Hy people, Im doing a security research in 3 machines that have and oracle server, a was server and a apache 1.3 server, when i do a nmap to the servers the 3 of them have the rpc-bind port active is this necesary for a web server??. Thnx a lot!!

[this is a longer eMail - if you don't like these, please go to the next message and don't report I should write less text. thanks a lot.] hi all, I have trouble with the beta3 (and I think it will happen with beta1 and beta2 also, but not tested) running on my main machine. I have allready reported it as bug (#113536), and Stefan Dirsch was so kind to try to help, but closed the report because I use a no longer suppurted combination if chpsets from nvidia for my graphic cards. but as I think there must be a better solution then a not running SUSE10, I ask there for help. please, read first the bugreport, so I don't need to write down the hole story again. you can find it at: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=113536 my review of it all in short: - I can accept that my combination of graphic cards looks 'exotic', but I don't think so because there are out a lot of people out there who use combinations of cards and chipsets that are on the "no longer supportet list" at http://www.suse.de/~sndirsch/nvidia-installer-HOWTO.html#19 - I can accept that there is hardware, that isn't longer supported (even it is "my" hardware ;) ) as I have allready written in my last commend at the bugreport: I can't accept that YAST / SAX2 brings the fresh installed system into a stage, where a "normal user" get SO confust. not all have a working XOrg.conf as I have (as written in the comment, I have just copied the Xorg.conf of my SUSE 9.3 that run on the same machine to the place in the beta10-installation). what will happen if a "normal user" with no skills (maybe coming from windows, maybe allready deletet it during install of SUSE ..) came to the point where the screens just get blinking as I've written in my bugreport: - he waits a short time, don't know what to do, and pressing the reset button. the new system will start, with wrong grapgic card as primary. hopefully he has this second monitor on so he will see that - if not, he will press the reset button again ( and again ?). when he knows what happend, he will see the login from KDE or GNOME, and trys to login. hurray, if the has used not only alphabethic and or nummeric letters, but also special character like #&%$ etc. because his keyboard is in US-mode, so hopefully he knows that AND knows where to find his keys. if not - hurray again, he can't login, a dead system. if he can login, he has no sound, bluetooth isn't detected if he has a adapter installed, the printer isn't working, and if he wants to look TV on his card - forget it. thats all detected at the last point from YAST where he pressed the reset button, so it isn't working all !!! and the graphic - terible, not ready for working !!! if he realy attemts the same that I have done (pressing return while the screens are blinking between the activity from his HDs), he will get to the login screen on the wrong monitor (is that 2. monitor running ? ), but with the right keyboard-layout, and after login he has sound, printer etc. anything is fine. he will came to the point to install the NVidia-driver, because on a time he will start YOU. hurray, because the system isn't able to warn him that he a) needs the kernel sources b) he use a combo of graphic cards that doen't work with with driver) c) he will kill the hole system, because the procedure will fail, and end mostly in a not propper starting system - blinking screens again. how should he knows what to do ? right. he ask someone. maybe he finds a way to get this older driver as Stefan has advisted on his machine - but he can't install it, because the missing text console !!! even all attempts with booting from CD and trying to repair will fail. will he know that he could boot from CD into rescue-mode, edit the Xorg.conf, and put the right parameter (witch one ???) into it ? I don't think so. so, here are my questions: for me: - is there a way to tell YAST via boot commandline after the first reboot that it should not try to detect my graphic cards ? (AutoYAST isn't a realy good recommendation because I didn't get that working because missing profiles - I have tested that already) - why runs my beta-system nice with the old Xorg.conf after changing the driver from "nvidia" to "nv" (without 3D-support that I don't must have even it would be nice) ? in all: - is it possible and usefull to put dialogs at all points in YAST that contain checkboxes ( for all the hardware-classes that YAST tryes to detect) so that the user can make a decision what should be autodetected and what not ? - should it be possible and usefull to have a sort of "blacklisted" hardware from witch YAST knows that it doen't work propper, or needs older driver to get a working system ? and that prefent the user to download a driver that is knowble to not work with the combo of hardware ? for the ending: I know that I just could buy some new graphic cards - but I think thats not a real solution on my / the problem. we have already discussed about the fact, that openSUSE should be the best choice to work with linux - esp. for newbies and the ones who came from windows. thanks for reading, and any commend & recommendation ! regards, JBScout PS: sorry again for a poor english ! and a long mail !

