YaST in uml

Hi there, I'm trying to run YaST in user-mode Linux on 9.0 installation and it just hangs on y2base consuming ~6% of CPU whenever I try to access Install/Remove Packages or Online Update. This is ncurses version of yast. I tried running it both on console (serial emulation in uml) and over ssh connection. I can change Source of Installation and I actually tried both NFS and a local directory (actually a manually NFS mounted directory exported from the host). If I press Ctrl-C it just gets back to the command prompt. Manual installation of packages with rpm command from the same location (NFS mount) works fine. I also tried attaching strace to the y2base process but it reports no system calls (or this is not possible in uml?) Anybody has any clues what y2base is doing and what causes it to hang? Which directory?

Yesterday I downloaded and installed Mozilla 1.6. It works perfectly and I'm pleased so far. The program currently resides in my home directory. I have the feeling (don't know why) that this isn't a good idea. So my newbie question: is there a specific directory where programs such as Mozilla should be stored after installation? Something tells me that there is some kind of convention or protocol in Linux as to where folders from new installations should reside. I would appreciate knowing if this is true, and why it might be true. Rem

could not start kdeinit

I recently updated via synaptic to kde 3.1.5 and now have this in a gray box whenever I log on. I can still log on after I ack the box. How do I get this to not pop up. TIA David

DHCP problems using cable modem

Just made the leap to a cable modem through Earthlink (installed by Time Warner Cable...the guy told me it's the same as RoadRunner). Anyway, it's working fine for my Windoze laptop with DHCP. Trying to get my SuSE 8.1 Professional box running as well (in terms of a network connection via eth0 through the cable modem). I know the hardware is working fine because I have ftp'ed (in my home network) to and from the Linux box (via the Windoze laptop) many times on eth0 (using the same cables). When I do an "ifup eth0" I get the following message: "Starting DHCP Client Daemon on eth0... . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . no IP address yet... backgrounding" Then if I try to do a ping, I get: "connect: Network is unreachable" Any help would be greatly appreciated Thoughts of what's wrong--but no idea really: 1)DNS 2)DHCP configured wrong 3)Firewall on my machine is causing problems Here's what I see if I do an ifconfig: eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx [replaced #'s for x's]UP BROADCAST NOTRAILERS RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:1034 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:6 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:100 RX bytes:67167 (65.5 Kb) TX bytes:3564 (3.4 Kb) Interrupt:18 Base address:0xddc0 Memory:fe9e0000-0 Then something similar for lo (Local Loopback). cannot remove file

Accessing a floppy disk

Hi all, Just recently tried to export some documentation onto a floppy disk so that I could use it on another PC. However I was unable to write it to the floppy. I can remember that from my Mandrake days the floppy was /mnt/floppy but when I when into a Konqueror window and navigated to the directory it didn't exist. I explored a little and only saw a fd under /dev but under / I saw a /media/floppy owned by root. Seeing the ownershipmade me try and copy the files using a root login but alas it did not help. The ?relevant? entries in my fstab file is below for help + explanation: devpts /dev/pts devpts mode=0620,gid=5 0 0 /dev/cdrom /media/cdrom auto ro,noauto,user,exec 0 0 /dev/fd0 /media/floppy auto noauto,user,sync 0 0 Should I change the mount point from media/floppy to /mnt/floppy or add another entry into the file?
