Yast is unhappy with the kernel module for TV support

Have no idea what happened but until this morning I had an excellent TV image in a small edge of my screen in order to keep track when something interesting is coming. This late afternoon I was surprised by the absence of a station but after switching to the next one I got the same blank screen. I have updated my 9.3 much but there have been no problems in the week after the last update. Everything just worked. After checking cable connection and such I decided to reinstall the TV card. The exact spec is no part of the choices but they come close enough for a normal use. I choose one of the possible choices under The "Pixelview Play TV Pro (mine is said to be a PV-BT878P+W/FM) and one of the tuners close to the tuner on the card (Fl1216Mk2/FM1216 FM) and ran the rest of the Yast sequence. The choice of the channel scan was however ended with a error message which read; The kernel module for TV support could not be loaded. Under details I got: sh:"card":"70","tuner":"41":syntax error:operand expected(error token is ""card":"70","tuner":"41"") My kernel in use is 2.6.11.4-21.9 . I am using KDE version 3.4.2 level "b" and no idea what to do to get the TV card working.

If anything could get me to go back to MickySoft, this IS it!!!! pro. photogs and graphic artists who use Linux are at a HUGE disadvantage because there's NO WAY in Gimp to get consistant ACCURATE color matching from the screen to paper, no matter what printer one uses!! This is a VITAL area that I've complained about before and it seems to fall on deaf ears. MickySoft just may be going to do something right for a change. Java repository & YaST abort

I've been trying to grab java-1_5_0-sun... from the java repository as listed on the download page (http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/SL-OSS-current/inst-source-java/) however it always stalls or near-stalls (one day I did get as far as 25% in 18 hours of downloading). Anyone know if this repository works? Also I notice that clicking the "Abort" button offered by YaST2 does nothing. Kill works however. ;) - Bruce

Hello everyone, I'm planning for my possibly first laptop to replace my PC/workstation which currently run dualboot Suse Linux 9.3 Pro/Windows 2k. My two questions first before the somewhat long background below: 1) Suggestions to "state of the art" powerful, multimedia laptop models or mobile, graphical workstations suited for Suse Linux 9.3 Pro? 2) For me it looks like Linux currently more shortcomings on laptops than on desktops. I would therefore like to hear experiences +/- and suggestions with regards to Suse Linux 9.x support on laptops? Background: The time comes closer when I need to replace both my office workstation and my home PC. While waiting for the right technology (Xen 3.0) to run both Linux & Winapps, I've just started investigating if one single multimedia laptop or portable workstation can fill both my mentioned needs, plus additional mobility on the road. Actually I have no experience with laptops, because this previous has'n been actual topic for me. The unit has to be powerful enough to run medium Cad graphic and engineering applications beside usual office tasks, and include mobilphone web access. In practice I suppose to move the unit daily between my office and home, plug the unit to a stationary larger screen, separate keyboard and mouse on each location in addition to network, local scanner and camera. Maybe this can be achieved easy with a stationry docking station or stand on each location. However, currently there looks to be quite few vendors that (venture to) offer laptop support or sertification for Linux. Often the most powerful and interesting hardware (price/performance) from known and large vendors instead promotes the web logo "We recommend Windows XP" (only). Compile error on SUSE 10.0 RC1

Hello, I am busy trying to get my Haupauge WinTV-PVR 350 installed. It looks promising, because it is recognised. I follow the directions for 9.3 on http://www.homerengineeringcorp.net/mythtv/ I get to the part where I need to get Video::Frequencies installed. The other two go fine through `perl Makefile.PL`, `make` and `make install`. Video::Frequencies however does not seem to do this. I use http://search.cpan.org/~mlehmann/Video-Capture-V4l-0.225/Frequencies.pm the file Video-Capture-V4l-0.225.tar.gz I am able to do `perl Makefile.PL`. With `make` it gives an error. Below the output when I run `make` a second time: I also tried `perl -MCPAN -c shell` and do it from there with the same result. Under SUSE 9.1 I can do the `make`. No idea if this is SUSE 10.0 RC1 related, perl related or something else. Because of that I also have no idea where to look for a solution or who would be the best to report the problem to. I have some probems with k3b: The program can't find growisofs, despite the fact that the program is in /usr/bin and /usr/bin is in the search path. I'm trying to make a backup copy of one of my DVDs. I am using dual (8.5gb) media in a drive that supposedly writes to it. Will the present tools use it, or not? Hypothetically, if the files are unencrypted on my hard drive, could I just format the disc and write VIDEO_TS it? Will it work that way in a standard DVD player? -- He's the kind of guy, that, well, if you were ever in a jam he'd be there ... with two slices of bread and some chunky peanut butter.

Mates, Strange happenings. After configuring hylafax and dialin services, I shut the machine down for a reboot. On reboot, the NIC will *not* start. The error is: Waiting on mandatory services. It fails saying no config file found. WTF?? (hylafax and ppp and mgetty should have nothing to do with my eth0 config and should not have affected anything) After much pain, I discovery that the problem file in /etc/sysconfig/network is: -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 290 2005-09-18 21:02 ifcfg-eth-id-00:04:5a:87:c8:43 *Now* this is the file that the system (presumably) has been bringing the NIC up with for a long time. [No I haven't changed NICs] The fix? I Simply: mv ifcfg-eth-id-00:04:5a:87:c8:43 ifcfg-eth-id-00:4c:69:6e:75:79 ...but... What in the world could have caused the config to get screwed up in the first place?? Yast woudn't fix it when I went in and changed fixed-dhcp to force a re-write of the config files. Ipods and OpenSuSE?

I can't get my ipod to recognize itself in SUSE 10.0 (beta 3). It used to work just fine - modprobe-ing ieee1394 and ohci1394 aren't working at all. Has anyone used a (firewire) ipod, and if so, how'd you get it to work? TIA -Chris

Doubt about SMP's and parallel jobs

Hi, This could be a bit off the list, but still ... The output of uname -a of my machine is as below Linux achala 2.6.11.4-21.8-smp #1 SMP Tue Jul 19 12:42:37 UTC 2005 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux, and I guess SMP stands for Shared Memory Processor. I have a two processors on my mother board. I am doing my work in Molecular Dynamics simulations. So most of the time I would be doing a lot of number crunching. Now if start a job on my machine, does it automatically run using both the processors on my machine, or will I have to use a message passing library like MPI to use both the processors? I experimented with this some time back, I ran the same job with ./executable and also mpirun -n 2 ./executable on my machine (no clustering or anything). samba nmbd configuration problem

I used YaST -> Network Services -> Samba Server to configure samba. Under Identity -> Advanced Settings -> Expert Global Settings, I set interfaces = 192.168.10.10 os level = 65 then started up samba. Unfortunately, the interface is on 192.168.1.10, a simple typo I made. So I corrected it. Compiling Apps

