Bash Q: how to keep a script from failing when a var is undef or empty

Hello, One thing I run into all the time with bash script is: I get a script that works perfectly when every thing is right, and is supposted to aleart me when something is wrong - often bashed on whether or not a particular var says something. But often the script fails because bash trips out over trying to test an empty var. For example: #!/bin/sh TAPESTATE=`mt -f /dev/st0 status | head -2 |tail -1 | cut -d " " -f4` if [ ${TAPESTATE} == "512" ]; then READY="yes" else READY="no" && echo "No tape in oe1 tape drive" | mail -s "Oe1 tape error" jw(a)mailsw.com fi if [ ${READY} == "yes" ]; then tar cplvf /dev/st0 -T /etc/mcmurray_backup.lst || echo "Tar failed during oe1 tape backup job" | mail -s "Oe1 backup job tar error" jw(a)mailsw.com else echo "Script failure in oe1 tar backup job" | mail -s "Oe1 backup job - error in script" jw(a)mailsw.com exit 1 fi As long as there's a tape in the tape drive it works out fine, but when there's not a tape, "mt -f /dev/st0 status" give the response: mt: /dev/st0: No medium found And apparently sends it to sterr so that $TAPESTATE remains empty (null). Now instead of just calmly passing on to the next section: else READY="no" && echo "No tape in oe1 tape drive" Bash give a response like this: usr/local/sbin/tape_bakup.sh: line 5: [: ==: unary operator expected And I've tried eq also. Cups problem

Hi, I've been running Cups + Samba3 on a SuSE 8.2 box for quite some time now. The last few weeks I've been having big problems with the printing part of the server. One of the problems I'm having now is that gs seems to hang on select documents - both wordfiles, pdfs and others. This isn't a satisfactory situation, and I need some tips on how to debug and /or solve this problem. How to install only particular module - pwc for instance

Hi, I've compiled modules for Suse kernel with pwc being among them. But I don't want to go into adventure with "make modules install", but would like only to install pwc module. 1. way would be to copy by hand, but don't know where and what files ? 2. there must be some "make modules install pwc" command ? Help with KDE Menu - Switch User is missing

The Kmenu option to Switch User is missing. Not sure when it happened, about 3 weeks ago. I've looked in Menu Editor but have not found the "actions"section of the menu. There was a post in suse-kde about this same problem, but it related to errors in /var/log/messages with problems on that system writing to /var/run/xdmctl/xdmctl. I don't have that error message. I'm running suse 8.2 with kde 3.2.3. On a similar but less important issue, somewhere in my several upgrades of kde, the menu items have added the suse & suse work menu up into the kde menu. I still have the suse menu button and suse work menu button where they should be. These old original suse & suse work menus seem to now be menu options up among the kde menu items. I tried changing a setting in kde about this, but no change. Additionally there is a Lost & found item that contains MANY items, most of which look like screen savers, but not all, e.g. tea timer, moonphase etc. Any help would be appreciated. Jim Flanagan

"alberto-g" <alberto-g(a)inventati.org>: There is definitely something wrong with KDE in Suse. Even the smallest apps open in 5 seconds. If I try the same in Knoppix (kernel 2.6, KDE 3.2) it takes 1 second, on the same hardware. Other non-KDE apps start in no time. I experienced the same behaviour on different PCs. If you search a little you will find many people complaining about this. Everybody at this point suggests to use a lighter WM.
