Had to give up on 10.1 (Retail)

I've installed 10.1 on a lab rat machine and it went ok. The few glitches I've mentioned under 'General comments about 10.1". I also installed it on an IBM Thinkpad X30 and it also went ok with the same glitches. So having 'proofed' it so to speak, I attempted to install it on my main machine which is pretty stock.... an Intel board running a 2.8ghz Pentium, and an ATE Radeon card... the same as the lab rat machine. It also has a Viewsonic LCD monitor which the lab rat didn't. The lab rat has a Viewsonic CRT monitor. In any event, I cannot for the life of me get 10.1 to work with the LCD monitor even though it worked under 10.0. At this point, every time I try to use SAX2 to do any configuring, (even using the -l option) it screws up the monitor and then it is hard reset time. The monitor wants to run at 1600x1200 at about 75hz but even bringing over the xorg.conf from 10.0 didn't make things work. (I'm using 10.0 to write this) Even the install had to be interrupted because when I went to 'test configuration', it screwed up the monitor and it was hard reset time again. NOTE: one thing I discovered in all this is that when SAX2 displays the current settings.... it shows (for me) VIEWSONIC VP201B which is correct. But it doesn't tell you that behind the scenes, it has no definitions for a VP201B. Maybe a VP201MB but it doesn't tell you that it DOESN"T KNOW SQUAT about your monitor. It just reports the correct monitor as obtained from the monitor itself and leads you to believe that it knows what it is doing. <NOT> So at this point 10.1 is going in the trash as my main system. Too many problems. I remember throwing 8.1 in the trash too so maybe it's just the even-numbered DOT 1 systems that are no good. If so, I can live with that. <PLONK>

install into directory segfault on 10.1

Hello, I am attempting to do an "install into directory" to the /tmp/suse directory on SuSE 10.1 final and yast is segfaulting. It is interesting that in this case, it references /mnt/tmp/proc and /mnt/tmp/sys because I was trying to install into the /mnt/tmp/ directory previously. I am using the Xen kernel and lvm. Command: /sbin/yast2 dirinstall & /bin/df: `/mnt/tmp/proc': No such file or directory /bin/df: `/mnt/tmp/sys': No such file or directory /bin/df: `/mnt/tmp/proc': No such file or directory /bin/df: `/mnt/tmp/sys': No such file or directory /bin/df: `/mnt/tmp/proc': No such file or directory /bin/df: `/mnt/tmp/sys': No such file or directory /bin/df: `/mnt/tmp/proc': No such file or directory /bin/df: `/mnt/tmp/sys': No such file or directory Segmentation fault at /usr/share/YaST2/clients/inst_rpmcopy.ycp:75 /sbin/yast2: line 233: 25203 Segmentation fault $ybindir/y2base $module "$@" qt "$Y2_GEOMETRY" $Y2QT_ARGS I have tried this numerous times to different directories with the same results. opensuse 10.1, sound card is working but no sound with KsCD and other appl.

Hi, I am a linux newbee. Have just installed opensuse 10.1 on a Lattitude X1. Installation went fine. Almost all hardware components were recognised and drivers installed. However, I have problems playing mp3 or music CDs. I tested the sound card within yast (yast->hardware->sound->Other->volume->test) and there is a test sound. However if I want to play a music CD using KsCD or Kaffeine no sound is generated. I have thoroughly checked the KMix options and all settings seem to be appropriate. I do hope that this is only a question of a check box I have forgotten to tick. However, If more tech details are required to solve the problem, what I do not hope I of course can send them. Any suggestions please Eryk

The first message I got was, "Transaction failed: Package Transaction failed: You do not have the required access level (superuser) for this method. I thought, hey, shouldn't the system just ask for the root password? I went ahead and added myself as a Privilaged User in spite of my reservations. I really don't like this concept, since the whole point of me using Linux was that I'd run as a non-privilaged user and be prompted for a password whenever I want to do an update - YOU or otherwise. A dialog popped up asking for my passwrod for (root) privilage. The command was rug (?) Command: rug ua --replace kai view install upgrade remove subscribe refresh Rug? I'm assuming this is some Zenworks command. I did a man:rug and found it is "the command-line interface to ZENworks Linux Mangagement (ZLM) agent." Well, after running the process and watching the (GNOME) screen do stuff it errored. (I think Software Updater is written in C#.) I got the message, "Transaction failed: Package transaction failed: You do not have the required access level (superuser) for this method." Hello? Did I not put in the root password previously? Well, after a reboot (which I almost always do after installing) the icon shows no more updates necessary. So - I guess it worked? Who knows. Wierd. Can I just go back to YOU? 'Smart' package over-elaboration

Been using 'smart' for a while on SuSE 10.0. Lately, ever *more* repositories (e.g., as mirrors) are being added to /etc/smart/channels whenever I upgrade 'smart' itself. I have problems with that: - "kde-supplementary" was automatically added as a new channel. But I did not choose 'kde' when I first built my 10.0 system. WHY put in an useless-to-me channel ? - I have a SLOW dial-up line. When a package is added to the "security" repositories, my system has to fetch the latest index from all the mirrors now specified for the "security" channel. Slows completion of 'smart update' by a LOT. - Today 'smart update' had trouble accessing a repository in Belgium. That caused smart to produce an error message, and wait for my acknowledgment. I normally walk away and do other things while 'update' runs. But this time, when I came back, 'update' still had lots to do after I had intervened. With 'apt-get update' I can put in the '-m' flag and depend on it not "hanging part-way". Bottom line: KEEP YOUR HANDS OFF my /etc/smart/channels directory. mikus

yast in others langauges

I need sometimes to start the Graphical version of yast (to know the options name, make screenshots...) in other langages. Usually, to do such things I open an xterm, change LANG and launch the program however, when I do this with yast, I have only the ncurse ui of yast. can somebody explain me how gmane works. I subscribed to this list trhough gmane (in addition to the direct subscription). The first time I answered I was asked to confirm the mail, what I did, and got an answer: you are welcome to post. the next mails I send are accepted without notice. but I don't see them on the list. also in my news reader (mozilla) I have no archive. The option "all" and the option "unread" gives the same result. if so the news are unsusefull... did I miss something?