I'm running 9.2 and have encountered this error after a ./configure several times. "checking for Qt... configure: error: Qt (>= Qt 3.2) (library qt-mt) not found. Please check your installation! For more details about this problem, look at the end of config.log. Make sure that you have compiled Qt with thread support!" Now, I looked in /usr/lib/qt3/lib and found libqt-mt.3.3.3 and a couple of links to it. I didn't build Qt, but installed it as part of the standard Linux installation process through YaST. I also checked /etc/ld.so.conf and found that while /usr/lib was there, the aforementioned folder was not so I added it and ran ldconfig. It seems like if the lib and its links are there, all should be good, but it's not. I've also looked at some forum discussion and didn't find anything that fixed it. Have others encountered this problem? Do I really need to rebuild Qt with thread support? I know KDE itself is using threads so that doesn't seem right. If /etc/ld.so.conf contains /usr/lib, does the build environment know to look in subdirectories also? Thanks for the help. -- Bill Lugg Milstar Software Support Peterson AFB, CO

xen problem

I have been working with the betas and now rc1 of opensuse 10 and i can't get xen to bring up networking. I can boot dom0 just fine and then domu but no network devices ever show up on the domu.. I tried different machines and no help.. I did a install this weekend of fedora core 4 to see if it was the hardware and that networking came up file in all virtuals.. So I have to ask is there something broken in the 10.0 release or am I doing something wrong? Ray

I think OpenSUSE 10rc with KDE is a lot better and faster then 9.3 Untill now i found just small problems with simple solutions because i was the problem maker. I`m happy with the extra`s from packman. So just some positive news, i`m still working further to get my computer even better. I just have a lot of fun. Ben

My icons won't stick

On my 9.3 setup, updated recently I los three icons. They are just shown on my KDE desktop as a piece of paper. I wanted to put back the original icons and have run into following unexpected problem. Mozilla Firefox icon is not there where I thought it should be under the applications. Could not be found so I just choose some other icon. Skype icon is not found in the applications. AlsamixerGui and Xawtv4 are symlinks and when I wanted to give them their icon back I found out that both depended on a symlink to /usr/share applications and that both symlinks had to be changed ownership (booth where root root). After changing the ownership I got rid of the information that I had not enough rights to change the icons but they just do not show up. They still both have the empty paper showing. Do not know what happened with the desktop icons and hope somebody is able to point me in the right direction.

Fail to make custumized iso

Hi I 'm trying to build a customized iso of super super, but yast doesn't take my package change. I see INDEX.gz and ls-lR.gz, and have my new package ( Mplayer, w32codecs, etc ), i add those package to /suse/setup/descr/default.sel too, but when i run the script to create the iso i have these errors: crear.sh: line 18: create_package_descr: command not found mkisofs: The option '-P' is reserved by POSIX.1-2001. mkisofs: The option '-P' means 'do not follow symbolic links'. mkisofs: Mkisofs-2.02 will introduce POSIX semantics for '-P'. mkisofs: Use -publisher in future to get old mkisofs behavior. INFO: UTF-8 character encoding detected by locale settings. Assuming UTF-8 encoded filenames on source filesystem, use -input-charset to override. I think that's the problem, any help ... please. Hi guys, I need to install SuSE on a laptop's 40GB HDD. Unfortunately, even I freed enough space and defrag it from XP, it still keeps some files near the end of the disk. I tried a trial version of Diskeeper as well, still the same - no one wants to move these files to the free space in the middle of the disk. Do you know any good (and possibly free) tool to do that. Installed (32-bit) from the OpenSuSE beta3 CDs (gave me a pretentious splash screen). Found that the 10.0 'base' apt depository was already accessible. Upgraded (with apt) a whole bunch of packages (gave me the normal splash screen). My experience with 9.3 was relatively "rough" throughout. So far with 10.0 it's been "very smooth". mikus

I use the new suse 10.0 (RC1). problem is I have upgraded successive betas, so I don't anymore know exactly what is my config. I can play mp3 files with mplayer (sound is quite low), but can't acheive to hear audio cd's. kcd, xmms seems to work, read tracks, but don't issue any sound. so I beg it's a mixer problem. the mixer is kmix (3.4.2). problem is kniw changes layout very often. in the present version, I can't make it give cd sound. Error adding to Yast change installation module

I've been trying to load three sites into the Change Source of Installation Module in Yast: ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/projects/apache/apache2/9.2-i386/ ftp://suse.mirrors.tds.net/pub/projects/apache/apache2/9.2-i386/ ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/projects/apache/subversion/9.2-i386/ All three give the same error message: Unable to create installation source from URL:(each of the above) Details ERROR(InstSrc:E_no_instsrc_on_media) I've read the archives on this error and I'm not making those mistakes. These are my server and directory values that I enter: suse.mirrors.tds.net pub/projects/apache/apache2/9.2-i386 I've deleted, backspaced and reentered to data so there should be no hidden spaces or other tokens. Any ideas on how to fix this and get these rpms installed? Thanks, Jerome I've been doing some checking. It seems this error message doesn't happen on the /pub/suse/ branch but it does happen on the /pub/projects/ branch of the file tree. I've tried three different directories on this branch all with the same result. I'm using two machines, 9.2 and 9.3 to test with. Would someone else try to do this and publish their results here? Also the Novell Cool Solutions: http://www.novell.com/coolsolutions/feature/11504.html Shows /pub/suse/i386/9.2/ in the 'Directory on Server' window with a leading forward slash. This shows up in the Yast Software Source Media window like this: ftp:mirror.mcs.anl.gov//pub/suse/i386/9.2/. Folks, I want to mirror my linux partitons to another drive before running checks on the original HD. There are numerous ways to "mirror" filesystem including dd, tar, cp, cpio, etc... In addition there are utilities to do the same thing. Firefox 1.5 Beta 1

It wasn't until I installed Firefox 1.5 Beta 1 from the mozilla site, I realised how slow the Firefox 1.06 is currently on RC1. To be specific. I had installed Gnome 1 CD install of RC1, and I found that Firefox, was slow, not on actual loading, but just scrolling large web pages. What I thought openSUSE was going to be.

I am a little confused with one regard of the openSUSE project and the goal of making SUSE Linux the most widely used Linux. And something that I believe will need to be changed in the near future to achieve that goal. It has become quite clear that the openSUSE project is not really a user project, and in its current form is a developer only project. Just look at the example of normal users asking for help on this supposedly general openSUSE mailing list and told to go to a non-opensuse place because this is a development list. This now also confuses the aim of the openSUSE wiki (my main contributional input to this project so far), who is it aimed at? The end-user or the openSUSE developer/contributor? If I want to write SUSE end-user wiki should I go to: http://wiki.novell.com/index.php/Cool_Solutions_Wiki_Main_Page ? or perhaps submit articles to http://www.novell.com/coolsolutions/ (and even earn points). I would like openSUSE be a distro with a user community to rival anybody and here is what I believe openSUSE should do: 1. Rename SUSE Linux OSS to openSUSE Linux - you can't build a user community if you have nothing to build it around. 2. OpenSUSE.org has to be a full self contained entity with a "everyone is Welcome here" attitutude. This therefore requires web forums for support. Mailing lists and news readers are not good enough for newbies. There is no choice. If you don't like web forums, get over it or don't go there, the mailing lists should be untouched. Otherwise can someone explain how the openSUSE project actually intends to reach one of its stated goals, it just won't happen by accident... Peter 'Pflodo' Flodin.

