[opensuse] ISOs and LAN network install

Hi guys, I downloaded the openSuSE 10.1 ISOs with BitTorrent, but discovered that they are too large to burn to the CD-Rs at my disposal. So, I thought I'd have a go at putting them up on my LAN's FTP server to see if I could do a (local) network install. I downloaded, burned and booted from the mini ISO, and I've managed to get as far as the installer logging into my FTP server and requesting /boot/i386/root, which, unsuprisingly, doesn't exist, but it's not a bad start for a first attempt... Any ideas on how to go about this - converting half-a-dozen ISOs to something I can put on my FTP server and point the network installer at? The reason I'm doing this is because I've already really exceeded my ISP's bandwidth limit by downloading 3.5GB of ISOs (so I can't do it again by, for instance, installing from kernal.org), but as a result I have the install binaries on my LAN, it's just that I can't get 'em into the target machine in the originally intended manner (on half-a-dozen CD-Rs, 'cause they're too big). It's worth a try, but I don't know enough about the format the network installer expects. It would be perfectly possible to install straight from ISOs on an FTP site, but... Oh, and one more complication, I only have WinXP boxes at my disposal right now - nothing that can run *nix tools... All advice, including "don't bother", welcomed. [opensuse] print from command line through ipp using a printer defined in eDirectory

Hi all, We have our printers defined in eDirectory and accessibles through ipp. I'm trying to understand whether it's possible to have a script printing directly to one of these printers from one of my linux machiness. The idea would be the following: a file would be created with the name of the printer as the filename, I would have the script build the ipp address of that printer and send it the file to be printed. I never had to print from my servers (installed with the minimum installation, only cups-libs and cups-client are present) and it's not really clear to me 1) if it's possible without having to define the printers locally 2) how to do it I had a look at the lpr man page but it does not seem possible to have a kind of "lpr -p ipp://ip_address/printer_name ....". Matthias --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Matthias has spent quite a bit of energy on this list in the last couple of weeks trying to help me out with the same problem. Perhaps I can give back a bit by offering a precis of (my interpretation of) his comments: 1) The Fn-x keys are an m$ extension that doesn't (yet??) work in Linux 2) You can often enable the external port from the BIOS, so that it simply tracks what's going on at the LCD (mine is a Toshiba, but it does appear to offer this, so I'll have to check that out if all else fails for me) 3) You can also enable it in some drivers by using SaX to set up a dual-headed mode. If you enable dual-head "clone" mode, then the output to the external video mimicks what's on the LCD. Very interestingly, however, you can set up _different_ resolutions, scan rates, etc. on the two different outputs, so for example, mine has been able to generate 1280x800 on the LCD while compressing that to 1024x768 on the external port. I am unable to get an external monitor to work with Dell Latitude D820 using the Fn +F8 key. This works with Windows and worked with Suse 10.1. Is there a new setting to change or is the a bug in Xorg, Suse, or the Nvidia driver. It partially works with the "nv" driver, but the display shrinks to about one fourth the width. With the "nvidia" driver, it does nothing. Any sugguestions? [opensuse] How does X11 decide what graphics card you have?

Hi all, I'm trying to get my X server to recognize my graphics card properly. If I ask the system for hardware info, it knows that it has an Intel 945GM graphics card installed. But SaX is convinced that it's a generic VESA card and refuses to run in any mode other than 1024x768. This used to work (although the driver used to crash on mode change) in 10.1, I'm now running in 10.2rc1 Help, please! [opensuse] SuSE 10.1/1680x1050 Widescreen/nVidia <- does not work

Hi, I have replaced my dead monitor with new widescreen LCD ViewSonic VX2025 with native resolution 1680x1050 (I think it is equal to Apple Cinema Display and other 20.1" analogs). The problem is that SAX cannot set resolution over 1280x1024 no matter what I have tried. I even deleted x.org configs, reinstalled x.org, sax2, nVidia 9629 drivers and even reset BIOS. VX2025 is not listed in SAX hardware profiles, and unfortunately, SAX has a bug and it cannot read driver CD neither from Combo neither from DVD-R I have. I could copy vx2025.inf file, but I cannot find where. [opensuse] Realtek 8168 Update

Well, after all that discussion about the driver from Realtek for the 8168 chipset (the r1000 module), I updated my kernel. This, of course, was going to mean that I had to rebuild the r1000 module, until I plugged in my ethernet cable and it sprung to life using the r8169 module. >From the kernel-<flavour> changelog: * Wed Nov 15 2006 - x@y - patches.drivers/r8169-update-2.6.19: Update Realtek r8169 to support newer chipsets. Rar! [opensuse] CUPS setup question

hi folks, One of my printers is an older HP LaserJet 4L attached via epp port to one of my Suse e-boxes. This printer is shared on the network. Several of us print to this printer across the network using CUPS. The other client machines are also Suse e-boxes, 10.0. All of this printing works fine... here is the question: Does every machine *need* to define the printer driver, or just the host machine where the printer is physically attached? And the second related question is this... (for the moment all machines are defining the print driver) which driver actually formats the text for the printer... the driver on the client machine CUPS server, or the driver on the host machine CUPS server? I am wondering if I should call the HP LJ4L a "raw" printer on the client machine and only have the driver configured on the host machine where the printer physically is attached. Thanks. Ps... The good news is that since I have been using CUPS on Suse I have not had to struggle with my printers... they just work... but, I would like to understand a little better *how* they are working. What MS manipulatied this time are people that hate them and use Linux solely for that reason.
