tabs at start? The pinned tabs reopen, but FF also opens my home pages or tabs from last time as well. Since I have pinned the pages I want to open on start -- that's all I want to open.. But, you only have the preferences options to "Start with Homepage", "Blank Page, or "Open my Tabs from Last Time". Is there some way I can just get it to open the pinned tabs and nothing else? [opensuse] libreoffice hangs at startup

Hello: I have openSUSE 11.2 and libreoffice 3.3.2.2 packages (downloaded from repos when they were available). When I start any libreoffice application as usual, the program shows the splash screen and hangs. If I start it from command line, eg oowriter program, it gives neither any error nor other message. If I login as another user the program runs as expected. I have renamed my ~/.libreoffice directory but it did not fix the problem. I guess it is related to my home folder but I don't know what to look for. Any idea? I have a pretty by-the-book (or HowTo) setup that get mail from remote locations using fetchmail, passes it though postfix which then sees ~/.forward and leads to procmail to process via spamassassin and sanitiser and put it into mailboxes which are eventually read over IMAP using a Dovecot server. I get to wonder ... This is a bit heavy handed. All the mail is for me, this is not a corporate server. Yes, I have many addresses but they are all 'me'. It is procmail that determines the mailbox. So I'm wondering if there is a way to get postfix out of the loop for INCOMING mail. -- I will not attack your doctrines nor your creeds if they accord liberty to me. [opensuse] kde - disappearing system tray?

All, I installed 11.4 on a new laptop yesterday. I had the system tray disappear when I applied the first large set of online updates. I moved .kde out of the way and let it re-recreate. That brought my system tray back for a couple operational hours. Now I was just web browsing etc. and the system tray went away again. When it happens I lose wireless. Anyone know what's going on? [opensuse] Poor battery life with Opensuse 11.4

Hi, I have a thinkpad e520 that I am running opensuse 11.4 tumbleweed on. While most everything works I notice that the battery life is quite poor under linux compared to windows. I can only get maybe a couple of hours under linux but 4-5 hours under windows. These have dual graphics (intel + AMD Radeon HD 6630M switchable). I have blacklisted the radeon module so that (hopefully) only the inbuilt intel graphics is used. The radeon module is no longer loaded and intel sandybridge is shown as the driver in gnome, but still the battery doesn't last long. I do notice that the fan seems to be constantly on. [opensuse] installing openSUSE on an older pc

Ok, next problem. I have an older pc for my kids that was running windows xp on it. It is an old Dell desktop with a dual core (I think) Intel Pentium 4 processor and 256MB of RAM. I completely removed XP and installed 32bit OS 11.4 and it is now up and running. However, it runs really, really slow. Basically it is unusable. I kind of expected that, but I wanted to try it out anyway. I assume the problem is not enough memory, right? So what is the best course of action to get it usable for my kids? Is the problem with KDE? Does KDE take up too much RAM to run in the new 4.6? Should I try and downgrade to an earlier version of KDE? If so, how do I get the older KDE packages and install them? Or is the problem with the whole distribution? I have disks for OS 11.1 and OS 9.3. Should I install one of those instead of 11.4? What do I need to look at to figure out the source of the problem and figure out how to fix it, if the easy solution is not just downgrading everything? [opensuse] setting up a dual boot system

Ok, my next project is to migrate my work laptop over to a dual boot system. It has a windows vista installation on a 500gb hard drive. (It was originally a 320 gb hard drive, and I made a mirror image of that to a 500gb hard drive, changed it out, so that I would have extra room.) Here is the setup that the Yast analysis suggested while I am installing SUSE linux from the installation disk. So I tried to "move" the extended partition using the expert partitioner (I am still in the install program), and it would not let me, saying that the drive had already been created. (this probably happened when the power went out in the middle of the first install, and I am having to reinstall now, but I don't know for sure). So my question is, if I shrink the windows D volume to 70 GB (I only have 55 gb of data on it), will I be able to format those sectors later and mount it as another partition, like /sda4, and use it to store more data? Would it be better to just go on and keep it as NTFS? The only way that would help me out is that I could store files on that drive that would be usable to both windows and linux. However, the only thing I am really planning to use windows for is updating my ipod, and a particular work program I have that won't run under anything besides windows. What are the disadvantages to keeping it as NTFS? Does linux access the files more slowly if they are in NTFS format? [opensuse] Libre Office - Howto set paste to default to "Unformatted Text?"