Hey Group; HP is having a WEB base course on MySQL and php. I decided why not take it - it is free and seems rather open source friendly. I have SuSE 9.3 Apache2 and MySQL 4.1.14 I have the php module installed and as a check phpMyAdmin runs. Therefore, I believe Apache, php module and mysql are working. However, with HP's one line simple echo date code and any similar code created by Bluefish fail. Am I incorrect with the simple test of apache and php or am I just missing it. The HP code is basically [ echo date( stuff ); ] and ends up just executing date and displaying. I have Xilinx FPGA tools installed from the Xilinx CDROM. I can go to /usr/xilinx/bin and execute the isc binary with Konqueror fine. File permissions on the binary, and all of the files in the directory are rwxrwxrwxt with owner root. I create a link on the desktop to this binary and it will not execute and no message in the log files. The link shows the user as part of group root. changing the permissions to the same as the the file does nothing. Tried many combinations of the permissions in the link to no avail. Why is this happening and how can I create a desktop link to execute the program? Art

Install the package "sysstat" from the installation media. Then do `chkconfig sysstat on`. By editing /etc/cron.d/sysstat you can make it run more frequently. (Every 10 minutes is the default, for an unstable system you may want to turn that down to every minute or two.) That'll give you very, very detailed logs of hardware statistics. You can use the command sar to display it. `man sar` or look at http://www.die.net/doc/linux/man/man1/sar.1.html for more info. So, yeah. That's a good general tool for system instability debugging. Has anyone managed to build libcaca on 10.0 for x86_64? I've seen the packages from packman for 10.0 and I've been rebuilding a few of them for my athlon64, sometimes with a few patches, but I am officially stumped on libcaca. I get a weird collision between ncuses and slang, it says acs_map has the same definition, but as far as I can see both in ncurses.h (line 218) and in slang.h (line 1323) they are integer arrays, albeit in one case signed and in the other unsigned, and in one case open and in the other numbered . Am I going blind or just stupid? Please, what am I missing?

Hi folks, I would like to know the ways to debug system freeze on linux (SuSE 9.3) Pointers on what log files or config files to check to determine possible cause Generate verbose debug info if required. The problem: -------------------- My SuSE 9.3 Professional system hangs very frequently. The behaviour is unpredictable. These are some cases I found where it's likely that system MAY hang. If there is high CPU activity for a long time e.g. ripping DVD (Sometimes I see high CPU utilization even while loading simple web pages) Hangs suddenly while Browsing net using Firefox/konqueror Checking mails with Evolution, KMail Playing mp3 with XMMS, Opening openoffice files, Using remote ssh, vnc or nx session from office I have gone through all the log files in /var/log but couln't find any noticable reason for my problem Most of the time last few entries of /var/log/messages include STATS Dropped message -- from syslog DEVPATH not set -- from smb/nmb but they are also present even when system is running smoothly System uptime varies from 30 min to 3-4 days I am 100% sure that its not a hardware issue as the same machine rocks when booted in Win2K. Here is the system configuration: ECS motherboard (VIA chipset) Not sure @ exact model no AMD sempron 2500+ 512MB RAM 80GB HDD nVidia GeForce MX 4000 AGP 8x card WinTVGo TV Tuner card HP PSC1315 USB printer scanner copier Services enabled: ssh, vnc, nxserver, vsftpd, httpd, smb, nmb Dual Booting with Win2K System is periodically updated with YaST Online Update in hope of getting remedy to my problems. yast not "seeing" new hd and partitions Suse9.2

Hi, I added a new raid (mirror) drive to my Suse 9.2 but the problem is when I try to view the partitions using YaST of fdisk I only see the existing drive and its partitions. Executing fdisk -l reports the old drive only executind fdisk /dev/sdb6 (one of the new partitions) reports correct data info on this. I ran mkreiserfs and mounted the new partitions but they still don't appear on fdisk -l or by running YaST partitioner. Is there something else I need to do? Gnome Clock Panel Applet problem on SuSE 9.3

I have a SuSE 9.3 machine that was running fine, and without any changes (tm!), the gnome clock panel applet no longer works. Whenever I try to add it to the panel, I get a dialog box that states "The panel encountered a problem while loading "OAFIID:GNOME_ClockApplet". Do you want to delete the applet from your configuration?" . I cannot determine whether the Gnome clock panel applet is in an RPM by itself or is in an RPM that has a bunch of other stuff as well to set about reinstalling just the clock applet. I found references to this issue when I googled for it. However, no solutions were presented. Does anyone have any idea how to fix this problem? or how to reinstall just the clock panel applet in Gnome? Thanks in advance for any help, --Moby

ls Colors is not making sense

Hi: Suse 9.1 I have an environment var called LS_COLORS set automatically by Suse which for a link has ln=00;36 which I take it should be cyan. However my links show red. I unset LS_COLORS, then my links show cyan. I look in the man page and info page for ls, of course they specify that: --color[=WHEN] control whether color is used to distinguish file types. The info pages attempt to be cool by organizing info into little hyperlinked categories, but only succeed in making it more of a chore to find what you are looking for. Where does the ls info explain what env vars affect ls? What is /etc/DIR_COLORS used for? Why did my links show red? openSUSE confusion

Sorry for yet another dumb question, but there's been lots of, what seems to me to be, conflicting info about openSUSE, SUSE-10; what is Novell and what is community owned/controlled/created/designated/what ever. Earlier we were told that openSUSE is just the name or the project and that the final product would be simply SUSE-10. and that it is a Novell Product. At least that's the way I understood it. Today Joseph Smith said: "Also, remember openSUSE isn't a "Novell product". It's a community Linux, that is supported by the Linux community. Again, much like Fedora. As a matter of fact, you don't even see openSUSE on Novell product list site ! When I first learned of openSUSE I assumed it would be somewhat similar to the Fedora/Red Hat offerings. That is, that there would be two separate and distinct distros. I don't see how one can have two separate distros with one name. Or is there genuinely an openSUSE distro either presently or planned for the future? Is there now a genuine community distro of SUSE or is the download version simply like other download versions of commercial distros? SUPER 20050911 with KDE Install Report

