Hi. I'm trying to backup our lan /home directory (20 boxes, 1 NIS server, all 9.1) to dvd. I can tar and gzip it from 6.4Gb to 4.4Gb. Today. Tomorrow a smaller /home may crush down to greater than the magical 4.7Gb. Is there a way to estimate the final .tar.gz size without having to wait the hours it takes to actually do it? Or WHY. I can't always be there to change media and the lan has to be quiet. Cheers, Steve.

I have 3.0.7-1 and cups happily playing together on a 9.0 box that should be very close to what you are doing. If I recall, I did have to update: libsmbclient3-3.0.7-1.i586.rpm libsmbclient3-devel-3.0.7-1.i586.rpm I did the rpm -Uvh lib* before doing the rpm -Uvh sam* samba3-python-3.0.7-1.i586.rpm samba3-vscan-0.3.5-1.i586.rpm samba3-winbind-3.0.7-1.i586.rpm samba3-3.0.7-1.i586.rpm samba3-client-3.0.7-1.i586.rpm samba3-doc-3.0.7-1.i586.rpm samba3-pdb-3.0.7-1.i586.rpm all is working fine here. Hacking Question

Dear all, I have detected recently some users trying to gain access on my server via ssh. I have their IPs and found the servers that these users have access from. I have sent e-mail to the abuse e-mail addresses that they advertise but I have not received a single reply for the longest time now. Can someone tell me if there is a higher authority whom I can contact about this issue since the system admins which I send e-mail to, do not even ignoledge me?? Thank you Chris

On ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/update/ there is a folder called '9.2' I haven't seen this anywhere else. What's up?

I want to see the size of a directory. That's the directory and all its contents as a single number of bytes. It seems quite basic but man, info and google/linux have given me nothing. Is it possible?

Bash Q: how to keep a script from failing when a var is undef or empty

Hello, One thing I run into all the time with bash script is: I get a script that works perfectly when every thing is right, and is supposted to aleart me when something is wrong - often bashed on whether or not a particular var says something. But often the script fails because bash trips out over trying to test an empty var. For example: #!/bin/sh TAPESTATE=`mt -f /dev/st0 status | head -2 |tail -1 | cut -d " " -f4` if [ ${TAPESTATE} == "512" ]; then READY="yes" else READY="no" && echo "No tape in oe1 tape drive" | mail -s "Oe1 tape error" jw(a)mailsw.com fi if [ ${READY} == "yes" ]; then tar cplvf /dev/st0 -T /etc/mcmurray_backup.lst || echo "Tar failed during oe1 tape backup job" | mail -s "Oe1 backup job tar error" jw(a)mailsw.com else echo "Script failure in oe1 tar backup job" | mail -s "Oe1 backup job - error in script" jw(a)mailsw.com exit 1 fi As long as there's a tape in the tape drive it works out fine, but when there's not a tape, "mt -f /dev/st0 status" give the response: mt: /dev/st0: No medium found And apparently sends it to sterr so that $TAPESTATE remains empty (null). Now instead of just calmly passing on to the next section: else READY="no" && echo "No tape in oe1 tape drive" Bash give a response like this: usr/local/sbin/tape_bakup.sh: line 5: [: ==: unary operator expected And I've tried eq also.
