Installing SuSE 9.2 onto Adaptec HostRaid

Hi guys, I'm trying to install 9.2 onto a hardware raid setup. The RAID controller is an Adaptec 39320A and I've got two 74GB SCSI disks in a RAID 1 setup. The problem is - SuSE doesn't even see the hard drives! I checked the modules loaded by the Kernel and it had what seemed to be the appropriate modules loaded. Whether they are properly configured or not is another questions. I've googled for an answer on this and haven't really found one - any gurus out there know how to do this? Regards, Angus Beath

System clock running 3x real time

Hi I've just got a HP Compaq nx9105 PG729EA laptop with an AMD Athlon 64 3400+ processor. nice... Except the system clock is running 3x realtime, so 5 minutes after is turned on it's 10 minutes ahead of time.. Besides the computer is almost impossible to use because everything it's running 3x as fast including keyboard repeats.. Try enter a password when the keyboard repeat kicks in immediately.... None of the "howto install Linux on nx9105" I could find on the internet describes this problem, but apparently they are all writing for versions of the laptops with 3000+ or less processors. This version is one of two with the 64 bit instructions enabled in the processor.. I've searched the internet and only found three posts about this problem: http://www.ussg.iu.edu/hypermail/linux/kernel/0408.2/2102.html http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-270101-highlight-system+clock.html http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-288892-highlight-system+clock.html But the first dies without answer.. The second ends with an advise to use ntpd to "slow-down" the clock... In the third the advise is not use freq-scaling or to recompile the kernel without rtc. The questionar writes back that after upgrading the kernel-source and recompile (on a gentoo) it works for him... I've tried the same on SuSE: Grab the latest kernel-source from online_update and remove freq-scaling and recompiling - didn't work... Couldn't find a parameter in xconfig to disable rtc!!! Does anyone have any experience with SuSE and the larger HP nx9105 or HP Pavillon r3000 or zx5000v which apparently is almost identical???? Does anyone know if there is any AMD Athlon 64 fixes in the kernel which is not in 2.6.8-24.11 from SuSE??? Latest SuSE 9.1 Kernel Update vs. Nvidia

Hi, I just installed the latest kernel update and am having trouble with Nvidia. According to the note that was displayed with the kernel update I went to runlevel 3 (text mode) and installed the update via the text-mode version of Yast. All seemed to go well and I rebooted to runlevel 3 in order to do the following... cd /usr/src/linux make cloneconfig make prepare-all nvidia-installer --update That reported that the Nvidia driver was already installed so I rebooted to runlevel 5. This failed. I used text-mode Yast to disable 3D acceleration and was then able to get to runlevel 5 OK. But I want my 3D acceleration! Now, when trying to use Yast to re-enable 3D acceleration I run into a problem. Yast will not allow me to select 3D acceleration. When I select "Change" from Yast's "Desktop Settings -> Graphical Desktop Environment" it simply grays-out the selection for a few seconds then does nothing. I tried to re-run nvidia-installer but it is no longer there! # locate nvidia-installer /usr/bin/nvidia-installer /usr/bin/tiny-nvidia-installer /var/log/nvidia-installer.log # ls /usr/bin/nvidia-installer /bin/ls: /usr/bin/nvidia-installer: No such file or directory Can anyone set me straight? -- Robert C. Ability to display output to multiple screens

I got a SuSe 9.2 Pro system put in the computer lab of my sons grammer school (grades 1-8). The teacher is truly excited ( I built an airplane case using the Lubic kit (http://www.aerocool.com.tw/aerocool-files-v3/lubic/gallery/airplane.htm) which has the kids interested as well). She is looking at incorporating a number of tools into the classes. XEphem and Kverbos are the first apps she is looking at. As an aside, she mentioned she is looking for a tool that will display what she has on her screen to others in the lab. The lab is primarily Windows XP. She is not opposed to running Linux in some fashion. Question - is there a tool which will, in a classroom environment, display teacher directed windows out to systems in a lab area? Since the programs she uses are most likely Windows XP-based, I am thinking this would be a three phase transition: 1. Display from/to Windows XP machines, 2. Then display from the SuSe machine to Windows XP systems, and then 3. Display from a SuSe system to LiveCD-based Linux distros (such as Knoppix/Kanotix). Any ideas on applications I can look at? Rich -- Remember, all Windows-based machines are, by definition, fault tolerant. They run Windows don't they?!?!?!?

Backup using "mount -t smbfs..."

I have small script doing backup every week. It has worked nicely, but for a few weeks it suddenly doesn't work. -- #!/bin/bash tobackup="/etc .........." kp=$(date +%e-%m-%Y) mount -t smbfs -o username=xxx,password=yyy '\\server2\backup' '/var/local/backup' tar -czPf /var/local/backup/backup-server1-$kp.tar.gz $tobackup umount '/var/local/backup' -- It creates backup file in server1, but does not copy it to server2. I haven't changed anything in servers configuration I think. When I enter manually: "mount -t smbfs -o username=xxx,password=yyy //server2/backup /var/local/backup" it says: 10217: tree connect failed: ERRDOS - ERRnosuchshare (You specified an invalid share name) SMB connection failed When I use root & root's password, it mounts nicely. What could be the reason? I have used this script nicely for months.

Boot 9.2 Live from LSI SCSI

When I try to boot my 9.2 system from the 9.2 Live CD on LSI21002 (sym53c8xx), it fails with: cdrom: open failed init: Cannot find the CD I was booted from - doh ! Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init! Does anyone know if the 9.2 live CD can be made to boot from LSI SCSI CD with some optional kernel parameter? I know the CD is OK, because it boots other systems with IDE CD. The Knoppix CD has a similar boot failure problem, unable to find its own filesystem.