Guys I hate word processors they try to think for themselves and end up causing formatting problems galore. The recent Libre Office sucks for copy/paste operations. If I try to paste plain text from an email or text file into a document, Libre automatically screw the document format up by changing all pasted text to a fixed width font. I don't want paste touching the font, I just want it to paste the text into the current document in whatever font the document is in. To accomplish this I have to use "Paste Special" and then choose "Unformatted Text". That works and should be the default for paste anyway. My question is where can I set this as the default behavior for paste?? I don't want to have to use "Paste Special" just to paste "Normal Plain Text" every time I paste. What say the Libre Office gurus? Where is this magical setting? -- David C. I am trying to figure out why Akonadi-Kontact ask me everytime the system startup a KWallet password. It's there a way to make them work properly ? Maybe it's related or not. If a close Kontact and try to open it later ocassionally it does not open at all but other programs (KMail, Calendar, etc.) are able to open despite Kontact. [opensuse] DVD Input/output Error - Cannot read DVD disks

Hello I recently purchased two new DVD burners. Neither of this DVD drive were able to read some DVD R that I burned with my older DVD burner. I am able to read the disk with a windows computer so I do not think there is a problem with the DVD media. I experienced the same problem with both of the DVD burners. I cannot read the first 271 MB of a disk and then will report an Input/output error for the remaining data. Have manufactures moved the error handling from the DVD burner to the Windows driver? Did I purchash two bad DVD burners? The first of DVD burner was a Memorex and my current burner is a Plextor PX-L890SA. Hey, I am posting this here as I learn the whole suse linux system and try to complete my migration from windows. I have had some issues with the internet, in particular with firefox not loading web pages. I frequently get the error "Firefox can't find the server at ..." when I try to load a web page, and so I hit "try again". I decided to do a comparison and I opened chrome and firefox at the same time, went to cnn.com at the same time, and clicked to open 6 new tabs (using right-click, open in new tab) on the same first 6 story links at the same time. Chrome opened all 6 tabs without having to try and refresh any a 2nd time, taking less than 3 minutes for all 6 tabbed pages to open. Firefox opened 1 of the tabs, gave me the could not find the server error on 2 of them, and on the other 3 just kept going and going and going, but no page ever came up. I do not have a proxy server set up (I don't really even know how to do that). I am using oS 11.4, KDE 4.6, and firefox 6.0. I would not know what other information to post to assist in troubleshooting. In any case, it seems that this is a firefox configuration problem, and I would like to know where to start, because firefox offers so much more than chrome AFAIK. [opensuse] how to read a directory after adding it in konsole

I expect there is a pretty simple solution to this one. I went to konsole and using the command line I added a directory (mkdir) and copied some files into it. However, then in dolphin, I could not read the new directory. It would not show up. So I did what every other newb like me would do and logged out of kde and then logged back in, and there then it showed up in the file manager dolphin. I know I should not have to log out and log back in, but I don't know how to get it get dolphin to pick up the new directory. Can someone tell me what the right procedure is, if it is in a konsole or in some other way, to have dolphin recognize the new directory? [opensuse] Any suse/linux as a mobile dev platform - why not?

Guys, Just wanted to check if anyone knew of suse and/or linux based project related to the iPhone? In the past two weeks there have been a number of articles noting Mac OS passed linux as a development platform (still well behind m$). I have always been amazed who linux is generally in the forefront with any new hardware providing functionality and development tools, but they are virtually non-existent with the iPhone. Surely it isn't so much of a technical limitation given the headway others have made jailbreaking the iphone. Is it just the threat of apples' muscle that has development blocked or is there really something that Mac OS does that linux can't that makes is suited for mobile development? What say those in the know? I'm really curious what is suppressing IOS/mobile development using linux as the development platform? -- David C. [opensuse] Thunderbird vs. Kontact vs. Evolution

Hey to all, I am just looking for opinions from people that have used these programs, and how you might compare them. I am using thunderbird right now, but I find it very difficult to configure the GUI fonts. At the same time, I really like the ability to keep messages from the same thread together in my inbox or other folders, and thunderbird is far superior to outlook's handling of this. I am migrating over from MS Outlook, and would like to import all my old email, besides my calendar, tasks, and address book. I started using thunderbird only because I am moderately familiar with it. Any advice, and info on common problems you may have encountered, would be most helpful. [opensuse] cannot get kmail to download imap gmail or folder structure

