Today was my first install of SUSE 9.3, after a few years on other distros. My question is how can i turn off password expire time? Do I just set the values to 0 ? Autorun in KDE

Folks, Just wondering if there's a SUSE native autorun option in KDE, something to mount and run stuff on removable media automatically, similar to gnome-volume-manager. I don't want to resort of ivman yet. Thanks, Mike

Yast on line update problem

We have installed a Suse 9.1 prof. and from the last two week we have this errors from yast online update (you): 1) YOU don't retrieve the server list (i've temporaly solved by disabling YAST2_LOADFTPSERVER="no") but the system said that it was update but it's not true becouse some patches has been published this week ... 2) YOU display this information about the system and I think that's the problem: There was no update executed up to now. Product: unknown Version: unknown Base Architecture: unknown I've already try to check those file: /etc/sysconfig/onlineupdate /etc/youservers /var/lib/YaST2/you/youservers but it's look all good. ... we don't have much more ideas ... thanks in advance. no sound with mpg files

Does anyone know why I can't get the sound to work in kaffeine with mpg files? It works everywhere else: ogle, realplay, etc. -- %DCL-MEM-BAD, bad memory VMS-F-PDGERS, pudding between the ears

File/Directory Permissions.

Quick question about file permissions. I was wondering what the command line was for setting a directory so that users of the same group can read, write, and execute a file. Also, I was wondering what the command line was for when setting a directory permission/ownership was so that anyone in the group can write to the directory. I thought it had something to do with the sticky bit however, I'm not sure what the sticky bit does. Thanks.

Writing a program

Dear friends, I am trying to create a database program (eg phone catalog). Before doing so my main concern is what language to use? I have never programmed in Linux before and I want this program to operate from the prompt not GUI (eg YAST can be operated from the prompt). GUI is currently out of the scope of this program creation as the end users will not be using a Linux Desktop, rather they will be using their WinXX boxes and will probably be operating this program via ssh or something like that (still thinking about this part too). Can someone point out to me a language that I could write this program? Main features that must be present in the end program are: Text Menus Screens to input information. Screens to dispaly results of information. Will probably need to be able to do some mathematical operations. Printing will also be necessary. Looking forward to your opinions. Kindly, Chris

Gnumeric not works - SuSE 9.3

Hi, I like to use Gnumeric when do simple calculations. But in SuSE 9.3 in default installation Gnumeric acts strange. When I input integer number like 10 or 12 it does calculation. If I input 1,2 or 10,23 numbers in calculations it refuses stating that this is "Invalid expression". If I input in cell 1,2 or any non integer number it rounds it down to integer, i.e., 1,2->1,00 , 2,8->2,00 etc. >From where I can get normally working Gnumeric? My locale is Lithuanian, but I do not think that it is problem... Audrius

X two screens and two inputs

I have setup X with two screens configured as one big working area, but I was wondering, it seems I should be able to configure two screens as seperate work areas. Screen one with normal screen for output and keyboard and mouse for input. Screen two with touchscreen for output and input. The operator would work on screen one, the client would be able to press on screen two which would have a web browser in kiosk mode. Any reason this concept would not work? It would be fine if both screens ran under the same login session. Greg Engel

swap space question in 9.3 install

I'm installing 9.3 on an old Sony Vaio machine that was formerly a Windows box using the network install CD. When I get to the point where it starts the graphical installer, it tells me that I don't have enough physical memory (the machine has 128mb) and I need to activate a swap partition. So I aborted the install, put in my Knoppix disk, deleted the Windows partition, and put in a 512mb swap partition at the beginning of the disk. Then I restarted the SuSE installation and accepted the default partitioning scheme reccomended by SuSE as follows: -Delete partition /dev/hda1 509.9 MB (Linux Swap) -Create boot partition 64.4 MB (/dev/hda1 with ext2) -Create swap partition 901.1 MB on /dev/hda2 -Create root partition 73.6 GB (/dev/hda3 with reiser) (note: this is an 80gb Maxtor HDD, if that makes any difference) So when I told it to go ahead with this install, it errored out again because the swap partitions interfered with each other. So my question is this: SuSE wants a 900mb swap partition, but will it run OK with the 509mb swap partition?
