SATA - has anyone succeeded in installing

Hi all, Has anyone succeeded in installing any distro of linux (out of the box, with no mods)on a machine with a SATA drive. I have a PC with a Chaintech Zenith Nforce mainboard with an 80GB SATA Maxtor HDD on a Promise Fasttrak 376 RAID interface configured as a 1+0 stripe. I have tried SuSE 9.0, Fedora Core and Mandrake 9.2 all without success. If anyone has achieved success, I'd like to know how it was done. Who's messing with the permissions?

The permissions on my /var/log/messages file keep getting reset to "-rw-r-----" (so that ordinary users can't read it) even though I've set the PERMISSION_SECURITY variable in /etc/sysconfig (via Yast2) to "here local" and included the line /var/log/messages root.root 744 in /etc/permissions.here. (/etc/permissions.local has no uncommented lines.) So what program is changing the permissions on me? And when more than one permissions file is specified in PERMISSION_SECURITY, how do the different files interact? The comments in /etc/permissions don't help with this. Paul Abrahams

What would the replacemnet for Windows Media Player be?? I am looking for something that will play the *.asf streaming audio and I thought there was something in 9Pro that did. Now, I cannot seem to find it. ...CH

Rember Yast in the old days?

Anybody recall how yast used to allow you to brows an arbitrary file structure looking at rpms? It would tell you if the rpm you were looking at was installed, new than an installed rpm, etc. I believe it would also resolve (or at least indicate) conflicts and dependencies to some extent. That was really nice to have. I expected them to put it back in after they got the QT wrapper finished. It still seems to be missing. There is an option to import a list of rpms from disk, but I have no idea how to form that list. Has anybody worked with this feature? STH

Does anyone know how to do this? What version of suse are you using? With 8.2 you can configure it as previous posters have said, and it'll just work. If its 9 then theres a bit of messing involved. If you have any trouble obtaining an IP address for the card, but you can scan for and see access points with iwlist scan then you might try the following which worked with my cisco aironet. Using a terminal switch to root and goto /etc/sysconfig/network and after configuring the card with its essid, wep key and so on move the config file ifcfg-pcmcia-wlan0 to ifcfg-eth1. Then shutdown both interfaces with 'ifdown eth0' and 'ifdown eth1', and then bring up the wireless interface eth1 with 'ifup eth1'. You should then see dhcpcd obtaining an IP address. Regards, Ben

As you have lost yours perhaps it would be an idea for you to create a new floppy device by RIGHT clicking on the normal user desktop and creating a new floppy icon. I would assume the device properties to still be /dev/fd0. The permissions are -740 and don't forget to make the owner the normal user and the group users. Any comments on the icon creation from the more experienced users? I think i will buy IBM Thinkpad R40. For what i've read it is more stable with linux then R40e.
