Weird, isn't it? I have used that same command to burn other images (even an hour before) with no problem but the RC1... no way! [opensuse] Realtek 8168 Update

Well, after all that discussion about the driver from Realtek for the 8168 chipset (the r1000 module), I updated my kernel. This, of course, was going to mean that I had to rebuild the r1000 module, until I plugged in my ethernet cable and it sprung to life using the r8169 module. >From the kernel-<flavour> changelog: * Wed Nov 15 2006 - x@y - patches.drivers/r8169-update-2.6.19: Update Realtek r8169 to support newer chipsets. Rar! [opensuse] CUPS setup question

hi folks, One of my printers is an older HP LaserJet 4L attached via epp port to one of my Suse e-boxes. This printer is shared on the network. Several of us print to this printer across the network using CUPS. The other client machines are also Suse e-boxes, 10.0. All of this printing works fine... here is the question: Does every machine *need* to define the printer driver, or just the host machine where the printer is physically attached? And the second related question is this... (for the moment all machines are defining the print driver) which driver actually formats the text for the printer... the driver on the client machine CUPS server, or the driver on the host machine CUPS server? I am wondering if I should call the HP LJ4L a "raw" printer on the client machine and only have the driver configured on the host machine where the printer physically is attached. Thanks. Ps... The good news is that since I have been using CUPS on Suse I have not had to struggle with my printers... they just work... but, I would like to understand a little better *how* they are working. What MS manipulatied this time are people that hate them and use Linux solely for that reason. [opensuse] monitor time-out

Using SuSE 9.3. Up until a couple of days ago, the monitor would go into screen saver mode after about 4 minutes, as set in the control center, and then after some short additional time, the monitor would basically shut down, until the track-ball was activated. This second activity is no longer working. I went to the control center and checked the box "Make aware of power management" which apparently had not been checked before, altho the system did what I had hoped. It still doesn't put the monitor to sleep, as it used to. Monitor is a Sony CPD-1730, and has always been well-behaved. What could I do to restore the original performance? I have also tried to uncheck the "Start the software updater on login" inside the zen-updater configure option (right-click on the icon, select configure) and then saving the session on log out with no effect. There is no way in gdm to select any session other than the default, as far as I can see. -- Steven R. [opensuse] SuSE tainted

I've been a faithful buyer and user of SuSE since 1998. I didn't like the Novell takeover too much, but swallowed even if it was painful. I like the Novell Microsoft deal even less: as this list abundantly illustrates, SuSE talk is now mostly about about sleeping with the enemy, patent infringements, please include win32 codecs and the like. I find it interesting that the list is now split between whiners and non-whiners posting please-whine-on-the-OT-list messages My primary aim in moving to linux was to move away from Microsoft and its dubious business/licensing practices. I will now move away from Novell SuSE and its dubious practices. Many of you on this list who helped me solve problems over the last eight years will be sorely missed. Kubuntu, anyone? OK, many consider off-topic on this list to discuss the N/MS deal, but I see it coming back here every day, which means there are people here that are not watching/participating in the discussions at opensuse-project(a)opensuse.org. I did have lots of files newer than I thought on the drives, so I used the full version to drag and drop a directories worth at a time onto my Windows platform. The only small issue I had was I would have liked a way to preserve the file creation times, but they all got set to when I did the copy. Fortunately the last modified date was retained, so that was good enough for my needs. Hello, Trying to test x-symbol as per the instructions ( http://x-symbol.sourceforge.net/man/x-symbol_2.html#SEC20 ) within SUSE 10.1's xemacs ( 21.5.25.20060327 ) always results in an error. This happens of both the 32bit and 64bit versions of xemacs. Typing M-x x-symbol-grid in buffer `*scratch*' always produces the following error at the bottom of xemacs: "Invalid argument: Invalid tag set, (mule-fonts)" Subsequent invocations of the same sequence produces warnings like this: " (5) (default/warning) X-Symbol charsym nobreakspace: redefinition (not used) (6) (default/warning) X-Symbol charsym exclamdown: redefinition (not used) (7) (default/warning) X-Symbol charsym cent: redefinition (not used) " Installing x-symbol into the user's ~/.xemacs/packages/ directory results in exactly the same error. The only additional package installed is Imagemagick. The error did not go away with the M17 xemacs from http://software.opensuse.org/download/M17N/SUSE_Linux_10.1/ .