I yesterday installed super with kde (20050911) on my notebook, a Fujitsu Amilo D 7830 and have to say, that (almost) everything went fine. I did not try the built-in modem, but it did work in 9.2 and 9.3 with the smartlink-driver. Every hardware was configured correctly including graphics and lcd was recognized correctly too. There only were two issues which seem to be on the super-iso, but I did nit try RC1 yet. I selected German to be my language during install(not in Bootscreen,if this makes a difference), and the slideshow during install was english and for kde the kde-i18n-de package was not installed. i had to install this after completing install, so kde was in english for that time. I even had to change keyboard settings via YaST to have german layout. These were the only installation-issues for me and these are only enhancements for install, but I know from 9.3 and 10.0 betas, that this works in common,so it would be nice to work in super too. But anyhow, it runs very well and fast compared to 9.3, which was installed before on this notebook. Cheers, Chris

kmail and gpg troubles

Since the OLS key signing I've been getting signature replies with this message: Encrypted message (decryption not possible) Reason: Crypto plug-in "openpgp" could not decrypt the data. Error: Bad passphrase I was not asked for the passphrase, and if I extract the message it opens OK with gpg. I have since turned on gpg-agent and now email hangs and I have a bunch of these processes: SL 13:27 0:00 gpg --batch --decrypt I also cannot open Kgpg it starts the icon flashed a bit and it goes away. Using centericq or mc inside a screen garbled the display output (versions above 9.0)

Hello. Im having big problems getting apps like centericq and mc to display correctly while inside a screen. With SuSE 9.0 i had no problems at all but both SuSE 9.2 and 9.3 just messes everything up. The screen garbles and wont display the ansi correctly. Usuing mc -a works but centericq -a wont. Im using: termcap-2.0.8-879 terminfo-5.4-68 kernel-default-2.6.11.4-21.9 ncurses-5.4-68 ncurses-devel-5.4-68 screen-4.0.2-46 I have tried removing termcap and using only terminfo, no luck. Tried removing terminfo to use only termcap, no luck. I tried switching all the above packages (except the kernel) for the packages from 9.0, no luck. I use this only with a SSH-connection, so its no local display error. Any ideas?

copy all of xp, etc to a linux directory?

I have 2 hard drives and the XP drive is getting flakey, altho it booted today. Is there any way to copy the _complete_ xp drive, registry, files, and all to the Linux drive, and then, having replaced the flakey drive, copy all of that back, and have a bootable, usable xp system? If so, please give me detailed directions. I'm an RF guy, not a computer maven. BTW, the flakey drive contains the dual-boot system, and I could not get into that last night. I need to rebuild the kernel to support the LSI 1604 SAS driver... I have downloaded the sources and replace the fusion drives in /usr/src/linux... I then built the new kernel ... Make dep Make bzimage Make moudles Now what I would like to do is re-master the first suse iso 10.0RC1 disk with the kernel...I know I can mount the iso by doing By mount -o loop disk1.iso /mnt But what file do I need to replace to ensure the new kernel is ues durning bootup to detect the SAS drives? How to transfer kde-desktop settings?

Dear Suse Users: It is said that it's better to do a clean install instead of updating Suse (eg from 9.2 to 9.3). So far I've been running 9.2 but I installed 9.3 onto another partition. On 9.2 the home folder was mounted onto a separate partition from the root directory. I would like to use this home partition with 9.3 too. Simply mounting this partition under home in 9.3 results in ignoring my kde settings after logging in kde, and instead a brand new kde desktop is created. How could I keep my old kde desktop-settings like font types and sizes, desktop icons, background images and colors, icon types etc. in Suse 9.3? In Suse 9.2 I had kde-3.3.2 level "a", in Suse 9.3 I have kde-3.4.0 level "b". Hi! I installed gtk2_prefs on 10.0 RC1 and changed fonts. It works for example in the Gimp, GQview, Skype...but doesn;t works in Firefox 1.06 (same in beta 1.5) and Mozilla. How can i chage a size of font for menus in those to programs, please? Thanks, Mitja

Yast Vs Apt

I added many new sources to my Yast list, and it still seems to me that Yast is an inferior tool compared to APT. I tried to add MPlayer and some other basic programs, and it just complains about lots of conflicts, and all the resolutions involve removing programs or other extreme things. Am I missing something? Is there a way to make Yast actually SOLVE dependencies instead of proposing solutions such as "ignore and risk inconsistensies" or "get an older version of such and such"... Apt seems to SOLVE dependencies automatically and make things much simpler. Thanks in advance, Barry

I have SuSE linux 9.3 with two NIC's in it. Which was picked as eth0 and which as eth1 changed sometimes and I needed them to stay the same. This was solved by setting their names to lan0 and lan1 using the PERSISTENT_NAME option in their configuration files. However, both NICs are on the same subnet and I need to be able to pick which one is used to communicate with other hosts on the same subnet. Hi community, my problem is not really opensuse related but furthermore suse-specific. I have a DLink DWL520+ PCI Card in my computer which works fine with opensuse. My only problem is, that after reboot I can only see the network interface "lo" (via ifconfig). Sorry to bring this up again ... but what happened to the forum ? The openSUSE realease really is not very far away ! Maybe we could get on sites like linuxquestions.org an opensuse entry so that people wont get confused by the difference in name etc. ? A lot of posts recently on this list are simply end-user problems from people who are trying out openSuSE (thanx 4 those who are so interested) but this list is for development mostly ? This list seems somehow like the only official opensuse help rescource. We need more lists & a forum urgently IMO. Sorry for moaning but we can't just close our eyes & hope it'll just work out. In fact: I have three lvm mounts, these three contain my main samba shares, and thus 'export' perfectly with samba. And when exporting root fs via nfs, only thing I see is the directory mountpoints with nothing below it. The two machines use the same ldap server for authentication, and run the same os. This is what many manufacturers use to prep their machines for shipment. Packman sources in Yast

Is anybody else having problem with the x86_64 packman sources. Yast does not refresh the package list, I only get old sources which do not exist on the server. I have tried http://packman.iu-bremen.de/ http://packman.rsync.zmi.at/ ftp://packman.rsync.zmi.at/ ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/misc/packman/ and none of them work. Any help would be appreciated and I do not like the idea of using apt, as it is a little bit too flexible and can screw things up.

Lockups to Dropouts

I have had the most horrible time with SUSE 9.3. The Native video Drivers from ATI, and the madwifi drivers for the Atheros Wireless NIC completely lockup the PC. Worse, is that now the Ndiswrapper for the wirless NIC just keeps dropping out on me, and there are times when bringing it down and backup, IT locks up the PC. I HAVE NONE of these problems in Windows, by the way, I have also tried what few suggestions I have received up till now, all to NO avail. (THANKS to those who have tried to help!) Does anyone know of one of the following: 1. A way to compile the kernel so that I can get my toshiba laptop to function properly, or some little or rarely known modules that will help. OR 2. A way to compile the ATI Drivers and / or the Atheros (madwifi) drivers so that I can actually run Linux? (or a distribution that doesn't make it so hard on me?) I have posted all the hardware specs more than once, but, here they are again, Toshiba A75-S213, with a 3.33GHz Intel P4 HyperThreaded Proc, 1 GB RAM, with an ATI 9100 IGP, using 128 MB Shared RAM. An idea partially based on previous things such as SUPER: Maybe somewhere in the installation have the choice as to optimise/configure the system as to be a : Server-oriented system setup & parameters Desktop oriented system & parameters Music/Video - editing oriented system setup & parameters Thing is with one kernel one couldnt really get the best experience/performance for all possible uses. The high throughout put server system wont be the best possible low latency desktop media experience .. ehh system. configuring icewm - iceme & icepref

