Anyway. At least some of the results in your tests don't look right when comparing the KDE results to the GNOME results. I'd believe KWrite needing double the amount GEdit needs, or even tripple, but 5 times longer seems wrong. The same way KWrite should not need 15 seconds if Konqueror needs only 2 (although this must be preloaded Konqueror instance). I have an old K6/188 available, which should have rougly just a third of the power of your machine, and I run KDE on it from time to time. I don't remember the times exactly, it is certainly sluggish, but at least KDE startup time is definitely less than 80 seconds, the other times may be probably roughly the same, perhaps slower, but I doubt it'd be three times slower than your numbers. Which means there's probably something wrong with the setup. I recently spent some time extensively profiling KDE startup, I'm about to finish updating the KDE performance tips, and I'll publish them shortly. I suggest you check them after they're announced, maybe you'll find the reason for your slowness. And no, performance has not been forgotten. If yes, I wouldn't have done the profiling, and others would have done the various optimizations either. It's generally perceived that KDE performance has been constantly improving with each new release. However working on optimizations is a tedious and time-consuming work, and moreover you cannot expect KDE to run acceptably on very old hardware like my K6 or to match the performance of old software developed for such hardware. PS: Oh, and yes, the very first tip in the tips will be getting a fast machine. re-detecting USB flash drive

After removing my flash drive, if I reinsert it my system fails to find it. Is there a way of getting my system to rescan the USB ports, without doing a reboot? TIA Eddie

9.1 Gnome Laptop shutdown

when using Gnome the laptop will not automatically power down, the system seems to log off and start the shutdown process but halts when trying /etc/init.d/halt.local However when using KDE and shutting down it seems to ok, and advice or where to find info? The acp=off and other one :) seems to be there already in the config... G.

iptables Stressful?

OS: SuSE 9.1 (Fully patched) WE are trying to run two bridging firewalls using 9.1 and Shorewall but the systems keep dying. They apparently just crash with nothing in the syslogs or displayed on the console. We are filtering packets for a T1 running at 1/2 to 3/4 capacity. We have tried both Athlons and Pentiums with up to 1Gb RAM and running nothing else. The only system to stand up is an old 750 MHz Athlon with 512Mb RAM and most logging turned off. (It did go down when we were logging packets during a heavy syn flood attack but has stayed up with logging turned off.) The only difference between the two installations is the 750Mhz Athlon system has had all graphical stuff stripped out. It was originally installed with minimal KDE graphics but I have removed all that including X11 (as opposed to installing from scratch without the graphical stuff). 1. Could the presence of the graphical subsystems somehow cause a problem like this? 2. Is there someway to make the OS record its final moments before crashing? I am used to Unix which basically dumped a memory image to the dump device which we had an option of saving on reboot. Once saved, we could then inspect the various kernel data structures including an in memory "panic" message log which usually recorded quite a bit of useful information. Is there a similar faciltiy available in Linux? Meanwhile, I am going to reinstall minimal systems on two Athlon 2.5Ghz systems (all new hardware) and see if that makes a difference. SuSEconfig error

When /sbin/SuSEconfig runs, I am getting the following error message: "will not give away s-bits on an insecure path" in reference to various gnome games. This is after the latest upgrade of ulb-gnome. Does this matter and do I need to do anything to fix it? Not that I play any of the games involved..... Thanks. Has anyone had a good experience using this with SuSE 9.1? I found this item on sale at buy.com for $49.99 after a $30.00 rebate. I want to make sure I'll be able to use it on my SuSE linux box before I purchase it.
