Choppy sound in 9.3 wiht SB Live24

OK, I'm running out of ideas. I've been trying to figure out why I get choppy sound in some multimedia (but not all) when I play via my SoundBlaster Live24. (OS = fully updated SuSE9.3) I have and onboard AC/97 sound card. Sound from all media plays fine if I use the onboard sound card (using any media player... MPlayer, Realplayer etc.) If I switch over to my SB Live24 sound plays fine from some media, and others it's so choppy you can't listen to it. I have done a lot of Googling to try and find a solution... based on what I found it seems that it could be related to ACPI... so here's a few things I did to try and clear it up.... - with ACPI on, if I do a rcpowersaved stop, I get about a 75% improvement in sound quality (less choppy sound but still bad enough you can't use it). - with ACPI=off on boot, I still get the same choppy sound as with it on. Doing an rcpowersaved stop has a marginal effect, but nowhere near as much as when ACPI is on. Seems kind of odd to me, but that's what happens. - I've removed ACPI related packages, but that had no effect on the choppy sound. Through all of this, my onboard AC/97 works the same... it works with no choppy sound. I don't want to use my AC/97 as my main sound - I'd like to reserve that for my VoIP. I really woudl like to solve this, but am out of ideas for what could be the root cause of my choppy sound issue. Anyone have any ideas at all here? Anything I could try? C

KDE 3.4.2: Worth It!

Hi, In my previous response about my experience updating to KDE 3.4.2, I mentioned that Kat was integrated but not working. Well, I got it working correctly. It was easy, actually. I just launched the application (K menu -> Utilities -> Desktop -> Kat) and it detected that I had not yet configured it and initiated a set-up wizard. After going through that (and finding and installing antiword *), it started indexing and for the first time ever, indexed my entire publications directory (1,463 files, 154 folders, 503,883,195 bytes) without crashing. (*) The set-up wizard told me I didn't have antiword and hevea installed. They appear not to be available on the 9.3 DVD. I found antiword on <http://rpm.pbone.net/> (I used the 9.2 version, whose RPM dependencies were met on my 9.3 system). However, I've not yet found hevea. Can anybody tell me where I might find it? It's not on rpm.pbone.net and I looked at the Guru's RPM site, but it didn't seem to be there. Since there's no search function on that site, so I could well have overlooked it. I acquire various technical publications without reservation, but I've ceased to try to organize them. Finally, I can start to find things again! I've been wanting to use Kat for some time. cant start apache2

Don't know if it's suse related :-( but it's on a 9.0 comfig I use mediawiki (1.4), apache2,php (v? default) when I try to edit a wiki page, very frequently, I get a "application/x-httpd-php" can't cope with, write to disk or open? from thunderbird or mozilla looks like if the apache server sent the php code in place of the html page an idea? thanks jdd -- pour m'écrire, aller sur: http://www.dodin.net http://valerie.dodin.net http://arvamip.free.fr

missing dbus-1-x11 in 9.2 gnome supplementary packages

Hi All, I thought I 'd seen this addressed on the list not too long ago, but I've searched the archives and googled with no success. Does anyone know where the gnome supplementary package is for SuSE 9.2 that supplies dbus-1-x11? It seems I can't upgrade gnome-session to 2.11.1-5 without it. TIA and regards, - Carl

Problem burning backup PS2 iso using K3B

When I was on Windows I made backup ISOs of my PS2 games as the kids tend to wreck the DVDs. Root passwd gone

Hi, I wanted to change the file ownership of a directory in root, but by mistake I gave the following command # chown -R <username>: / but Ctrl-C'd after a few seconds, after realising what I have done. After this I haven't been able to login as root. So I followed the procedure at http://www.novell.com/coolsolutions/trench/15629.html (viz. put the first CD of SuSE, rescue system, modify the passwd and shadow files). After I logged in again as a normal user and tried to login as root, it was still asking me for the passwd. Then I again went into rescue system, and then mounted /dev/sda1 where the home is and then removed the x from the root line. Also I modified the shadow file so that root looke like this root:::: After this I again rebooted the system and tried to login, now when I give su, it says the following. $ su su: cannot set groups: Operation not permitted Now I am not able to login as root into my machine. KDE 3.4.2

Seems that KDE 3.4.2 is available from 2 days ago: http://www.kde.org/announcements/announce-3.4.2.php But not for SuSE? From now (since KDE 3.4.1) always I've seen available the new KDE versions for SUSE with 'apt-get', but this time I don't locate 3.4.2 in apt-get --and www.suse.com site too... but the new SuSE-Novell site is a mystery for me :( (Sorry for my english, I'm catalan from Majorca island) -- Benjamí http://weblog.bitassa.net .
