[opensuse] "Disabling IRQ #16" and Video Slow-Down

Hi, In my new openSUSE 11.4 I'm noticing a couple of odd phenomena, which seem to be correlated: 1) Every once in a while, there's a system message (displayed in shell windows and in the notifier widget) that says "... Disabling IRQ #16" (I believe I've seen it say #19, too). 2) After a few of these "... Disabling ..." messages, I notice that drawing becomes slow and sluggish and is most noticeable with some of the desktop effects like fading in and out and the rotating cube desktop switching animation. By some measures the graphics slow-down is extreme. The glxgears FPS number drops by a factor of well over 1000! Then, while running glxgears (as it showed me FPS numbers in the teens), KWin suspended desktop effects. At that point, glxgears returned to FPS numbers in the 25,000 range. If I then re-enable desktop effects, glxgears' FPS numbers again drop into the teens (and KWin suspends desktop effects). The first time this happened, I logged out and back in (knowing this causes the Xorg server to restart and the nVidia drivers to presumably be closed and reopened) and normal performance was restored for about 3 1/2 hours before the slow-down reoccurred. This system has new hardware, all of it very fast. The video card is an nVidia GTX 550 Ti with 1 GB of RAM. I installed the proprietary nVidia driver from the repository linked from opensuse.org's Additional Repositories page. Any hints or suggestions for diagnosing this problem? [opensuse] Influencing zypper update output?

Hi, When I call zypper update, it first lists all packages that are available from several repositories in newer versions and that will not be updated since it would be a repository resp. vendor change. (It's a rather long list since I don't take everything from Packman or from various specialized repositories. :-)) Well, I know that I don't want to update these packages; I would have called zypper dup if I really wanted to. Is there any way to make zypper not output this first section? [opensuse] X11 forwarding on 11.4

I have two main boxes running, 11.2 which I replaced and relegated to server status for email and http, and 11.4 as main box. I ssh into the 11.2 box to read mail and administer ... I can access 11.2 from 11.4 and my wife's win7 (cygwin w/X and/or putty) box via ssh -X w/o any problem. Can run X apps w/o a problem. But with identical /etc/ssh/ssh{d}_config files I cannot forward X from 11.4 to the win7 box. [opensuse] Issue when running make

Hi. I want to install a program, that I cannot find in .RPM. It's in the .TAR format. The reason why I mentioned by own experience is that the 1-click installation I mentioned above does just that: it automatically adds both repos during the process of the installation. And this 1-click installation fails because an error message comes up stating that there is "no valid data" - or some such words - in one of the above repos. [opensuse] opensuse with JMicron JMB362/363 Fake RAID (SoftRAID) driver

Hi all, I just got a JMicron JMB362/363 Fake RAID (SoftRAID). I searched the internet, and most are M$ drivers, and some mention Linux. None seem to have a real good idea how to get it to work properly. Does anyone know of a method to let opensuse read the hardware raid setup off of the controller, and not the separate drives. I have: uname -a Linux Linux 2.6.37.6-0.5-desktop #1 SMP PREEMPT 2011-04-25 21:48:33 +0200 i686 athlon i386 GNU/Linux on an AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3200+ CPU and a GA-K8N Ultra-9 Mobo. There is a Sil 3114 SATA controller on the Moboard, also with Softraid problems. Another onboard SATA controller NVIDIA CK804 SATA RAID has the same problem. [opensuse] Ontological Relevance

We've argued about Akonadi/Nepomuk/Strigi a few times. I have friend who was loudly about "Ontological Systems" and claim that this represents one, but I have my doubts. I regularly kill off the akonadi process tree after booting. I'd like to 'zypper remove' it, but it seems to bound in to other things. But I use Thunderbird and Firefox and Lightening so the PIM side of it is no use to me. I use thunderbird via an IMAP link to my mail hub on a separate machine. I have no use for KDE PIM and don't foresee every having any. The closest use I can see is my directory of PDFs. I save interesting web pages as PDFs (firefox is nice about that) Right now I use mindmaps with short descriptions and links to navigate that. A Wiki might be nicer but I'd still want graphical support. But I have an ordered filing system and I remember where I put stuff! Its just that with so much of it the question arises: which has the most relevant content? I've seen many mention that Kfind (or find or grep-R) does a better job (though not for PDFs) and that is so for me for everything else. I've seen mention that the KDE development is drifting from user needs. I'm not sure it is; what I do and what I see in other parts of the system, is that things are getting too heavily linked. The architecture is bound rather than pluggable. Many packages drag in other packages that you don't want, aren't going to use, even when the low level code bindings aren't there. I realise that the semantic desktop is only a small part of KDE. I like the rest: plasma, the multitudes of improvements and new features made to the various individual applications. I like being able to show multiple folders on my desktop, and I like the changes to the widget framework. Is there no way I can decouple this? Why do I have to have all this stuff I'm not going to use? What has happened to my ability to pick and choose? The Atheros AR5BXB63 802.11 bg NIC networkcard of my Acer Laptop got defect and I was advised to buy a Sitecom Wireless-N USB Adapter WL-352 to solve the problem. For Windows 7 indeed it was solved, but for 11.4 I got 802.11 as interface choice but scanning for networks did not work. After a restart I got Atheros Communications Inc AR5001 Wireless Network Adapter as interface choice, but scanning resulted again in nothing. In Yast Hardware scanning it showed up as RTL8191S WLAN Adapter (wlan1). Any idea how to solve this Problem?
