[opensuse] OpenOffice questions

I'm running OpenSuSE 10.2. I installed initially from the box DVD. Although I installed linux 64 it intalled OO 586. All the upgrades worked ok. Even I got one of the last ones with nice green gecko splahimage. The last upgrade broke the installation and I could not load OO. Then I saw a thread here and I went and I realized many of the necessary packages for OO were uninstalled. I reinstalled them and also this time I tried the 64 version of OO. Everything is working very well (build 2.3.0.1.2) Here the questions: 1. Why opensuse dvd install 586 initially when the OS version I was installing was 64? I assume it was not available at the time is that correct? 2. Will I miss anything using the 64 vs the 32 version of OO? 2. Why the green gecko image you see when you loaded is not there any more? Now is the boring blue one. I know those images are changed with new versions but the green gecko did not last very long. How can I get it back. [opensuse] Newbie problem - can only get 'It Works'

I installed apache2 on my Suse Linux 10.2 system. I wanted to make some changes to an existing perl script and test them out. I decided to check to be sure the script, which has been working, would work on my machine. All I can get is 'It Works!'. I edited the index.html script to invoke the script to test it but I just get the original it works. I have checked and the index.html at /srv/www/htdocs has the changes I made but it still seems to only show the old html. Where am I going wrong? Hi Nate, thanks for your reply. I also have a nVidia card both at home and at work with, apparently, the latest drivers... could it be the problem? Is this then related to OpenOffice or to nVidia?? The work around that has been working for me is, after the machine starts and I first log in, I launch one of the open office programs. It doesn't seem to matter which one. Then I go to any one of the menu items so that the menu appears. After that I leave it running, never quit. So far I have not had the machine freeze. The problem seems to effect systems with nvidia cards the most. I don't speak for SGI or Novell in this forum. [opensuse] OpenOffice 2.3 upgrade broke Thunderbird default "Open with"

I was running OO 2.0 (the default version) on my SUSE 10.0 system. In tracking down a problem with Master Documents, I upgraded to 2.3. Works nicely, but now when I click on an attachment in the Thunderbird mail program (say, .doc or .xls) the default is to Save, and selecting "Open with" produces the error: "filename.xls could not be opened, because the associated helper application does not exist. Change the association in your preferences." I can't find a place to change it, and besides .doc and .xls files (and I assume .ppt) automatically open just fine from the desktop. Just not from within Thunderbird. Curiously, I seem to recall both .doc files and .xls files opening correctly before the upgrade, but only .doc files are mentioned in the Download Actions preference dialog. Fiddling there seems like a kludge, anyway, since it was working before without that. Any suggestions as to how to address the above? TIA, ds -- Dennis E. [opensuse] USB problems with Suse 10.2

Got a new 2GB memory stick and found out that on my system the stick is sometimes automatically recognized as /dev/sda1 but if I want to work with it it tells me it does not exist. Mounting /dev/sda1 gives the same information. Can somebody tell me how to force this USB stick to work on my computer. Other USB products like a cardreader and a smaller USB stick (which I do not have at hand at the moment) are working properly. [opensuse] Reading Media Description Failed Error while doing network installation

Hi, I'm trying to do network installation of SLES9SP3. When I boot the image it throwing error that " Reading Media Description Failed. Cannot read media description for /SLES9-SP3/CD1/ Packages from this media cannot be installed." I tried to copy the iso & remount it again still the problem persists. Can any of you kindly help me in resolving the issue. What actually the error means? I'm sure that it can able to the the files in the installation source but I suspect it can't able to read the files. Hi, I'm trying to use DRBD 0.8 in Opensuse 10.3. I used yast to configure it (a basic conf) but when i try to run the init scritp it faills with errors in the config file. I was using drbd before in other distros like Centos and redhat without problems. [opensuse] Suggestion for personal log categories?

Hello, First of all I want to thank you for all the suggestion about tool for managing personal log. All of those suggestions look very interesting. So far they are (in no particular order): - basket http://basket.kde.org/ - kjots, gjots - elog http://midas.psi.ch/elog - zim - tuxcards I'm overwhelmed by all of those choices :) I guess I'll spend my weekend evaluating them. On further thought, can someone suggesting what is the best way to categorize our personal log? Currently using Kate, I just throw in all of them in one file with the only mark on them is date and title. To explain clearer how difficult it is for me to arrange the categories is that I'm working on multiple distro: ubuntu, rhel, fedora, centos, sles/d, opensuse. And also some major continuous projects such as samba, zimbra, linux-ha. For example, regarding keeping part of log files, should I put it into the respective distros/projects, or should I put log files in it's own categories whose sub categories of various distros/projects. Example 1: 1. Distros 1a. Centos 1a1. Log files 1b. Ubuntu 1b1. Log files ..... Or: Example 2: 1. Distros 2. Log files 2a. Centos 2b. Ubuntu ..... I'm sorry if this things look silly. I just hope that I can learn from others, and hopefully soon I can share it to others too. Based on the screenshots, I think I have several categories already: 1. Un-categorized :) 2. Credentials (for any username and passwords) 3.
