Can Yast install from local directories

Would like to use Yast to install rpm´s I downloaded. Until SuSE 10.0 I could specify local directories to be searched by Yast. However, when I try to do this under 10.1 (Software -> Installation Source) and then specify my download-directory, Yast complains that it does not find a catalogue. Does this mean one cannot use Yast anymore to install its own non-SuSE rpm´s? Thanks -- Julien Michielsen julien(a)michkloo.xs4all.nl

Hosed root dir

While experimenting with editing video with Kino on 9.3, I moved some files and the machine froze. A reboot halted at the GRUB announcement. Rebooting into Installation -> Rescue Installed System said sda2 (root dir) and sda7 (a data dir) were corrupt, and suggested repairs, which I accepted. It also said that sda10 (another data dir) had an unknown filesystem on it. All dirs on the disk use Reiserfs. However, the app then hung at the stage where it attempts to mount fstab dirs. Accessing the system via Rescue System from the CD allowed me to mount all dirs except sda2 and sda10, and the data on them *appears* to be OK and accessible. Reiserfsck --check /dev/sda2 just gives up and says there must be bad blocks on the disk. At the minute the most likely option seems to be a reinstall on sda2 (assuming that the disk isn't totally kaputt), but that will lose my email and a couple of files I'd like to keep, including a small db I forgot to back up. Is there any option other than this nuclear one? Hoping someone can help ... Kevin Donnelly

Recommend 100baseFX NIC?

Hi: I have Suse 9.1, with kernel 2.6.5-7.95. Current NIC is (from dmesg) 3c59x: Donald Becker and others. www.scyld.com/network/vortex.html 0000:00:0e.0: 3Com PCI 3c905B-FX Cyclone 100baseFx at 0xb000. Vers LK1.1.19 0000:00:0e.0: Media override to transceiver type 5 (100baseFX). I had to add an option to get it to work with the fibers. I think we have SC connectors. I am having other problems, and would like to try a different NIC. Any good recommendations for a SC connector 100baseFX NIC? You would use an OS that's been in release for two weeks in a production environment? While I agree that it's nice to have the latest and greatest, the desire for stability generally suggests that a "waiting period" is a Good Thing. That holds whether you're talking about SuSE, SuSE-OSS, SLES, Windows Server, etc etc etc. Once the software is in release, stick it on a test system, see how it works...if it doesn't work, then back-burner it until the problems are fixed, and then test again. Wash, rinse, repeat :-) (An example: I've got Windows running on most corporate desktops, because of a particular piece of software that our vendor only provides for Win32. We've started talking about looking into Windows Vista -- in late 2007/early 2008, when it will have been out for a year or so. And we run SuSE 9.3 as our production OS, having been burned by a too-early jump to SuSE 9.0 and the problems that resulted from the "upgrade" to 9.1.) I agree with the general sentiment, that adding in the ZENWorks updater to this release was a mistake. As a Systems guy, if my programmers tried to dump a feature like that into a release as late in the product cycle as this was added, I'd throw a bit of a temper tantrum. And I think someone from Novell/SuSE's project management group should go back and look at the decision process that lead to its inclusion. But if the complaint is that you can't just take a brand-new release and dump it into a production environment, well...maybe it's time to get a _bit_ more conservative with your own release cycle :-) -- there's always going to be a bug in there somewhere... - Ian

