SSH server login delayed

Hi all, I hope somebody can help me with the following problem -- sorry for the lengthy explanation. I have a machine running SUSE 9.2 Pro in a large research lab. It has a unique IP address, but is not directly accessible from the outside world through the lab's firewall. Instead, the lab offers SSH gateways (running Debian 3.1) to which you can log in from outside, and from there you can ssh to machines in the lab. This is as much as I know about the lab's network structure. My machine also serves as a gateway between a small private subnet and the research lab network. Now I have the problem that if I want to log onto my machine from the lab's SSH gateway, it takes 30 seconds for the SSH server to respond and prompt for the password, which is quite annoying. If I log on from the private subnet, I get the password prompt immediately. If I log on from inside the lab's network, I get the immediate response as well. If I ping my machine from the SSH gateway, I get an immediate response. If I try to log onto a different Linux machine inside the lab's network from the SSH gateway (Redhat 7.3), I get an immediate response. So it looks like it's something between my machine's SSH server and the SSH gateway's SSH client. The problem is independent of the machine's firewall settings (the same with the SUSE firewall on or off). One hint might be that: If I log onto any other Linux machine from my Windows laptop (SSH Secure Shell 3.2.9), I get a popup window with a prompt saying "Enter Password". I type my password, and I'm there. For that SUSE machine though, I get a popup saying "Enter your authentication response" and a password field. I enter the password, and then another window pops up again saying "Enter your authentication response", and OK and cancel buttons. I first have to click OK, then I'm logged on. So maybe the server expects a different authentication mechanism and falls back to password after a while? But why does the login go quickly then from any machine other than the SSH gateway? Shouldn't I point Yast to some other installation source for repaired or newer version packages? I'd rather get the newer python version (2.4?) but I read somewhere that just removing the old version and installing a newer one might screw the system up somehow. So keeping the old version and installing the new one to home dir may be the best option? I'd prefer using Yast to do it (to be able to uninstall, if.. , and for dependencies), but I don't know how I could force Yast to install the stuff in my home dir. "Editing the build flags" or "using --prefix=$HOME/python24 as a configure flag" do not really say a lot to me. If I'll download a 2.4 version RPM for Suse how will I go about with changing the flags for Yast? And if one installs from source code with Yast by clicking the RPM when is the moment to wave the -prefix=$HOME/Python24 flag? The Suse manual (Admin guide / 4.3) sorta scares a newbie away from trying to fiddle with the parameters lest the skies fall down upon him to punish for showing such chutzpah. /DWM

mod_frontpage and Apache from SuSE

Hi all, I have installed mod_frontpage and changed /etc/sysconfig/apache2 to have it listed in the modules. Also edited /etc/httpd/mod_frontpage.conf and changed Disabled to Enabled. I am not sure what else I need to do to enable Frontpage extensions. Is there more that I need to get that does not come with SuSE by default? This server has SuSE 9.0 and is fully updated. SuSE vs. RH vs. BSD (Slightly OT)

Our local LUG is having a panel presentation (friendly debate) on SuSE vs. RH vs. BSD. I've been volunteered to be the SuSE presenter. I feel I've got good ammunition regarding SuSE's strong points and BSD's weak points, all based on personal experiences. But I really have next to no experience with RedHat. So, I'm looking for technical areas where I can contrast SuSE against RH. If anyone has migrated from RH to SuSE, it would be nice to know what drove that decision for example (movement in the opposite direction is also of interest!). cannot execute /etc/init.d/boot

Hi all, I don't know how, but my recently-upgraded SuSE 9.2 doesn't boot anymore. Here's the error: cannot execute "/etc/init.d/boot" cannot execute "/etc/init.d/rc" I tried a number of things: 1. Logged in rescue system, ran fsck.reiserfs on /dev/hda2, it found some errors. I let it fix them by running again with --rebuild-tree parameter. But my system won't boot again. 2. I used SuSE dvd's repair system tools: Automatic repair tried to install grub again; but grub installation failed. 3. Then i launched partition manager, and saw none of my partitions have mount points. Re-reading partition table brings mount points back: swap for hda1, /windows/C for hda3; except for hda2, which used to be /. Tried to edit but mount point section is disabled. 4. Back to rescue system, and tried fdisk on /dev/hda. I saw that /dev/hda2 is *not* signed as boot partition. I signed it as a boot partition. And nothing changed. Hope i'll receive some urgent assistance on here. Regards.

tomcat on port 80 (suse 9.1)

hi, does anyone have any idea how can i configure my suse 9.1 system to "support" tomcat running on port 80? it can run only if i am starting directly from /usr/share/tomcat/bin/startup.sh but if i am running thru the /etc/init.d/tomcat it is complaining about permissions. is this file permission problems? or missing permission to run 80 with "tomcat" user? thank you guys, z

Is there a way to see what I installed recently ? I keep having intermittent network problems and I'm wondering if something I installed caused it. Sorry for the sligtly OT post but the CNet news page http://news.com.com/Microsoft+may+offer+peek+at+SQL+Server+code/2100-7344_3… is displaying the page in Chinese for me. Just that page. Running SuSE 9.2 and Mozilla 1.7.2 (Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.7.2) Gecko/20040906) Any ideas why? Under WinXP and Mozilla it displays fine... Thanks, Mike
