Hi. On suse 10.1 box here I have installed smart. Sometimes I get this when I want to upgrade to a newer version: # smart upgrade mozilla Loading cache... Updating cache... ###################################################################################### [100%] Computing transaction... That last until I kill the process What is it ?. And what to do here ?: smart upgrade konqueror Loading cache... Updating cache... ###################################################################################### [100%] error: 'konqueror' matches no packages. Suggestions: error: kdebase3-3.5.2-9@i586 So far, I haven't seen any packages getting updated this way. /Erik

Xgl+fglrx+gdm trouble

I've just updated to SuSE 10.1 and is quite happy about the new version (well, if the new package manager system is disregarded). I tested out Xgl with Compiz which I found to be quite useful (and a jawdropper :D) so I decided to make the installation permanent. In order to get it to work on my Thinkpad T43p I changed from kdm into gdm and adjusted /etc/opt/gnome/gdm/gdm.conf so that: 1=Standard command=/usr/X11R6/bin/Xgl -audit 0 -br The first line was to avoid a bug in the ATI driver. This works except that gdm _always_ hangs on the login prompt unless i run "sax2 -r -m 0=fglrx" prior to starting xdm/gdm. Networked, duplexing, colour laser printer

Dear everyone, I'm looking for a duplexing colour laser printer that I can put onto our small home network, either wired or wireless. If possible I'd prefer something where the toner cartridges aren't extortionatelly priced, but that might be too much to ask. I've been looking at something like the Epson Aculaser C1100N. I've looked at /www.linuxprinting.org/ and checked the general level of linux compatibility and Epson look like a good bet. I'd appreciate hearing peoples' experiences with linux and colour laser printers. Any recommendations? Anything to avoid? Thank you for any advice. 'ö-Dzin

YaST, YUM, RUG, APT, SYNAPTIC, SMART, etc. What's wrong with this picture? OK. Perhaps I'm getting old. And do not get me wrong. I like choice. But are so many different tools really needed? Is there a good description of what each tool does that makes it unique from the others? I think I would find a feature matrix most welcome. Which does and does not do what? Which platform does it run on? What resources will it use and not use? That sort of thing. Something for the opensuse site? -- Roger Oberholtzer

Hi, Thanks for the precise answer. However, there are a few more problems. >rug in divx Resolving Dependencies... ERROR: Dependency resolution failed: Resolver Failed Also, after adding the service the updater suggest to update a lot of packages. I assume that packman has a newer versions of these. However, an attempt to run the update produces the same error as above. Furthermore, I have observed that after running "rug ref" in the zen-installer search for divx lists the package divx, divx4linux twice. An further run or "rug ref" results that any package is listed in the search results 3 or four times. How do I recreat the consistency of the database? LVM and pvextend question

I am fairly new to LVM and am trying to figure out how to let the OS recognize an extended LV partition once it's been resized. For example: (none):/boot # df -h Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on <snip> /dev/mapper/system-tmp 1.0G 33M 992M 4% /tmp (none):/boot # lvextend /dev/system/tmp -L +1GB Extending logical volume tmp to 2.00 GB Logical volume tmp successfully resized (none):/boot # df -h Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on <snip> /dev/mapper/system-tmp 1.0G 33M 992M 4% /tmp The system still sees it as 1GB. I've tried unmounting/mounting, rebooting, and searching the system and google for the magical command I'm looking for. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated along with any advice if you think I'm going about the resize incorrectly/stupidly. Thanks! Hi, I was trying to play uncompressed and divx encoded avi files with Kaffeine, Noatun, Totem, all of them are opening the file and playing but ONLY the SOUND. Suse 10.1 on an Latitude X1 laptop with an Intel 915 GM graphic controller. Suggestions? Eryk

Yast Software Management Issues

Hi all, I've installed OpenSuse 10.1 on Dell Poweredge 650 with 1G RAM, 73G Ultra SCSI HD, when accesing Yast -> Software -> Software Management, the Process Take about 20 minutes at "Reading package information". Any ideas? Thanks

Annoying over-eager OpenOffice in 10.1

I just upgraded my laptop to openSuSE 10.1 (from the x86_64 non-oss DVD). Looks very nice. But, it seems that my OpenOffice is very eager and jealous. It insist that I only use it and nothing else. I run the GNOME desktop environement and when I open a document with OpenOffice, it follows me around when I focus on a different desktop. When I minimise it, it just pops up again after a second or two. It is extermely annoying. THe only way to use a different app is to close OpenOffice. Anybody seen this behaviour before? Could this be GNOME-related? I googled, but I did not find anything. I also looked through the OpenOffice settings, but did not find anything.
