exact audio copy in linux

Dear list members: Does anyone know of a program for linux that can be used to make an exact copy of an audio CD? Something that works similarly to windows exactaudiocopy (EAC). I tried to use cdparanoia - and it makes perfect rips -, but I don't know what tool I can use to write the wav out to a CD since I don't have a cue file with the index positions. Packman as Installation Source

The other day I got some real good advice about how to set up Packman as an installation source for YaST's "Install and Remove Software". This worked great for installing Mplayer and getting its dependencies. Today I noticed that Packman has an updated version of Kaffeine so I tried to install it just as I did for Mplayer. Unfortunately it did not work. YaST finds libxine1 as a dependency and attempts to install it but it is looking for version 1.0.1 and packman actually has version 1.1.0. Is that a problem on Packman's end? Is it a YaST bug? Do I have something set up wrong? What I did for now is download and install manually. Turns out libxine1 has other dependencies in turn, most of which I was able to fond on Packman. There were two libraries (libMagick.so.6 and libWand.so.6) I couldn't find and had to use "--nodeps" to get rpm to install everything. Itsdeems to be working OK except that Kaffeine crashes with segmentation violation when it exits. (It did this before I tried the Packman version.) Thanks for any help, either in properly using Packman as installation source, in finding the missing libraries, or in avoiding the crash! Bob

Is this a case for a replacement DVD from the 9.3 Professional package? (Not a rant!)

Folks, Disclaimer: What you are about to read *is not* a rant. Just the set-up to the question... I took delivery via mail Friday of a shiny boxed set for 9.3 Professional on my Toshiba Satellite 1905-303S laptop. When I tried to install it yesterday, the installation DVD wouldn't read packages unless I deactivated acpi at the outset of the install. Then, a significant fraction of the packages failed to install or couldn't be read in the first place. And when I finally hit the "ignore" button enough times and reached the stage where the installer was setting up the initrd file, the installation just hung up there and went no farther. I tried the installation several times, each one calling for successively fewer files, thinking it might work if I start small, then add programs manually later. But it still hung at initrd. Finally, out of frustration (and perhaps realizing that I qualified), I trucked off to Barnes and Noble about 9:30 last night to buy "SuSE 9.3 for Dummies." The installation using the book's DVD went flawlessly the first time, with acpi activated. Now, knowing that I didn't use the installation DVD from 9.3 Pro, can I still get access to the software on the other four DVDs? Or should I try to get another 9.3 Pro DVD 1 from SuSE, and, gulp, reinstall from that? At this stage, I'd rather chalk it up to experience and move on. But I also like compiling from source whenever I can, and Yast shows a much smaller "development" package tree on the book's DVD (it was tagged as a "special edition" -- which I took to mean stripped down) than I remember seeing on my 9.1 Pro installation. On the few programs I've tried to commpile, some configuration processes say they can't find X headers and libraries; in other cases -- plugins for Gkrellm, for example -- running "make" yields nothing but screens full of error lines. (OTOH, I have discovered the joys of apt!) Is there a way to get Yast to recognize the files on the remaining DVDs? Thanks for any suggestions on this... With best regards, Pete

SPAM Filtering

We currently POP our email from a hosting company. They do some SPAM filtering but a lot still gets thru. I know Exchange has a feature that can be setup to POP the email and then distribute it to the users. That way you can put SPAM filters on it for filtering. However, we are on a very tight budget and was wondering if anyone is doing this sort of filtering with an open source product like Postfix, Sendmail, or whatever. Or, if someone has different idea. SuSE apt upgrade 9.1 -> 9.3: success story