Does this kernel 2.4.21-241-smp belong to sp3 or sp4 ??

Hy people, After looking in the mailing lists, i couldnt find anything on this topic, i have a server with sles8 and kernel 2.4.21-241-smp, the machine doesnt have SPindent installed i dont have permissions to install anything on it, but i have to know what sp its using sp3 or sp4, what i found out in google is that: *between 2.4.21-138 and 2.4.21-277 = SP3 >= 2.4.21-278 = *SP4 can someone comfirm this??

KWallet, 9.3, Gnome

Hi, Does KWallet actually work in 9.3... It doesnt seem to be storing passwords... I had at some point tried to uninstall it (kde utilities) with the view to get YaST to then reinstall it, but it didnt get removed... at the time was messing around trying to see if could get old binary wallet files to work .. dunno... was trying... now the kwallet app seems a little kaput... anyway to restore its intended functionality ? -- devosc

For enhancing the aspect of the opensuse pages, the use of images is very nice. However, mediawiki images use to link only to they own page, so clicking on the image don't send to the link waited by most users (the normal icons way); I asked about this on the mediawiki list and was answed this (below). could somebody test this and if good insert the appropiate code? Atheros driver under x86_64 not working.

Hi all, I'm having an issue with SuSE 9.3, 10beta1, 10beta2, and 10beta3. I'm running an AMD 64 3000 processor with the D-Link DWL-G520 PCI wireless G network card. SuSE9.3 sort of gets the card working every other installation with the native drivers, but I cannot shut down the interface without it freezing my computer. I believe this is a known issue that has been fixed, but in the 10 x86_64 betas, I cannot get the ath_pci module to load. The system says there are unknown symbols in the module. To fix this I've tried downloading the latest madwifi cvs and, using the SuSEbuild script from the madwifi help wiki, I've been able to compile the new driver. When I load this new module, dmesg tells me that WEP AES AES-CCMP and TKIP are enabled. WPA_Supplicant doesn't work with the module, but I can scan for Access Points and find them with the new driver. Am I missing something in getting WPA_Supplicant to work with the new driver? The errors from WPA_supplicant indicate that it is failing trying to implement an ioctrl operation on the ath_pci driver. I haven't recompiled wpa_supplicant from source yet. I'm using the rpm from the 10beta3 cd at the moment. So my question is, am I going in the right direction to try to recompile the wpa_supplicant from source? Or is there something missing when I'm compling the new madwifi driver? Thanks in advance for any responses. Time to fill another gap or two in my knowledge. In another list, in a thread that I found while googling for info about cyrus and postfix, I ran into a conversation where someone suggested that (for the purposes of the other people in the conversation - most of them setting up or managing fairly large mail systems) ext3fs was not as good as reiserfs, and they should do this: "In /etc/fstab go to the /var [entry] and change it to something like /dev/cciss/c0d1p1 /var reiserfs data=writeback,noatime 1 2 Reboot the system " I think the implication was that you can change the fs just by changing an fstab entry. Is that true? I thought that sort of thing would have been laid down at formatting time and just formalized in fstab, and would therefore be a bit more difficult to overhaul than just an edit of one file and a reboot. Also, while we're on the subject, is Reiserfs the hands-down better, faster, more reliable-in-both-ordinary-and-extreme-situations, file-system? A Linux Journal article from a couple of years ago seemed to think so, and supplied several feature-comparison tables to prove it. Or is that the kind of question likely to stir up religious wars? Rpm seems to load but they don't. How come?

I am having some trouble installing some .rpm files that I downloaded from packman. I was able to install about 200 packages with no problems but am having problems with about 20. I am using SUSE 9.3. Below is the commands and the output. In short I type rpm -Uhv d*.rpm and the packages seem to load, however, rpm -qa cannot find them and they don't seem to have installed afterall. Typing rpm -Uhv d*.rpm again doesn't give me a the package is already loaded error message. Yast seems to have the same problem, ie, seems to install the package but can't find it later. Or /etc/cron.d Look for /etc/cron.d/sysstat, in particular. That's the one thing that I know of off the top of my head that's supposed to run every 10. (or you could just do `sar`.
