The fact that it is open source is no excuse for releasing a final version with so many vital bugs unresolved. We could have waited for a stable and reliable release instead. Sincerely making constructive criticism, Metricus On Tuesday 30 May 2006 14:56, Mike Dzikowski wrote:

Okey let's close this topic now. SUSE Linux 10.1 did not become the great version we expected/hoped at release-time. It was a mistake to implement the new management when beta3 was allready out. We have learned from it and it will not happen again. At this moment the SUSE-team is working hard on it and we hope it will be fixed soon. This is not good for the reputation of SUSE Linux, but we have to understand the following: Mistakes can happen, it's how you deal with it. At this point we just have to say: Okey, 10.1 was not the BEST when it was released let's compensate it with 10.2. That task is not only for the SUSE-team, but for the whole community. I hope you're not part of the SuSE team, because I paid for 10.1, and I'm not willing have its shortcomings shrugged off as a lesson in how not to do things. I expect it to be made right, and I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one.

I guess I can speak for 99% of the people on this mailinglist when I say that.

We expected it an it did not came out the way we wanted. While testing it looks like the problems where solved. Problematic part was that there were no big repos and update repos yet. Now that everybody uses at least 4 if them it shows up that the system still fails. If we did know that the problems were so big then it was not released. I feel sorry for all those who paid money and are disappointed. We as community reported that the problem was enough fixed for an release and we all made a mistake with that. WE ARE SORRY.

You must be manic depressive, Randall. Get help. The mood swings are quite apparent. You "turned" acerbic/sarcastic/unreasonable/mean on me ONCE and you know it. Stay away from the keyboard when you feel like this. Seriously, get treatment. Carl

So let me tell you, I'm very happy with SUSE Linux 10.1. The package management isn't what it should be, but the rest works fine her. On my notebook 10.1 is the first SUSE, where realy everything works like it should including 3D Support with the free r300 driver, full acpi support (including the acpi buttons, I was long fighting for at Bug 61106).
It was a mistake to implement the new management when beta3 was allready out. We have learned from it and it will not happen again. At this moment the SUSE-team is working hard on it and we hope it will be fixed soon.
Right, it was a mistake, but when this will be fixed (and I think the SUSE-team will fix it in near future), I can say for myselve, SUSE Linux 10.1 is the best SUSE I ever had. -- Machs gut | http://www.iivs.de/schwinde/buerger/tremmel/ | http://packman.links2linux.de/ Manfred | http://www.knightsoft-net.de

Full ACK. The NetworkManager is just sensational (just adding some effort to the VPN section and this tool will become perfect). The only problem I ran into were the graphical tools of the package management. If I use them, the zmd process will crash. Then I did the following: - Kill all zmd processes - Delete /var/lib/zypp/cache/* - rczmd start - rug sd all (<- actually you have to delete each on its own) - rug sa --type yum <your-mirror> sl-10.1 - rug sa --type yum <your-mirror> sl-10.1-non-oss - rug sa --type yum <packman-mirror> packman - rug sa --type yum <suser-guru-mirror> suser-guru - rug sa --type yum <update-mirror> sl-10.1-updates - rug sub -a Afterwards, everything worked as long as I do not use any graphical mono tool. Even installing packages with YaST works. If the updater shows the exclamation mark, I use "rug update" to update the system. Only problem with rug: It's extremly slow. Installing a small package takes about 3-4 minutes. Installing is actually not slow but preparing and finishing is. BTW, I updated from 10.0 to 10.1 using YaST with all repos mentioned.
