[opensuse] SLES Gets New Respect from MS

I've been learning about Hyper-V support in Windows Server 2008, since I now use that as a desktop operating system at work, and I recently read a document from Microsoft that lists the *supported* guest operating systems. Of course, a virtual machine is a virtual machine, regardless of what OS runs on it, but I want to stress that this is from a list of officially *supported* operating systems. http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2008/en/us/hyperv-supported-guest-os.… They include: SLES 1.0 32-bit SP1 SLES 1.0 64-bit SP1 SLES 1.0 32-bit SP2 SLES 1.0 64-bit SP2 These are the ONLY non-Microsoft operating systems included in the list. Needless to say, I have an openSuSE 11.0 64-bit VM running just fine on my 2008 server, thank you. (How else am I gonna play mahjongg when I take a break from serious Windows software development?) :-) The whole idea behind server virtualization for commercial enterprises is to combine multiple low-load physical servers into low-load virtuals on a more fully utilized host server. [opensuse] Additional keys redux

I am using openSUSE 11 on Inspiron 600m laptop and my additional keys (volume control and lid close/open pseudobutton) stopped working. I think it happened when I installed KDE4 from one-click installer, but they don't work under both KDE3 and KDE4 now. I'll just clarify that before these buttons worked by default with no configuration on my side. What could have been broken during the installation and how do I fix it? [opensuse] Terrible performance on default ext3 writing with O_SYNC

We experience severe performance lacking while writing to file, opened with O_SYNC option. We understand that some performance degradation is normal in this mode, but on my system it is 200 (hundred !) times slower. For example on Debian linux, it is just 10-20 times slower on the same filesystem with the same mount options. [opensuse] vlc from packman repository - warning?

The packman community repository seems to have a vlc version higher than the "real" vlc repository, at least for suse 10.3. after testing it, most of the videos i used to play on vlc just don't any more, errors appear like "Vlc can not play xvid, no way to fix that" etc. going back to the older version does not help, now vlc seems fully broken. apparently the "uninstall" thru yast is behaving like a microsoft uninstall, no way to go back to the earlier version cleanly!!!! is it a bug or drm crippling? btw, it is a good thing that mplayer seems unaffected by this, so not much is lost..but i would like to get vlc back, very rarely there comes a file that vlc could play while mplayer can't. d. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe(a)opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help(a)opensuse.org

[opensuse] Firefox configuration issue on opensuse 11.0

Hi, I've asked this question on the mozillazine.org forum but haven't had any reply, so I wonder if it's an opensuse specific thing - something to do with the way firefox is packed on suse perhaps? Maybe someone on this list might have some ideas... I'm trying to get my mozilla.cfg file to work in Firefox 3 on a machine running opensuse 11.0 to lock some settings to specific values for all users. I had set up mozilla.cfg with proxy & homepage settings in Opensuse 10.3 with Firefox 2 and it works fine - all users have those settings set to the values I've specified and can't alter them. I really want to upgrade the machines to 11.0 to solve some other issues, but the firefox configuration files have been moved around to new places in 11.0 (and it's Firefox 3.0, though this same method works on other distros woth 3.0 according to http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=734275&start=0&st=0&sk=t&… but it doesn't seem to work for me on OpenSuse. Firstly, /usr/lib/firefox/greperfs doesn't exist on the new system! Instead, all.js is in /usr/lib64/xulrunner-1.9.0.1/greprefs/ (and there are other xulrunner dirs with other version numbers, but this is the only one with all.js). I've added the following to all.js: CODE: SELECT ALL pref("general.config.obscure_value", 13); pref("general.config.filename", "mozilla.cfg"); mozilla.cfg contains the following lines (with xxx replaced by the real domain name :) ): CODE: SELECT ALL // lockPref("network.proxy.autoconfig_url", "http://msgserver.xxx.com/proxy.pac"); lockPref("network.proxy.type", 2); lockPref("browser.startup.homepage", "http://msgserver.xxx.com/"); I've encoded that file using moz-byteshift.pl with an offset of 13 and made it executable for user, group & other. The firefox binary file is still in /usr/lib64/firefox, so put mozilla.cfg in there, I've also put it in /usr/lib64/xulrunner-1.9.0.1 as well. I know firefox is seeing the general.config line in all.js because when it's there, firefox gives the "Failed to read the configuration file" error and if I comment out that line, the error goes away & firefox starts. I also tried a plain text mozilla.cfg and changed the general.config.obscure_value to 0 in all.js, but I still get the configuration file error, firefox will not start. [opensuse] vmware server on openSuSE11, two problems..

Hi list, - oh dear... On my rather plain vanilla openSuSE11 (on a dual xeon 32bit/4G RAM) I try to install vmware server 1.0.7. Done that MANY times before - but then I ran into this when I invoke vmware-config.pl....: ---first problem----- Your kernel was built with "gcc" version "4.3.1", while you are trying to use "/usr/bin/gcc" version "4.3". This configuration is not recommended and VMware Server may crash if you'll continue. Please try to use exactly same compiler as one used for building your kernel. Do you want to go with compiler "/usr/bin/gcc" version "4.3" anyway? --- end of first problem --- I know what it means, but wait.. I thought I was under a plain vanilla SuSE. Obviously not. How to I remedy this situation? --- second problem --- The directory of kernel headers (version 2.6.25.11-0.1-pae) does not match your running kernel (version 2.6.25.9-0.2-pae). Even if the module were to compile successfully, it would not load into the running kernel. ---end of second problem --- No so it doesn't seem. But wait, I didn't touch the bl.... kernel. And I DID update (or so I thought) the kernel source and headers and all. It seems not, though... Any hints? This darn insistance on putting KDE4.x on the main distro till it is fully ready is suicide for suse there is a perfectly working KDE 3.5.x that should be the one on the main DVD untill KDE 4.x is fully ready to replace it (which it is not at the moment ) much to people disbelief on this list i do actually install a considerable number of Linux systems so do know from the users and installers side and KDE 4.x sucks pure and simple , It is no replacement for 3.5.9 as yet . I am about to start looking at a full home Multi media system for someone one server with multiple tv cards content streamed via Wifi or hard wired to dist round the house to upto 6 remote boxes , rest asured none of it will use KDE4.x it just is not ready whilst Kaffeine in 3.5.9 is solid if i go that way Pete . hello I would use my opensuse for register TV by TVcard I trayed the following command by schell streamer -t 0:60:00 -s 720x576 - pal -r 25 -o xfile.avi -f mjpeg -F mono8 i obtained corrupted avi files where the audio is not in frame with the video! I obtained same results also with mono16 and sterio options do you know a different way? All, I'm sure we've got some very knowledgeable perl-people here, so maybe you can sort this one out for me: I'm deleting all [:graph:] from a string using something like this: $txt =~ s/[[:graph:]]+//g; With the standard locale, [:graph:] is 0x21-0x7e. With locale = de_DE.iso8859-1 (or similar ones), [:graph:] should be 0x21-0x7E plus 0xA0-0xFF. I'm comparing to how isgraph() works in C, which should be the same. Well, with LC_CTYPE=de_DE.iso8859-1, the perl statement does NOT remove the characters 0x0A-0xFF.
