Hi, I recognized recently that while running dhcp-client, it sends out quite precisely e.g. the version of the kernel I use. I visualized it via displaying the respective line of any of the "/var/lib/dhcpcd/*.info" files: CLASSID='Linux 2.6.5-7.252-default i686' , but I'm sure that something like ethereal would also find it. So I attempted to change this, simply by setting in the file "/etc/sysconfig/network/dhcp" this string as it is shortly documented in that file: DHCLIENT_VENDOR_CLASS_ID="Linux 2.6.x i586" After that my client didn't run anymore and in fact have no idea, which kind of error I could make there. Please would you give me an advice, how to further modify that string that my client should send out this one?! I also tried the same separated by commas, use a single word there, etc. Thanks a lot, Pelibali

bind9 unable to update slave server

I am running bind 9.3.1 on SuSE Open 10 and bind 9.3.2 on SuSE 10.1, as master and slave servers respectively. The problem I'm having is that the slave server will get the zone from the master and then bomb out when trying to rename it to the zone file needed on the slave server. The syslog messages look like this: transfer of 'test.com/IN' from 172.30.1.50#53": connected using 172.30.1.51:40269 dumping master file: rename: slave/bak.test.com: permission denied The daemon runs in a chroot jail in /var/lib/named, the directory that holds the zone files, /var/lib/named/slave is owned by the user named that bind runs as. Each time bind tries to get a copy of the zone from the master it creates a file "tmp-[unique string] in the slave directory but never creates the zone file. I have looked at these files and they contain the zone information complete from the master server. I have tried creating the zone file first and then starting the slave server so it could update and existing file. When I try this the permission denied errors go away, but the zone file I have created does not get updated. I have turned on notify on the master server to make sure the slave was notified of the changes so it could get the updated file, but to no avail. I have searched far and wide on the web for anything close to this type of error and have found nothing. The closest I have come are errors about permissions in the chroot jail not being assigned to the proper user. I have checked this several times and because the named user can, and does, create the "tmp-" files, this is not the problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Apache problem

On my SLES 8 server, I installed a bunch of patches and updates. Now Apache won't start. When I try to manually start apache, it gripes about entries in the httpd.conf file saying the entry is not supported, or is dependent on a module that is not installed. All of the entries in question are part of the mod_autoindex module, so the problem seems to lie there. The module is listed as an installed dependency, but something must be wrong with it. What now?

UNDELIVERED MAIL problem

For the past 2 days I have been receiving msgs from Mailer-Daemon @flpv18.prodigy.net advising me that my msgs addressed to aa6vn(a)pacbell.net are undeliverable because they involved "too many hops". All my msgs (there have been 7 'returns') are those I posted to THIS (SuSE Help) forum either as a first posting (DMA Nightmare ....) or responses to that thread, or responses in the threads "DMR-backup/restore to be added to yast+recovery" and "Update-o-matic". I do not know a 'aa6vn(a)pacbell.net" and have never addressed any mail to that address. All the msgs which I have posted to this forum have been correctly received in this forum (SuSE Help) -- but they are also returned to me by the above Mailer-Daemon as undeliverable. My conclusion is that it is something at this forum's (SuSE Help) mailer's end which is causing the messages to be forwarded to this mysterious pacbell.net address. My posts to other people/forums do not suffer this problem. Is anybody else having mail posted to this forum returned to them? And if so where are they being sent to be then returned? I don't remember wether he posted anything in the newsgroup, or it was just published in a magazine. Randall Schwarts has a bookmark checker (in perl, if I remember correctly), but I be d@@@ed if I can remember which magazine and issue. I am getting ready to swap around a bunch of machines, and I want to try it on there bookmarks, so I can knock some down/out. Installing and configuring SUSE 10.1

I installed and configured SUSE 10.1 (x86_64 version) from the retail DVD. I basically upgraded the existing SUSE 9.3 Pro x86_64 installation to 10.1. Perhaps the problems detailed below are due to the upgrade (as opposed to installing SUSE 10.1 from scratch). Overall, SUSE 10.1 at the moment (and this could change) feels like a step back on my machine. This is not surprising since SUSE 9.3 Pro was very close to perfect. Hardware: ASUS A8V Deluxe (Socket 939) with onboard Marvel gigabit card. onboard Realtek sound, AMD 3000+ CPU, 1GB DDR 3200 RAM, 200GB ATA drive, nVidia Quadro 2 Pro (ELSA GLoria III) videocard, Samsung 172T 17" LCD, Soundblaster Live! soundcard. During hardware detection, the Soundblaster card was not detected in Yast and this led to subsequent problems. Other than that, installation via the upgrade route was smooth except when it came to registration. The registration process got stuck in a weird loop and I had to kill the browser by logging into a virtual console. After logging in, I tried to set up the Soundblaster soundcard. Yast did not detect it though despite the fact that it shows up when I do lspci -v (file attached). I noticed that Yast no longer gives you the option of downloading the Microsoft fonts and the nVidia drivers. Since I have an older "legacy" nVidia card, I downloaded the 7174 x86_64 version of the driver (which is the correct one as per nVidia's website) and tried to compile it. No dice since the compilation exits with numerous errors. Looks like I'm stuck with the nv driver. I couldn't find synaptic (apt gui) but found smart instead. Looks like smart will eventually (if it is not abandoned half way through like synaptic) be pretty good. Abandoning reasonably functioning software is a disturbing trend in linux with apt/synaptic being a good example of that trend. kaffeine, MPlayer and totem all behave strangely, segfaulting all over the place despite libdvdread, libdvdcss being installed. libdvdread throws up numerous errors. Hopefully, these will start working eventually. In comparison, the videocard with 7174 x86_64 nvidia driver and the SB Live! soundcard driver installed correctly in SUSE 9.3 Pro. Most multimedia software (kaffeine, MPlayer etc.) also worked reasonably well. Anand