I've just got icewm running and am trying to get to grips with configuring it. I'm aware there are some configuration files that I could edit by hand (and I may well do that soon :) but Suse supply a couple of utilities with Suse 9.3 - iceme and icepref. How to transfer kde-desktop settings: part 2

Dear Suse Users: I am trying to transfer my Suse 9.2 kde desktop setting to 9.3. (See my other post "How to transfer kde-desktop settings?") I thought it may be easier setting up the kde-desktop by hand from scratch in 9.3. I did this: Installed 9.3 onto a separate partiton and set up my kde-desktop. Deleted the .kde .kderc .skel and Desktop folders from my _92_ home partition. Copied the .kde .kderc .skel and Desktop folders _from_ 93 home _to_ the 92 home partiton. Changed the 93 fstab so that it would mount 92 home partiton under / home in 93. After starting and logging in 93 my desktop looks different from that when the original 93 home was mounted. 1. The icons look different (eg trash icon) 2. The startup menu contains entries from the older 92 startup menu; these entries were not in the 93's start menu. How can this happen? I have completely replaced the directories mentioned above on the old 92 home partition. How to transfer kde-desktop settings?

Dear Suse Users: It is said that it's better to do a clean install instead of updating Suse (eg from 9.2 to 9.3). So far I've been running 9.2 but I installed 9.3 onto another partition. On 9.2 the home folder was mounted onto a separate partition from the root directory. I would like to use this home partition with 9.3 too. Simply mounting this partition under home in 9.3 results in ignoring my kde settings after logging in kde, and instead a brand new kde desktop is created. How could I keep my old kde desktop-settings like font types and sizes, desktop icons, background images and colors, icon types etc. in Suse 9.3? In Suse 9.2 I had kde-3.3.2 level "a", in Suse 9.3 I have kde-3.4.0 level "b". Your best bet to get the whole XP partition would be to image it using the dd tool, which is installed by default on SuSE linux. I found a thread with a couple of examples, which may help, at http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/history/350016 You basically boot into linux, mount your XP partition (if it's not set to auto mount) then run something like: dd if=/dev/hda1 of=/home/user/windowsxp.img which would mirror the 1st partition (the 1 in hda1) on the 1st IDE hard disk (hda; the 2nd hard disk would be hdb) and create the image on /home/user/windowsxp.img Maybe someone has a better idea though? Can't connect to local Apache2 server

What do the following error messages in the error log mean? Sep 8 12:17:51 james kernel: printer.c: usblp0: error -110 reading printer status Sep 8 12:18:03 james kernel: usb_control/bulk_msg: timeout I get them on a SuSE Linux V8.2 system running on a Pentium IV, the printer is a Kyocera FS-1010 connected via an USB Port. I tried to use the postscript driver and also the PCL driver, the problem manifests itself on both and postscript is unbearably slow. Thanks Peter

Use your SUSE boot cd and reboot. Upon boot, choose installation and then boot installed system. You could also use ddrescue and make a bit by bit copy verbatim to empty space and then again. there is ghost for unix. There is Kdar. Keep your system running so you wont get locked out. Error adding to Yast change installation module

I've been trying to load three sites into the Change Source of Installation Module in Yast: ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/projects/apache/apache2/9.2-i386/ ftp://suse.mirrors.tds.net/pub/projects/apache/apache2/9.2-i386/ ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/projects/apache/subversion/9.2-i386/ All three give the same error message: Unable to create installation source from URL:(each of the above) Details ERROR(InstSrc:E_no_instsrc_on_media I've read the archives on this error and I'm not making those mistakes. These are my server and directory values that I enter: suse.mirrors.tds.net pub/projects/apache/apache2/9.2-i386 I've deleted, backspaced and reentered to data so there should be no hidden spaces or other tokens. For the first time I tried installing /upgrading from a mirror. I first downloaded and burnt the DVD-iso but found it didn't have updated images for many of 9.2 Suse Pro, rpms. However, the mirror also an expansion of expanded distro structure that contained the missing images -- but also contained several (many) updated binary images. (under /suse/i386/9.3/suse/i586). However, in the same directory, I often find debug-info only for the original, example for "zsh", under i586: zsh-debuginfo-4.2.4-5.i586.rpm zsh-4.2.4-5.i586.rpm ** zsh-4.2.4-5.1.i586.rpm ** updated ** and under src: zsh-4.2.4-5.src.rpm ----- So I assume the ".1" release is an updated binary I am not readily finding the updated source rpms. I looked under src for ".1" updated sources (logical structural inference), and also under the '/suse/i386/update/9.3/rpm/src' but am not finding the corresponding source updpates. Are updated source rpm's available for download from some other source or should they have been distributed with their binary updates and already be present on the mirror? (i.e. a mirror out-of-sync issue). Just wanting my sources and binaries to match-up. Thanks for pointer to updated rpms... Linda

updateing KDe over slow connection

I have only a 56k connection from home. I use apt as a mechanism to upgrade. Obviously this is not acceptable when upgrading things like KDE. In work I have a fast 2Mb connection. Is it possible to copy a set of packages from one of the apt repositories, copy to CD and then upgrade via apt from my CD? Phil

as the subject says: How do I know if SuSE 9.3 kernel includes FUSE? FYI: FUSE is a kernel component that support userspace filesystems. Various userspace filesystems exist that use FUSE to do the necessary kernel work. FUSE is in the latest 2.6.14-rc1 candidate I believe, and I'm hoping SuSE has in the 9.3 kernel. In particular, I want to experiment with ntfsmount which is supposed to be more feature complete than the ntfs kernel filesystem driver. I have started with a basic layout for http://www.opensuse.org/Howto-Mail_server The main thing I put into place is a logical order. The main thing to look at at this moment is the Table of Content. For me the order is very logical, but perhaps others have better ideas. As mail looks simple, it is more complex then other things, because it can be seperated in so many things. Sending an email so the opther person gets it can be done any many various ways. I would invite you to see if the aproach is somehow understandable or not. I have used postfix and fetchmail, because they are the standard for SUSE. install SUSE 10 to SATA fake RAID

Is there any possibility to install SUSE 10 on a System with two SATA drives combined to a RAID with a fake RAID chip resp. software RAID with BIOS support -- such as for example my SiliconImage 3112A which creates some special signature on the (MBR of?) the hard dirve(s?) called "Medley". On the ftp i see the required dmraid package, but can YaST at installation time make use of my "SATA fake RAID" ??? Alternatively, does somebody know any document which despribes the installation with at least the / prationon on the RAID but a /boot partition on a PATA drive? Searching net and mail archives didn't help me there ... ciao, nico.

