Yast Software Management Issues
Hi all, I've installed OpenSuse 10.1 on Dell Poweredge 650 with 1G RAM, 73G Ultra SCSI HD, when accesing Yast -> Software -> Software Management, the Process Take about 20 minutes at "Reading package information". Any ideas? Thanks

Known problem. It's related to Zen and rug... You can remove these services and use yast2 online update or yum manually. /etc/init.d/novell-zmd stop rpm -e zmd rug zen-updater Anders.

So, this is what should be done? I finally figured out with the diary's help not to use the old YaST way of doing things since this new Zen and rug method, got lots of signature errors in YaST2. Finally, after reading the article in the diary, the Packman sources loaded fine using Add Service, but none of the others do :( I even tried from the command line for Guru: columbus:/home/robert # rug sa --type=YUM http://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/misc/suser-guru/rpm/10.1 Guru Adding YUM service http://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/misc/suser-guru/rpm/10.1... 0% ERROR: Could not add 'http://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/misc/suser-guru/rpm/10.1': Download failed: (http://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/misc/suser-guru/rpm/10.1/repodata/repomd.xml) The remote server returned an error: (404) Not Found. So, should I uninstall this new package for software management as Anders has suggested...or can someone tell me what I can do to get the external sources loaded in SuSE 10.1 using the new packages? Thanks in advance! -- Robert

Anders.
I just upgraded to 10.1 yesterday and, as part of the installation process, it went to the update process at the very end and picked up a couple of package updates. As far as I know, I'm now current. My question is, if, when I get notified of new packages being available, can I just ignore the Software Updater and go directly to YOU and avoid any problems, or is the fact that zen and rug are installed going to cause me problems anyway? In other words, is it safe to leave these packages on my system, or should I uninstall them to avoid problems when updates next become available? Greg Wallace

Wrong. YaST does not communicate directly with rug and only communicates with ZMD if you either add or remove an installation source, which is not the case here.

Wow, hold on... I cannot believe you are seriously suggesting he removes some of the default package management utilities/services? Even if his problem was related to these utilities/services ( which i doubt very much since Software Management module does not use these ) you shouldn't just advise someone to remove them and use something else. Crazy suggestion, totally crazy... :( Since we don't have a lot of information regarding the problem other than an estimated time of 20 minutes opening the software management module we don't have much to go on and AJ has suggested he opens a bug and supplies his logs. It may be something else but experience tells me refreshing meta data from a large repo ( the main inst-sources for example ) over a slow connection or from a slow mirror exhibits the very same symptons refreshing package information using the software management yast module. Errrrrrrrrrr why not if it dont work wich it painfully dont then scrap it fast ... no point in wasting time energy resources on something so painfully at error .. Is this a new install? Please open a bugreport at bugzilla.novell.com and add the YaST log files, Andreas -- Andreas Jaeger, aj@suse.de, http://www.suse.de/~aj/ SUSE LINUX Products GmbH, Maxfeldstr. 5, 90409 Nürnberg, Germany GPG fingerprint = 93A3 365E CE47 B889 DF7F FED1 389A 563C C272 A126
