10.1 Beta Installation Trouble and experience

This time I've had serious trouble before I succeeded to install 10.1 beta2 on my multiboot K7 (3 Linux installations and Win2k), finally from burned CDs. At first, even not actually a problem, but easy to oversee what happends. What is the idea behind the change of the Yast2 partitioning that now by default try to split the last disk partition in two? I wished as for previous 10.0 to install 10.1 beta in one root partition on the same /dev/hda12. But now at each installation attempt, Yast try to remove and split this partition in two smaller partitions /dev/hda12 and /dev/hda13, one for /home and one for root. In my opinion the user should safer do this selection if actual, not Yast by default. I tried a couple of times to upgrade from 10.0 to 10.1 beta1 using the Internet installation, but the downlad speed was slow and the upgrade installation hung after the first reboot, with a corrupted 10.1 installation as a result. But even after downloading the 10.1 beta2 CDs, I've run into installation trouble. There were boot messages like "Kernel panic - not syncing: Fatal exception in interupt" "Fatal error inserting Thermal (........)" "Trans replayed: ....a lot of messages" I installed a standard KDE selection, with no conflicts, but during the later Yast configuring fonts the installation hung and I had to reboot. Trying a normal KDE login there was almost no interactive response, the menus was available but no application started and the system hung. A secure boot and command line login was possible however. As my Internet line wasn't found, I corrected the hostname in /etc/hosts. But in addtitin I had to run a couple of Yast repair installation, which told a minimal installation had to be done. After this I added Gnome and more, and now the 10.1 beta2 installation finally looks to work interactive. I also discoved that Shutdown doesn't Power Off my K7 any more. Is this a bug in 10.1 beta2 or? As beta3 now is released I tried Yast2 Online Update, but no update was found (only an error message). Therefore I wonder if there isn't any Online Update possibility from beta2 to beta3, without the need to download and burn the full five new CDs and do an Upgrade installation? Rgds, Terje J. To go up the Bash history with <Page Up>

Just a stupid question for my knowledge. I love that feature of the SuSe distribution that allows to fetch all the instruction in .bash_history that startx with the few characters typed in shell followed with <Page Up>. I hope to have myself understood. This feature does not exist in other distributions like Debian. Question is: in what script is this feature encoded? problem with network initialization in SuSE 10???

Hi, Okay folks! Please help, this is driving me nuts. Apologies for the X-posting. I have a AMD64 machine (SuSE 10 64bit) connected to a switch. At boot time my PC tries to NFS mount 3 exported partitions from a SLES server attached to the same switch. The PC fails to mount any of the NFS shares at boot time. I suspect that there could be a couple of things broken, since if I insert a ping command at the end of the start) section of etc/init.d/network, my machine reports "no route to host". Leading me to think that the network really isn't up. So, I inserted a `sleep 20` prior to the ping command, the machine sits there, then reports "no route to host". Eventually, the network must come up, since if I then log in through KDM I can browse the web etc. But the only way I _ever_ get my NFS shares mounted is if I issue a `mount -vat nfs` command manually. Now I don't mind waiting for the network to come up, but shouldn't SuSE be waiting too? I.e. what's the point in trying to mount NFS shares if you don't have a working network? FYI we have several x86 machines and a single AMD64 (SuSE 9.3 64bit) that start up and NFS with the server with no problems. As always, any help much appreciated. Cheers, Jon.

Suse 10 KDE, how to create the following links

I can browse with konqueror to /dev/video0, click on it, and open with mplayer. How can I create a link that will do the same thing. Have tried several of the options from mplayer -h and mplalyer -vo help, but nothing works. Also, I execute ./ptune-ui.pl and I have a link for that, but I get a bouncing icon for as long as the application is open. What is causing that? Art

Atheros wireless drivers in Suse 10.1 Beta3

Hi, I have searched the extras directories and rpmfind.net for the kernel-default-nongpl-<version>.rpm but I am unable to find it. Does anyone know if this is available yet? I managed to find the beta2 rpm of the non gpl drivers but the kernel version does not match. Thanks Steve Lamb

jabberd, mysql.. how to initialize the database (solution plus bonus client question)

I've had mysql working for a while, now I want to play with the jabberd in suse 9.3, using mysql as the auth/storage system. I couldn't find the script to set up the jabberd tables in mysql anywhere after installing the jabberd package from the suse disc ( jabberd-2.0cvs20050111-3.x86_64.rpm ), but I did find it here: http://jabberstudio.org/cgi-bin/viewcvs.cgi/*checkout*/cvs/jabberd2/ tools/db-setup.mysql Hope this helps someone. The next problem I've run into is that iChat ( the only jabber-aware client I have handy) is failing to connect. Or rather, it connects but then immediately disconnects and doesn't successfully log in. I just get unenlightening entries like this in the message log: Feb 5 22:56:26 fess jabberd/s2s[23573]: ready for connections Feb 5 22:56:53 fess jabberd/c2s[23561]: [7] [192.168.42.97, port=58673] connect Feb 5 22:56:53 fess jabberd/c2s[23561]: [7] [192.168.42.97, port=58673] disconnect .. and a "failed to connect" from iChat. I have added the username, realm, and password to the authreg database manually and checked it via, mysql -u jabberd2 -ppassword -e 'select username, realm, password from authreg;' so I know that much at least works. I haven't tried any other jabber client yet though so I don't know if this is an iChat or jabber issue. (I've only been working on this for a little while this evening, and just tried iChat for the first time a few minutes ago.) Would it help to find more recent jabberd2 sources? Anyone else messing with this stuff? The docs on jabberd are a little skimpy.

Converting my son - printing

Hello SuSE people, Hope you can help with the final conversion. After many crashes, worms, virii, etc. in Windows I finally convinced my son to allow me to install SuSE 9.2 on his machine. All went well and he is learning the Linux way. Except !! that he cannot print! Unfortunately, during the Windoz period, he purchased one of those all-in-one Brother printer/scanner/copier things. I think the model is MFC 4230C or 3240C or something close. I don't think it it is supported. Yast does see it though. Just hoping someone on this list has run across this and successfully installed this beast in SuSE. I need to keep my son converted!! Any help appreciated. Bob S.

Delay unmount using submountd?

I have an external USB hard drive connected to my SuSE 9.2 box. By default, SuSE uses submount to mount the drive in the /media directory. It appears that submountd immediately unmounts my drive whenever it is not being used. Does anyone know of a way to delay the unmounting of the drive? I would prefer the drive to stay mounted for say 1 minute after a period of inactivity. The reason i'd like to do this is that it takes submountd quite a long time ( ~10 seconds ) to mount the drive so if I want to access it frequently it gets quite annoying. Thanks, Scott

Good, I hope that it works for you as well as it does/did for me. BTW, I purchased that board from Monarch who have excellent Linux knowledgeable people on staff. They are the ones that reccomended it. When I purchased it, it was a mid-priced board. Might be even cheaper by now, or, there may be a successor for that board. Wish you the best of luck. Bob S.