Problem with WLAN in RC1

Hi, I have just installed RC1 on my Compaq 610c laptop. Most of all, I am impressed of the speed, even openoffice is a quickstarter :-) BUT I have problems with the WLAN. I have a netgear WAG511 pc-card. When I plug it in, I can see it in yast, and configure it. The all fun stops....!! There is no way I can see it with ifconfig... Even if I turn of my internal eth0 and reboot, I can see no trace of it. I have tried with ifconfig wlan0 up, but with no positive response. I should try a modprobe, but I don't know wich module to probe. Anyone have any ideas? This worked very well in 9.3, and many versions before that.... Regards Fredrik Sjöstedt

Mozilla crashes with segmentation fault

Almost since version 1.0, I've been plagued with Mozilla crashing due to a SEGV, but I have been unable to track it down (it would be nice to have a Talkback-enabled version in the distro, guys). The only error message anywhere is in .X.err, which simply says that mozilla-bin crashed due to a segmentation fault. There is no pattern to the crashes -- it will crash running unattended, it will crash on almost any URL, all apparently at random. The unattended crashes suggest to me that the problem exists somewhere in common code, not just in the browser itself (all that should be happening unattended is email checks). Previously, it hasn't been so bothersome that I was prepared to go digging to find it (maybe I hoped it would just disappear in the next release :) ), but now... sometimes, when I try to reload, I get 3 or 4, or more, consecutive crashes on the same URL before it will load. Clearing the cache does not seem to help. For now, I don't want to speculate -- all I am looking for is some way to track this thing down. Searching bugzilla at mozilla.org was useless, an internet-wide google search for "mozilla segmentation.fault" produced 172,000 even more useless results (at least, they are more useless if the first 5 are any indication), and the SuSE database is silent on the issue. The only useful bit of information I have found is that there has been a SEGV problem in all Mozilla (and maybe Thunderbird) releases since day 1, and it has not gone away -- well, I already knew that anyway. I have installed the mozilla-debuginfo package, and I have found a shell script /opt/mozilla/lib/run-mozilla.sh (part of the mozilla package) which seems to allow the binary to be run from a debugger. Is this sufficient to try to track down the bug? If not, what else do I need? (Yes, I have the debugger installed!! :) ) I really do not feel like downloading and compiling a Talkback-enabled version, if I do not have to.

Cannot list files under root from ssh

I have a suse 9.3 server with no display, keyboard, or mouse which boots up in runlevel 3. If I ssh into the server, I cannot list (ls) files except under /home directory. Even su to root, I cannot do this. I also have freenx install and going into the kde gui with freenx, I also cannot see the files under root with Konqueror or Firefox. Any time I try to list the files under root in either ssh or freenx, is locks up. Any suggestions as to why this is? Is there a setting somewhere I am missing? Art

Suppose my lvm point is /lvm and contains lots of sub dirs and files and the *real* directory /lvm is empty. What I see on the nfs client is an empty /lvm directory, and and NOT the lot's of files and directories I should be seeing (and actually see, on the server locally and via samba). All non-lvm directories show up just fine. my exports on the server: / x.x.x.x(ro,no_root_squash,sync) fstab on client: x.x.x.x:/ /mnt/test nfs defaults 0 0 Result: all directories and files show up on client, except everything under (the three) lvm mount points. Selecting a display driver

I'm still trying to get my laptop with integrated S3 savage chip to use dri. I've found some good resources, but I still have a couple of concerns that I hope someone can help with. I've already mailed about the first problem (modifying xorg.conf). The second is that SaX2 currently reports my display driver as "savage" and xorg.conf has the line Driver "savage" in the Device section. I assume this corresponds to the file /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/driver/savage_drv.o (but I'm not sure how to check). The problem is that I think the driver I need to compile will end up as /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/dri/savage.so and I'm not sure how I can make xorg use this file instead. -- Paul

GIMP prints great, all else fails

Hi All, I have an Epson Stylus Photo R200 on my system, and I thought it used to print just fine, though I might be kidding myself. Anyway, I now find that GIMP prints to it just fine (using -oraw, and being set up as an R200 in GIMP, so it's basicly doing the printing itself) However, anything I print outside of GIMP, anything that gets processed by the normal driver, fails dismally. I get a stripey output that looks like the lines are being printed "out of phase" with reality. That is, each line ends either just a little early, or a little late, and the extra (or deficit) is made up on the next line. Any suggestions? Anyone else out there using an R200? Is there any way to force all printing to be done via GIMP itself for this? (I tried configuring this as an "EPSON Stylus Photo-GIMP-print" but that driver generates no output at all on this printer. linux modprobe: FATAL: Error inserting sonypi

I am trying to set up the screen saver on one of my non-root user ids and the screen freezes up. When I re-boot and look in the log, I see the following message -- linux modprobe: FATAL: Error inserting sonypi (lib/modules/2.6.11.4-29.9-default/kernel/drivers/char/sonypi.k0): No such device Not sure what the heck the system is trying to do, but I do not have a sony device on this machine (as far as I know). The CD DVD-R device is a Samsung. That's the only multimedia device I have. I went into packages and searched for sony and got no hits, so it would appear I haven't installed any Sony related packages. Maybe this is just used generically, but, if so, something is sure going haywire. Anyone else seen this or is there some general solution you can apply? If that module is only for use with Sony products, can I just delete the module? Any help greatly appreciated. Greg Wallace

It's failing because it can't find the right version of libapr. Which isn't entirely surprising. Try the subversion packages at ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/projects/apache/subversion/ ... What level of academia? What's your current authentication architecture? (I implemented a couple of linux machines for a 5th grade classroom a few years back, using Debian. Been a while, though.) Hi, I have a RedHat server, with Cups installed and a parallel printer attached to it. It prints OK. The IPTABLE has ports: 515,630,631 and 161 open for the network. The queue is set to default and shared. I have tried unsuccessfully to configure printing from a Pro 9.3 up-todate. Yast | Hardware | printer | 1. Listening to CUPS servers to provide access to remote queues. (change) 2. Port for listening to remote CUPS servers is open on EXT, INT. (change) 3. Running a program as root?

What steps do I need to take to enable video playback on an x86_64 system running the NVIDIA proprietary driver? Is this even possible? I had heard that the proprietary driver didn't work for playback. I've tried to install the w32-codecs to get kaffiene running and they don't seem to be taking... Any help would be appreciated. I am trying to install my HP dekjet 3820 in Opensuse 10.0 RC1. I am using the 1 cd intall, my printer is deteced, but when I print out a testpage with photo, the are bearly no colour, the 25% circle are almost invisible. The are only one printerdriver that Yast will use, It is a Foomatic-gimp thing. I have tried the Opensuse 10.0 beta 3 5 dick download, and there I had other and better driver for my HP printer. problem with 2 network devices

