After reading this file it's going to process this file and for example load some modules. When this message appears you could 'debug' a little bit by snooping around on the other virtual terminal's. I had the same problem but it appeared to be a kernel crash. I found this one one of the console's ( as I remember the fourth ). Regards Harry

su: cannot set groups: Operation not permitted, I blew it

I meant to change permissions on a directory called /installroot but I change the permissions on the /etc directory to a user which is not root. Now, when I "su -" I get the fallowing. su: cannot set groups: Operation not permitted gtorres@nvlnxt23:/etc> chown root passwd chown: changing ownership of `passwd': Operation not permitted I have it all backed up but if I try to overwrite /etc I don't think it will go. Any thoughts and thank you!

If so, LVS has a good reputation, but I don't know if it handles LDAP or not. If you want to consider making serverA a 2-node HA cluster, you could post your question on Linux-HA. php - session controls

I want to use sessions with Apache2/php4/SUSE 9.2. session_start() is not defined. Looking at the output of phpinfo(), php was compiled with '--disable-session'. I assume that is the problem? (I'm not a php programmer.) Is there a simple way for me to enable sessions? Maybe get a different rpm somewhere? Thanks Greg -- Greg Freemyer

Decent color laser printer

I don't know if anyone out there is looking for a good color laser printer, but my wife and I found one (finally) - a Xerox Phaser 6100. While its driver is not shipped with SuSE Linux 9.2, the included CD automatically launched a setup utility for the installation of the driver and a printer configuration tool. We did get a little thrown off course by the utility when, upon attempting to "Add Printer," we were presented with a login box (I was already running the utility as root). After several failed attempts to log in with root's password (kept getting a message saying "Authentication failed"), I checked the CUPS error log and realized it was looking for a CUPS password for root - I never even knew CUPS could have its own passwd file. I simply ran the 'lppasswd -a root' command, set a password, and it worked great! After having used Linux for over seven years, it's nice to see manufacturers _finally_ shipping hardware with installation utilities for Linux! - Thomas Long -- Using SuSE Linux

list of printers disappearing from CUPS client printer list

Hello, On a LAN in a remote office I have setup up a printserver where the printers are installed locally, and I have told CUPS to be a server. All the client computers (about 30 of them) on the LAN are running SuSE 9.0 with CUPS installed, and CUPS automatically picked up the offered print queues on the client computers - very nice, very convenient. However the following problem keeps occuring: (I'm the helpdesk BTW, in a remote office) A user will come in to work, go to print (we print through the standard kprinter dialog box from KDE and QT apps), then report to me that there are no printers in the list. By the time I log in via ssh -X, open kate, and try to print a test page, all the printers are automatically back in the list. I can't figure out what causes the printers to "fall off" the browse list (if I may call it that). I would guess that it's some sort of network or DNS timeout, or some service "going to sleep", but I don't know what and we are not having any other problems with the network (we use NFS and SSH constantly, so I think we would notice network problems). The problem is recurring but not constand, consistent or confined to any 1 client computer. I checked the logs and there is nothing in them related to what printers are/are not in the queue. Does anyone have an idea how I can track this problem? Or keep the printer list refreshed? Shouldn't I point Yast to some other installation source for repaired or newer version packages? I'd rather get the newer python version (2.4?) but I read somewhere that just removing the old version and installing a newer one might screw the system up somehow. So keeping the old version and installing the new one to home dir may be the best option? I'd prefer using Yast to do it (to be able to uninstall, if.. , and for dependencies), but I don't know how I could force Yast to install the stuff in my home dir. "Editing the build flags" or "using --prefix=$HOME/python24 as a configure flag" do not really say a lot to me. If I'll download a 2.4 version RPM for Suse how will I go about with changing the flags for Yast? And if one installs from source code with Yast by clicking the RPM when is the moment to wave the -prefix=$HOME/Python24 flag? The Suse manual (Admin guide / 4.3) sorta scares a newbie away from trying to fiddle with the parameters lest the skies fall down upon him to punish for showing such chutzpah. /DWM

place for final commands -- nfs mounts

Hello, I have an issue where after a reboot the nfs mounts aren't mounted even though they are supposed to be permanent. To get around that I want to execute the mount command after everything is loaded during boot up, but before the login prompt. I tried boot.local, but that didn't work. Any ideas? Thank you, James