Another success story of APT usage in SUSE. I had two systems running SuSE 9.1, regularly updated with apt, and though i had newest KDE and GNOME, and other applications, i decided to upgrade to 9.3. The task was bit difficult, since some of installed packages were already "newer" than from the 9.3 ftp distribution. Also, i had numerous updates from packman, and other alternative package sources. Besides, i do lost of development, so my systems contained >1500 packages. before doing all the steps described below, you should get acquainted with what APT is, RPM, and other SUSE internals. PLEASE, NOTE: REPEATING THIS MAY DAMAGE YOUR SYSTEM APT IS NOT OFFICIALLY SUPPORTED BY SUSE-NOVELL! also, YAST update services may also not work properly after that. ! here is what i did: 1. backed up apt configuration, and other vital parts of the system. (such are /etc, users' data and mail, etc) 2. replaced /etc/apt/sources.list with a one from 9.3, and here is how it looked: rpm http://ftp4.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/apt/ SuSE/9.3-i386 rpmkeys rpm http://ftp4.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/apt/ SuSE/9.3-i386 base rpm http://ftp4.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/apt/ SuSE/9.3-i386 update rpm http://ftp4.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/apt/ SuSE/9.3-i386 kde rpm http://ftp4.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/apt/ SuSE/9.3-i386 misc rpm http://ftp4.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/apt/ SuSE/9.3-i386 x-ati rpm http://ftp4.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/apt/ SuSE/9.3-i386 mozilla rpm http://ftp4.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/apt/ SuSE/9.3-i386 packman-i686 rpm http://ftp4.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/apt/ SuSE/9.3-i386 packman rpm http://ftp4.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/apt/ SuSE/9.3-i386 security i tried to remove all "unstable" repositories from SuSE people and projects, enabling them diring this step could cause lost of tourbles. 3. i cleaned the apt-cache -- all files from /var/cache/apt/archives, leaving also empty directory /var/cache/apt/archives/partial and began the process root@host # apt-get update root@host # apt-get -f dist-upgrade notice: memorize the list of packages the apt is going to remove or to hold! and here my apt failed: the number of packages was too big, and it gave me an error message about that http trasport ended unexpectedly i could do nothing about it, but the solution was simple: i used SYNAPTIC, instead of console-based apt, it seems it has its own package trasport routines, so: i ran synaptic and did the following: 1. menu Edit -> Fix broken packages 2. menu Edit -> Mark All upgrades. 3. menu Edit -> Apply selected changes and synaptic started to download all packages -- soon all upgradable packages appeared in apt cache. now it is importrant to say some word about dependancy resolving: IT SHOULD BE DONE PRIOR TO APPLYING CHANGES IN SYNAPTIC: some packages might not be able to upgrade, because of dependacy issues. this can be resolved easily -- root@host # rpm -e --nodeps <name of package causing conflicts> in my case, i had to remove m4. and curl. Also, you may also need to resolve duplicated packages issues: root@host # rpm -e --nodeps --noscripts --allmatches <names of duplicated packages> when these packages are removed, apt (or synaptic) will install them atomatically if they are required by others. 4. so, if you are lucky, then synaptic will ugrade everything automagically, otherwise, it may fail, saying that some packages conflict with each other. in RPM it may be overcome by --force flag, i found no way to pass it into synaptic (for apt command it is --force-rpm flag), so i did the follwing: 1. i removed manually alll the packages that apt/synaptic was going to remove ( rpm --nodeps <package names>) 2. i installed all packages that synaptic dowloaded into apt cache: cd /var/cache/apt/archives rpm -Uhv --nodeps --force * 5. after that i ran once again: apt-get -f install // fixes some brken dependancies apt-get -f dist-upgrade // cleanup and rebooted the system. I still needed to fix some things manually, but overall, the upgrade went smoothly. APT - RULES! afther that you may enable other apt- repositories that you like, and use your sustem as before.

Take a look at fetchmail. It's been a while since I've used it, so I'm not going to try to go into configuration details. But I did have it set up, a couple of years ago, to grab mail from a POP server, deliver it to amavisd-new (which ran spamassassin and clamav on it), and from there it was delivered to mailboxes. (I think I used postfix as my local MTA, but could be wrong.) It does require a number of programs operating together to get it to work, but they're all very well documented and you should be able to get up and running quickly. tomcat 5 vhost

Hi All I am running a SLES9 box as a web server and need to add virtual hosts to the server.xml file on tomcat. There is no apache on the box so it can't be done there. What do I need to add and where? There is currently one domain running a site on the server at the moment. Essentially Under <host name is obviously www.domain1.com <http://www.domain1.com/> and www.domain2.com <http://www.domain2.com/> etc. I don't know what the appBase is, is it the same for all domains since they all stem from webapps What is the docBase for the below directories? In the below example what is the path="" for and what should it be? And can the context path be left blank ""? The split(1) command will do this for you.