Hello, I just had to reboot the suse 9.3 server and ran into a problem. The system has two on board network (Ethernet) devices which are used and connected to the internal and external network. eth-id-00:02:b3:e9:d2:cc for external network and eth-id-00:02:b3:e9:d2:cd for internal network When the server started again the network interfaces were assigned the wrong way. instead of setting it up like this ----- eth0 device: Intel Corporation 82547GI Gigabit Ethernet Controller eth0 configuration: eth-id-00:02:b3:e9:d2:cc eth0 IP address: 192.168.10.10/24 eth1 device: Intel Corporation 82557/8/9 [Ethernet Pro 100] (rev 10) eth1 configuration: eth-id-00:02:b3:e9:d2:cd eth1 IP address: 192.168.100.1/24 ----- it set it up like this ----- eth0 device: Intel Corporation 82557/8/9 [Ethernet Pro 100] (rev 10) eth0 configuration: eth-id-00:02:b3:e9:d2:cd eth0 IP address: 192.168.100.1/24 eth1 device: Intel Corporation 82547GI Gigabit Ethernet Controller eth1 configuration: eth-id-00:02:b3:e9:d2:cc eth1 IP address: 192.168.10.10/24 done ---- so just external config with internal config swapped. The server basically doesn't work properly with this setup. Several reboots showed that most of the times the devices get the wrong config assigned. I thought that with the hotplug setup that should not matter but it did. Is there a way to make sure the server always get the correct configuration for the devices? My main concern is, when in case of electricity cuts the server get rebooted after the ups has done its work I can't guaranty the the server keeps functioning. Any help or hint would be appreciated. mounting a usbdisk

Hey Group; I have notices a strange thing about mounting my usb HD. It is a 16G sort of older HD in a USB shell. It will not mount on the first two or three reboots. Then on the forth time it does. Also I have noticed that I just leave it on 24/7 it mount about all the time. lsusb shows that it is seen in all cases. I have rerun boot.coldplug after a reboot and it still fails. When it works it work great. USB drive enclosure - excessive messages

I've just put an ATA drive in a USB einclosure and connected it up, and it is found as sdb1,2,3 and is perfectly accessible. However, every 3 or 4 seconds there is a message in /var/log/messages as follows (two to serve as an example). When I am using AmaroK to play music off this drive, the messages stop, but start again as soon as AmaroK stops playing (or is not running). SFTP and file permissions.

Hopefully someone on the list has some experience with this problem I'm having. I am connecting to my remote machine via SFTP using my local username and password. However, when I create a file in my directory it is supposed to be created with 664 permissions but it's not. Instead it is being created with 644 permissions. My question is how do I change the umask of a user logging in via SFTP? I have figured it out when a user logs in via ssh and creates a file. But I think that the umask isn't being set right when the user logs in via SFTP. Hence the reason why files are being created with permissions of 644 instead of 664. Anyone know where I can or how I can fix this problem? Thanks.

Samba makes my Suse 9.3 reboot

Konqueror can't access directory on vfat filesystem

Hi, don't know if this is just my problem or KDE bug, but I mentioned konqueror can't access some directories on my IDE disk with fat filesystem. But these directories are accessible with mc or application open dialog box (gtk apps or kde apps). Can't read a CD

I am working on a tutorial about howto configure speedtouch 330 modem ( see wiki). One important part in it is a about installing the firmware. Actually, it's possible to copy it from Windows ( after installing the speedtouch driver ), from the web ( but needs a complicated procedure to split a file into two files ) and from the manufacturer's CD that is provided with the modem. It seems that the last way is the easier, but the problem is that I can't read the CD from Linux. I also tried extracting the ISO, and mounting it with "-o loop", but it gives me an empty directory. Help.

xorg.conf - Lost its $%#ing Mind

Mates, This one is bizarre. Fresh 9.3 install. Working great for a week. I go to fire up kde and my mouse is moving r e a l s l o w like it is on drugs or something. So I end the current kde session, make sure no other sessions are running and restart. Same result. Well, I needed to bounce the system anyway for a bios setting so after bringing it back to life I issued the trusty startx command again. Now *no mouse* the pointer won't move. ctrl+alt+backspace. Fire up yast and look at the mouse. Yep, still ps/2explorer. Hello from Adam If you are wondering about the viability of CD/DVD longivity, they go bad as soon as you burn on them. Cnet reported that as soon as 6 months afterwards, they had CDs going south on them. For archival use, make or buy a USB external drive using USB2. I have built several drives using laptop (2.5) and desktop (3.5 and Full 5 1/4). The kits are cheap and the drives are falling in price. The laptop drives are very robust and take falls very well in those tiny enclosures. The most important part: no loss of data yet. Hi, where I could find info on how to make rpm for suse? Or maybe there is another solution for my problem. I have one old SuSE Linux Standard Server 8.0. In another town there is another such server. I have to configure support for APC Smart UPS 1500. I will use "apcupsd" package. I cannot find "apcupsd" rpm package for SLSS8 on the net. I get sources and compiled it on my server. How can I transfer it to another server? Any suggestions? Audrius

Keyboard not recognized -- new install w/new MB, processor, HDrive, etc.

Hi, everyone. Sending this distress call for my wife. We have just rebuilt her pooter. Trying to do an install (SuSE 9.3) on a virgin 250 GB IDE hard drive. Also, new Gigabyte MB, new Athlon 64 3200+ processor, new EVGA video card. We're using her old memory -- 1GB of DDR226 PC2100 memory (2 X 512). Upon starting up the pooter the screen to install SuSE comes up. We use the keyboard to select "Install." So far so good. It starts up and we click "accept" on the Novell licensing agreement. But after that we can't do any entry using the keyboard. We've tried 4 keyboards; none work. We cannot tab or do anything with any keyboard. So we can't configure anything where you need to keystroke (e.g., entering a password, or setting up the hard drive). Note: initially we could not get a PS2 mouse to work. Pooter would not recognize it. Then we tried a USB mouse and that was recognized. So we have a mouse at least. But we do not have a USB keyboard to try. It is so strange that initially the keyboard did work right at the start where you tell the pooter you want to do an install. But for some reason the pooter is losing the keyboard after it starts the install process. Any ideas on how we can get a keyboard recognized so that we can install SuSe? Many thanks. Gil and Judith

MPlayer wmv support on x86-64

If anyone has been having trouble getting .wmv windows media videos to play with the 64-bit version of mplayer: The only win32codecs rpm I could find puts the codecs in a folder called /usr/lib/win32 .. You need to copy the contents of this folder to a new folder called /usr/lib/win32/lib64 I don't know if this is the CORRECT way to do it, but it works great for me.

Postgresql Client Missing in 10rc1

I'm not sure if was intential or just an oversite, but suse10rc1 does not have the postgresql. Here I do a find against my suse installation directories. As you can see, version 10rc1 is quite light. To begin with, I had 2 independent problems. 1) The screensaver I had been using in prior versions won't work in 9.3. 2) Powersave shuts down my monitor after 5 or 10 minutes. I fixed 1) by simply switching to another screen saver, but am still struggling with 2). I can go into Runlevel Editor and disable powersaver and my screen saver works perfectly (runs indefinitely without the monitor shutting down). However, I'm back to getting the message "The powersave daemon is not running..." every time I start a session. Help with strange lockup - possibly NFS-related?