openSUSE Status Meeting 2006/05/30

This meeting is meant to discuss the latest developments in and around openSUSE. It was held on Tuesday 2006/05/30 18:00 CEST (16:00 GMT) Minutes: Status SUSE Linux 10.1 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Andreas answered the questions posted in the Q/A section. Some were about the package management and Andreas asured everybody that the issues [1] are beeing worked on. A test repository is already available and after fixing one more bug it will be released as online update. Delta-RPMs are currently not supported but once this is fixed we will have another update to the package management stack. Then there was a question if the current update that is in the pipe contained performance enhancements for zmd. Andreas said that there are a couple of fixes that lead to enhanced performance but that poerformance in general is another thing that has to be worked on next. It was agreeed upon that we need to continue the discussion on opensuse-factory about the stack. The other round of questions was about future developments in SUSE Linux 10.2. First if the current design of having 2 rather independend ways of handling packages (yast/libzypp and zmd/libzypp [2]) be kept of if there are attempts to merge those two together. Andreas said that this is currently one of the topics we discuss on opensuse-factory and that he didnt knew what was the result yet. Also the question was asked how we plan to tackle windows vista which will be roughly released at the same time as SUSE Linux 10.2. Andreas said that he sees that the GNOME and KDE communitys and of course the openSUSE people that participate in them are the teams that continue the work on this. Now with 10.1 we need to take a step back and see whether the changes we did are beneficial to the users and how to continue from there. During this someone asked when we can expect GNOME 2.14.x for stable releases like 10.1. jpr said that we definately 2.16.x for 10.2 and that we'll probably put 2.15.x in to factory sometime around the end of june and follow the unstable tree from then on. Adrian and Andreas said that the GNOME team is already working on providing the newest packages in the build service. The next question was about XGL and KDE integration in 10.2. Beineri confirmed that there were no concrete plans for anything 10.2 related yet in that direction but that the KDE community is probably already working on that. mmj raised the question if there are any developments in running compiz as standalone windowmanager. jpr explained the plugin system of compiz then. cb400f asekd if somebody's feelings would be hurt if a wikipage was set up about issues in 10.1. Everybody agreed that we need to be very open about the issues and learn from them. Marcus pointed out that there already is such a page (Bugs:Most_Annoying_Bugs [3]) and cb400f said that he will expand that. The status LiveDVD was discussed and Andreas said that we are working on it but that he didnt knew an ETA yet. Interessting projects which get build there currently are * KDE:KDE3 (contains already 3.5.3) * KDE:Backports (contains updated KDE apps without the need to update also the complete KDE (big advantage)) * OSCAR cluster software * groupware software (Kolab, OX, eGroupWare) * Apache + php * Kernel Supplementarry dirs for KDE and misc got removed on ftp.suse.com already. Gnome will follow. "Daily" updates get logged on the build service news page [1] from today on. INIT: No inittab file found

Hi all, I am really very surprized but at booting my Linux says "INIT: No inittab file found" and suggests me to choose a runlevel. I choosed runlevel s, and after a checking there is really no inittab file in my /etc/ folder. I haven't done anything "illegal", just was playing with the initscripts and everything was fine, and for sure it is immpossible that I have removed it by mistake. Any suggestions? /proc/kcore eating up space in my root FS

I am badly running out of space in my root FS ,and after running a find for files greater >100M i found a single culprit .../proc/kcore..is there anyway to rid myself of this file ?? new at wireless configuration

Hi all, I am afraid I am a bit of a mess trying to install a wireless device in my plain old Toshiba S1900-203 running Open SuSE 10.1. I've installed the OS from the scratch through Internet. Both a Linksys #[WPC54G v2] and a Conceptronic Wireless 54Mbps USB 2.0 adapter were connected to the PC during installation. None of them was detected by the installation process, thus I'm connected to the net with the onboard ethernet card that is running fine. lspci -n lists the card with an pciID 104c:9066 that I can easily find at http://ndiswrapper.sourceforge.net/mediawiki/index.php/List. Nothing about the USB device so I'm guessing some kind of controller must be installed prior to being able to see it. I've installed ndiswrapper related packages from the online source. ndiswrapper lists No driver installed what I'm guessing is a regular situation as far as I've installed nothing but the ndiswrapper packages. Before going ahead and trying to install Windows drivers for the Linksys card I would like to understand the iwconfig output: -- Last login: Tue May 30 13:53:31 2006 Have a lot of fun... citlali:~ # iwconfig lo no wireless extensions. eth0 no wireless extensions. sit0 no wireless extensions. citlali:~ # -- As far as I can understand, lo and eth0 are the local loopback and the onboard ethernet interface. Please, 1. what sit0 does stand for? 2. is this what is expected to get from a iwconfig considering no wireless driver is loaded 3. what do I need to install/use the Conceptronic USB Wireless adapter?