I just started up kmail, and I was able to get my pop account working for another email that I have. This email account, at gmail, I have set up on imap. I set up the account using the account wizard, and it will not download the folder structure I have set up on gmail, nor will it download any email. It also does not give me any error message - at least I don't see any. The only indication that when I right-click on the googlemail folder in the left folder pain and hit "check mail", down at the bottom left it says "checking account Googlemail.com for new mail." It will continue to say this until indefinitely, and it never downloads new mail. I verified that my security settings, port settings, and everything are exactly as I have them on thunderbird, where I am also using this account, with IMAP settings, and everything works fine using thunderbird. Since some time now I have problems with copying and moving of emails. In one case I wanted to return an email which slipped through the filter from a sub- folder into the inbox. It was moved but not into the inbox but under the "KMail Folder" which is the main header for the folders. Just now I wanted to copy an email from the sent-mail folder into the inbox with the same end-result. Emails which are landing int this "KMail Folder" can be read but not deleted moved or mishandled in any other form. This "KMail Folder" header is a non existent part of the kmail2 contents and a removal with force with midnight commander is not possible. The 15 emails do not pose a problem. It is the handling of moving and copying of emails back to the inbox which is problematic. Anybody who can replicate this behavior? [opensuse] Dratted 'nouveau' driver...

I just got myself a nice non CRT monitor. Along with it I also got an nvidia card. The monitor works fine, this is the second nvidia card I've had that completely screws up my system. After 30 seconds my mouse barely works, typing anything is a joke as things double-tap or triple-tap without one knowing, ad nauseum. It's a similar card to my other one that I thought was bad, but made by a different company. In the meantime I was awaiting this new card, I used the onboard video, nvida also. Things worked great on my old CRT and worked okay on this new monitor until the new card screwed things up and I switched to the onboard video with this new monitor. Now I can't get to X. I've tried to install the nvidia driver that was working fine before, but it keeps popping up that the kernel is using the nouveau module and I have to disable it before I can install the nvidia driver. I've uninstalled everything 'nouveau' from YaST and still get the same problem. I'm now in 'safe' mode, but of course the graphics are horrible, etc. Can anyone help me out here? How do I get the kernel to stop using the 'nouveau' module so I can install the nvidia driver and get back to my regular system with my new monitor? Hi all, I am setting up my laptop with OS 11.4 32 bit and KDE 4.6.00. Just a few setup problems. First of all, I have a high resolution monitor, so all my fonts are small. I am working on that. But the first thing I want to adjust is the profile setting on bash. I go to settings -> configure profiles -> edit profile, and I try to change from small font black background with green color to white or anything else, and it won't adjust. I tried to slide the slider bar to make the font bigger, and on the dialog box it shows a bigger font, but it does not take the bigger font. The "apply" button doesn't do anything, or gray out or apply any changes no matter what changes I make. I have made the adjustment on my other pc with no problem. It seems like the application of any changes I make is disabled, whether I hit the apply button or the ok button. What other information do I need to post here in order to troubleshoot? I recently downloaded and installed on my desktop machine the current KindleForPC (1.6.1). This release has the minor problem that it can't open books(!), which makes it useless. Fortunately, I have the installer for v1.5.0, which I know to be fundtional because it is running well on my laptop machine. Both machines run oS v11.4. I uninstalled the v1.6.1 Kindle from Wine by deleting the directory ~/.wine/..../Kindle as suggested by some of the advice I found through Google, then dropping the installer on the Wine configuration window; this is how I have previously installed Kindle on both machines in more than one installation. But the drop operation fails -- the installer icon is overlaid by a "Don't" road traffic sign. I assume that I need to do something lese in the bowels of the pseudo- Windows structure to convince it to accept the replacement installation. [opensuse] Samba & symlinks

I've recently set up a server running openSUSE 11.4. I have set up some common file areas in the /srv partition, which I link to from user directories. If I use WinSCP to access the user accounts, I can follow the symlinks to /srv. However, if I use Samba, I get an error that files on /srv are not accessible and it might be due to permissions. I have tried the "follow symlinks" and "wide links" options in smb.conf, but still no luck. Hi .
