[opensuse] PDF File conversion

Hi, a couple of months ago I wrote about the large file sizes that I was getting when I converted a word .doc file to OO odt file, with the intention of later converting it to pdf. They were in the size of megabites. This is a bit of an ongoing saga for me, as this time I made up the newsletter for the organization using Open Office from the start, and then attempted to convert the odt file to pdf in linux. I ended up having to go back to windows in order to get the file sizes to a manageable size, the linux files were too large. Here is a rundown of what I did. 1. I made up the newsletter using Open Office. The final file size was 198kb. Not too bad, I thought that it was going to work out as I expected the file to be smaller yet when I converted that to a pdf file. 2. I converted the odt file to pdf. The resultant pdf file was 758.8kb. I am shooting for around 200kb, but will send a file up to 300kb. Any larger and it takes too long for the dialup users to download it. 3. I tried to play around with the pdf conversion process by reducing picture quality, and/or reducing the quality of the total pdf document. I produced two other pdf's this way, and believe it or not when I reduced the quality of the document to 50% it actually produced a larger file on my first attempt. That file was 789kb. The second attempt (30% quality) was 750 kb. I decided to save the newsletter odt file in doc format to see how large it would be, before I quit linux for Windows. It came out to 270kb. I was hoping to open it in word in winxp, and then convert it to pdf. But the formatting was so messed up it was easier to start over fresh in Word. But then, they tell me it isn't going to work right when try to save it as a doc file in open office. The new word file displaying the same information (plus an extra couple of pages of text that I forgot on the copy that I produced in OO) as the newsletter produced in odt came out to 220kb. 4. Those linux pdf files were too large to use, so I went back to WinXP and made up the file in Word (220kb). I then converted that to pdf, and got a file size of 270kb. That is useable, and I don't know of any way to make it smaller in Windows unless I start removing some pictures from the newsletter. As it stands now, I think that I will have to stick with windows for this task unless someone has a brainstorm and thinks of a way to make these linux pdf files smaller. I tried to install ATI ctcalyst driver VIA one click install, and it is not working. Log gives something like this: WW) warning, (EE) error, (NI) not implemented, (??) unknown. (EE) fglrx(0): atiddxDriScreenInit failed, GPS not been initialized. (EE) fglrx(0): XMM failed to open CMMQS connection. Hi, I am trying to have this web cam working. The uvcvideo driver is loaded, kopete, etc... see it, but I cannot get any picture out of it. Is any one went into this problem? Thanks. [opensuse] CanoScan LiDE 30 downscaling scans

Hello, for some reason I still don't know, my scanner isn't scanning at 1:1 scale It's an (old) CanoScan LiDE 30, configured by YaST under OpenSuSE 11.0 using the plustek driver. Both xsane and kooka recognize the device too but both applications fail to get the current document size... instead of 1:1 it might perfectly be 1:3 or 1:4 ... Any ideas?? [opensuse] openSUSE 11 and MythTV probs

I have finally updated my MythTV system to openSUSE 11.0. Everything is up and working but I have two issues that I cannot resolve. - First, I have my Hauppage DVB-T Nova-T USB stick configured and working. I can watch a TV channel, but when I press escape on the keyboard to return to the main MythTV menu, I get a segfault, and MythTV exits. I ran it from the terminal, and all it says is Segmentation Fault. Any tips on how to track this one down and resolve it? - Second is a problem I also had in openSUSE 10.3 on this hardware, but NOT with MythBuntu8.04 or Kubuntu 8.04. I experimented first with MythBuntu and Kubuntu before installing openSUSE. The problem is when I change TV channels. Sometimes it changes channels normally, but usually when the new DVB channel is locked, the display shows as if the vertical hold is gone on an old analog TV. The only way to recover is to exit the Watch TV part of MythTV and go back into Watch TV. Then the channel that had vertical hold issues is back to normal. With this exact same hardware, but booted to another Linux distribution, and using the same version of MythTV (built of course for that distribution), the problem doesn't appear... so it seems to be something openSUSE specific here. [opensuse] Lazy rsnapshot

Hi listmates, I'm having a problem getting rsnapshot to do anything (running openSUSE 10.3). It runs and all that, but it fails to actually copy something to the destination. From what I can tell, I have configured everything the correct way and the command "rsnapshot configtest" also mentions all syntax is okay, although it does complain about a missing Lchown. I have tried to find Lchown, but rpm tells me that no package provides Lchown. It's also not in the repositories, AFAICT. How do I recover a broken MD RAID-1.... Since there is no way to make a backup with easy restore? Can I upgrade a 10.0 to 11.0 by choosing the Installation ==> Upgrade option from the DVD? (I tried this by installing 10.0 under VMware but when booting from the DVD and attemting the install, it cannot see the virtual hard drive. I am running an older version 1.0.3 of VMware Server.) [opensuse] Printer Recommendation?

Hi Folks, After completing a rather arduous install* of 11.0 on a new HP m9340f desktop, I'm left with a printer issue. I purchased a nice Canon MX7600 multi-function printer knowing full well I'd probably have problems. I figured I'd at least be able to print to it, but no! This Canon is as proprietary as they come. This is ok, I'm able to use it via VirtualBox and Win-XP and the stand-alone fax and copier are valuable. So I'll keep the printer. But this leaves me still needing a printer I can use directly from 11.0 with cups. Can anyone recommend a fairly good color printer that will work well with cups? A network interface is also desirable. Thanks for any suggestions, Lew * footnote: My install problems were interesting indeed. First, I ran into the reiserfs freeze-up problem. I've made a few other 11.0 reiserfs installs without issue, but this one bit me in the nether regions. Must be something with the mobo or cpu (Core 2 quad) configuration. The install would finish, then freeze up after a variable amount of time. Then, the on-board NIC (Realtek) was unreliable. At times it wouldn't be seen by the install process, and when it did install it would spin off billions of RX overrun and some read errors. Readtek had an updated driver that I compiled in, but still no joy. This wasn't a SuSE problem, Knoppix showed the same symptoms.
