Wierd apt responses on SuSE 8.1

I've seen this twice and it seems very odd. Can anyone explain why a package would have a dependency on an earlier build of the same package? rogue:/home/jlemay/ethereal-0.9.11 # apt-get install ethereal Reading Package Lists... Need to get 0B/3581kB of archives. After unpacking 12.1MB will be used. hi all, I've got c:\winXP,d:\data and suse 8.1 on my system, my question is how to make ordinary user can rw on my FAT32 fs and r on my NTFS fs ? Umax 2200

My Umax 2200 scanner seems to be dragging on the glass from the inside. Does anyone have alignment instructions to get this set up right again? It's a SCSI scanner, which you can't buy anymore (except for $1000) and my computer (1995 version) does not accept a usb card-- I've tried. So I have to get the Umax working. I need mechanical alignment instructions, and distances. I have a dial caliper that I can use to set the mechanical distances, etc. (I hope.) Thanx all. --doug

Starting Cups (Was Landscape not working)

Earlier this week, I posted a problem with printing landscape. I was told that I needed to install Cups 1.1.18, which I've done as per http://sdb.suse.de/sdb/en/html/jsmeix_print-cups-testversion-81.html Yast2 didn't seem to have any problems with any of the parts of this, but it appears that my new Cups isn't running. I'm assuming that I simply need to start it, but I'm not seeing how to do this. What step did I leave out? tia -- Penguins eat butterflies, don't they?

Synchronization Problem with NTP

Dear all, I am using some SuSE 8.0 PRO boxes and have configured xntpd to synchronize with a couple of time servers on all of them. However, after the time changed on Sunday, none of the boxes seemed to synchronize its clock. For troubleshooting I stopped xntpd, and I ran <ntpdate ntp2.ja.net>, which is supposed to force the system clock to synchronize with the server (no?). This didn't change anything, and the clocks are still showing 'winter time'. After that, I am also doubting on the accuracy of their synchronization. Does anyone know tips and tricks for this issue?
