[SLE] HELP - 536EP modem driver?

Hi. Third time I've posted this. I've installed Open Source SuSe 10, and it doesn't seem to come with a driver for my Intel 536EP modem, which WAS working fine before I upgraded from SuSe 9.2, & all I can find online are drivers for earlier versions. Stage 1 has to be written to the MBR. Try the following. 1) Boot Linux from the CD. 2) In a shell, enter grub 3) at the prompt, enter -- find /boot/grub/stage1 This should tell you where stage 1 is targeted to be installed (something like (hd0,1). Your /boot/grub/device.map will tell you what hd the hdn in this message is referring to; i. e., hda, hdb, etc.). If nothing has changed since you upgraded to 10, it should still be the hard drive of the Windows machine (that's the boot drive on your computer, based on what you have said). 4) Then do root (hdn1,n2) <- n1 and n2 are the numbers that came out of the above find command; i. e., just enter that same string in the root command 5) Finally, do setup (hdn1) <- n1 being the number following the hd in the above statetments. This setup command causes the stage1 located in /boot/grub on your machine to be written to the mbr. For My system, the above process looks like this -- grub find /boot/grub/stage1 -> It comes back (hd0,1) root (hd0,1) setup (hd0) I'm sure all of this can be accomplished from the graphical interface, but I never made the switch, as I have gotten used to using this method over the years. I have had to go through this every time I upgrade my system since about 9.1 (I wish to hell I knew why!). For some reason, I never get a clean MBR written when I upgrade. Every time, after I upgrade, I try to do some more tweaking in the grub files hoping it will work right for the next upgrade (it never does). I did some more tweaking since installing 10.0, so I'm hoping I won't have that problem this next time (but I'd bet money I will!). Good luck. Greg Wallace Thanks! Need to know how to mount subfs defined floppy as reg user

I know this has been discussed on this list before, but I didn't realize it applied to me, but it does. If I try to mount a floppy as a regular user I get the message -- "only root can mount /dev/fd0 on /media/floppy" I hadn't tried accessing a floppy as a regular user before and didn't realize this limitation was there. /dev/fd0 is set up as type subfs in fstab. I assume that if I made that auto instead I could get this to work, but I'd like to try to leave it subfs and work within that framework, if possible. Can someone tell me how to accomplish this? I would hope there would be an option I could simply put on that fstab line to allow regular users to mount a floppy, but fear I will have to go into some subfs XML file and make code changes to accomplish this (hope I'm wrong). Any help greatly appreciated. Greg Wallace

how to log off from smb?

Hello Does anybody know, how I can log off a smb-connection between Suse 10 and Win98? I have an old Win98 PC and I use some of it's disk space for backups. I installed the samba client here on the SUSE 10.0 machine and everything works fine, except that it seems that Windows sees a new user each time I do something with a Windows-drive in konqueror with smb:// ??? When I shutdown Win it says "there are X users connected...". And Win get's so sloooooow with time, even when I do nothing with its drives. I thought, the samba-connection would be closed when I close konqueror, but oviously this is not the case.... Any help, please? GRUB problems

I have a machine at home which has SuSE and Windows on separate drives. A while back windows died and had to be reinstalled, which of course blew away the MBR. This weekend I booted linux from the dvd and proceeded to perform an update (9.2 to 10). During the upgrade, the GRUB install failed (couldn't find stage 1). I tried every combo offered in the way of where to install GRUB, but it failed every time. I usually install it in the MBR of /dev/hda1 (windows drive), which may or may not be the best place to put it. Even so, I tried installing it in the boot sector of the root partition, but still no joy. 10.1 Beta 9 uses too high refresh for 1280x1024 LCD

This is the same thing that happened when I installed SUSE-10.0 boxed set on this machine -- when starting the install using the default 1280x1024 resolution, the installer uses too high a refresh rate for my brand new HP vs17e LCD monitor H: 46.4 kHz V: 87Hz. The best resolution for this device is 1280x1024 at 60 Hz (any higher refresh leaves the screen blank). Selecting 1024x768 resolution allows the installation to continue. Oddly enough the refresh it uses for 1024x768 is 60Hz. Is there any additional information I should gather that can help sort this out before 10.1 goes gold?

SuSE Enterprise Server - Opinion Please

Hi, Anyone using SuSE Enterprise Server 9? I would be very glad to hear your opinion, both good and bad. BTW, I have few questions: 1) What proprietary software (from Novell or anyone else) is included in SuSE Enterprise Server 9? 2) What is the foundation of SuSE Enterprise Server 9? SuSE Linux 9.2 or 9.3? 3) Cost of the SuSE Enterprise Server 9 is for one server, or it can be installed on any number of servers, Like SuSE Linux itself? 4) Does it include Open Exchange? The future of SuSE Linux as we know it?

I'm still confused as to what product offerings will be available in the future. I've been using SuSE linux since 5.2, and have purchased the Professional distribution with every release. Looking over the website, I don't see it offered anymore. Can someone please clarify what the future of the traditional SuSE Linux distribution will be? -- "Whoever controls the histories of nations controls those nations and their peoples." Germar Rudolf