Hi, I have a bunch of SuSE 9.3 machines in a lab. One of them serves out /home to the rest of the machines, both via NFS and with samba. One of my colleagues is having a very strange problem that I can't figure out. I'm hoping that someone can point me in a helpful direction. He's working on a Windows machine, and he mounts his home using samba. On this mounted share, he uses UltraEdit to edit his code on the Windows machine, reading/writing to his home directory (again, samba mounted). When he needs to compile the code, he ssh's into a machine that has his /home NFS mounted. He starts his make and sometimes bad things happen. The shell completely locks. Some processes go into Disk wait state (D - uninterruptible sleep in ps output), and from that point you can't even cd into that directory without it causing the shell to hang. The _machine_ doesn't hang, but you can't do anything in that directory at all. Nothing I can do at that point but to reboot the machine to clear things up, and that doesn't even work right... The machine hangs on shutdown in some random part of the shutdown and the only thing that helps is a power cycle. All of the machines are fresh 9.3 installs, fully updated. The hardware is relatively old x86-based stuff in both the case of the /home NFS server and the machine that is mounting /home where he's compiling. The Windows machine is a W2k machine. I suspect that this is somehow caused by a weird NFS/samba interaction. I'm hoping someone here can offer suggestions about how to find the source of the problem. Thanks. David

Hello all, I'm fairly new to Suse and I just installed 9.3 onto my new laptop, I think its pretty good. I'm usually a Fedora user but I'm getting bored and want to try something else. Anyway, the thing I love about fedora is all the extra yum/apt repositories around the 'net, eg freshrpms atrpms dag wieers livna etc.... What I'd like to know is, are there any such equivalent repos for suse 9.3 ? I'm particularly interested in; mplayer + codecs dvdcss thunderbird (I know its standard in 10) kismet any help greatly appreciated. Brian.

I don't know if this can be seen as a bug, but... I looked at "midi" in yast and installed all that stuff. when I clic a ".mid" file, Kmid is launching, but fails with "can't open /dev/sequencer". There is no /dev/sequencer in my disk. I could probably solve this by tweaking, but is this the good way? should not this have been done by Yast??? amavis-new under SuSE V9.2/V9.3

I am encountering some very strange results when I try to run amavis-new virusfilter. When I installed sendmail + amavis under SuSE Linux Professional V8.2, it worked 'out of the box', and with 'out of the box' I mean that the only thing I had to configure was in YaST -> Network Services -> Mail Transfer Agent where I checked the 'Enable virus scanning (amavis) tick box. I tried to do the same under SuSE Linux Professional V9.2 and V9.3, but this fails. rcsendmail restart as superuser results in Xmilter-amavis: local socket name /var/run/amavis/amavis-milter.sock missing. If I understand the amavis-new documentation correctly, the old amavis (up to SuSE V8.2) used pipes, amavis-new uses tcp ports (2, one for receiving from sendmail, another one ro send the result back to sendmail). It appears as if only one of the ports get configured in YaST. Thanks for any hints Peter

Packaging: The real questions

Actually, there were a lot of discussions about packaging these days which covered many aspects of the problem. I am then writing this article to discuss and sum up what we should do. This isn't a question nor an answer, it's a invitation for everybody to build ideas and concretise our wishes. On the first hand, I'd like to discuss the packaging process, architecture, etc... I am still a novice but may be my suggestions would be welcome. - The first issue, as far as I know, is unified technical standards to build rpms. This issue should be adressed to Novell/SUSE, after analysing the technical documetation presented in Novell's website and looking for missing information. A build server should be created. - If they gave a positive reaction, then the next issue would be RPM trees, I suggest the following branches: + official : RPMs approved by the OpenSUSE community, ( could be the current inst-source repository ) + community : Unofficial RPMs, built by volunteers from all over the community, after testing, migration to official must be approved by the community, ( respects patents, open source ) + java : Due to the importance of Java applications, java packages should have their own branch. + extra : free redistributable packages ( non open source ), may contain dummy packages with scripts to download and install commercial packages ( ATI, NVIDIA, firmwares) like YOU. + nonfree : open source packages with licensing problems ( MP3, dvd playback, win 32 codecs ... ) ( In parallel , there should be another "devel" tree containing the same branches ) At this state, OpenSUSE would be in a better shape. And the commnity would be able to concentrate on more exotic projects ( My ideas : SUSE Live CD creator ; Yast package installation in command line ( install <package> uninstall <package> ) with compatibility with many repositories ) ; Klik for SUSE ; Server Edition, Network Firewall Edition, .... ) The real questions are: Who can do manage this ? How can Novell help us ? ....... Please critisize, comment, suggest.

The 9.3 binaries from (1) the samba site; (2) ftp.primastasys.com/pub/Samba-Packages and from ftp.suse.com/pub/projects/samba/ are all looking for the following files to satisfy dependancies: liblber.so.2 is needed by libsmbclient3-3.0.20-1 libldap.so.2 is needed by libsmbclient3-3.0.20-1 I don't and those libraries. That is the problem. I have: /usr/lib/liblber-2.2.so.7 /usr/lib/libldap-2.2.so.7 It may be a glibc problem, I dunno. The so.2 libraries were present in suse 8.2-9.0 according to google. Setting DPI is Suse

I feel that Fonts in Suse are big, so I decided to set dpi to 75. I modified kdmrx and Xservers to set it but it did't worked. It only works when I modify xorg.conf. Here is what I did: Section "Monitor" DisplaySize 427 320 It was 320 240 before. Is this a bug ? Do you know a better way to do it ?

Hello I have two SuSEs - 9.1 (name = svn, 192.168.0.11) on an old box destined for the scrapheap and 9.3 (name = zak, 192.168.0.10) on a new box intended to replace svn. I am not sure how to connect them. I tried unsuccessfully to mount the directory I am interested in on svn as "/svn" on zak. Logged in as root, this is what didn't work ... zak:/ # mount -t reiserfs 192.168.0.11:/srv /svn The first error was that /svn didn't exist so I created it. The next error was that "special device [everything I tried]" doesn't exist. This is the first time I have ever tried mount and got all my ideas from man mount. Where am I losing the plot? TIA Mike

apcupsd package suggestion

Hello, I just checked the INDEX file from RC1 and the apcupsd package there is: apcupsd-3.10.17a-3.x86_64.rpm There's a new one (3.10.18) with lots of USB related fixes. It was released in July 21st. Maybe the release date was too tight to be included on the beta versions. I just would like to know where can I point out this kind of issue? There's a package wishlist on the OpenSuse website but it's mainly to request packages to be added to the main distro. The vast majority of crashes that I've seen in Firefox have been a result of corrupt files in the profile. This is true across platforms: linux, macosx, and windows. If you've clean installed and are seeing the same issues -- and almost everyone else isn't, apparently -- it might actually be time to check your system for faults. Mozilla is a very active program, and it might be that you've got a bad piece of RAM somewhere that Mozilla happens to be the program hitting.

I have a HP 3820 Deskjet, and when I start to print a photo or somthing with colour, I can only bearly see that there is color on the printout. I have trid to changed drive with Yast, but I can not find more then one driver. I think that I had several other when i installed the system the first time. Can someone help me with this one????
