For all those interested in Kontact here is your site: http://kontact.org/ Hopefully it will be included with SuSE's regular KDE offerings as it is coming along nicely. I had mentioned this to Steven Hatton in another mail, so thought I would make it a separate thread for others interested in it. I'll just let you visit the site rather than me trying to tell you about it, but I will say this, it works very well on my system and is worth taking a look at, if you want or need an integrated program of this type. As I mentioned earlier it also provides you the latest cvs version of KMail with some nice new features like the spell checking and IMAP support. I have a suitable rpm file already compiled for 8.1 and i686 optimized. Private mail me if you are interested. Have a look! But now QT Assistant's fonts are broken!

I have everything related to Gideon, KMail, etc., working with my KDE and QT, but now the one thing that was working is broken. The QT Assistant now displays boxes where the fonts should be. I have a backup install of qt that works. I'm betting if I download the additional QT stuff and compile it, it will work. At this point what I want to know is what is causing this? There's something about the way SuSE compiled these bits. I used the same RPMs they provide and compiled them here to create a working install of what was broken in their bits. This is weird. STH

Solved. I think. . . There's a quark lookalike in beta 0.8 called Scribus. Development seems fast and furious. 0.9 is due next week. And yes. It lets you place and position textboxes with all the Writer features, but also handles a wider range of pictures better than Quark XPress and handles font effects, rotation, scaling, etc. The main limitation would be that a drawing only handles one page, though that could be overcome simply by inserting drawing features in Writer. Pesumably the (ICT?) syllabus describes objectives so that you could check whether these could be covered by the package. Given that you can teach Visual Basic in GCSE as if it were a programming language, it seems reasonable to use StarOffice as if it were a desktop publishing package. Also, the educational licence is, I believe, free. -- JDL

Router/IPChains/named problems - update#1

Hi list, using a small suse 7.0 pro router here, and I am a bit puzzled and would like to hear your ideas: I had the router work so that when I entered ping www.gmx.de the router isdn-dialled out and got into the internet, resolving the address. Now I have changed something which I do not remember, and when I enter the same command, the router does no more dial out even though ippp0 is configured to auto dial mode as before. (The same command now results in: Name of service not known. Resource temp. unavailable Host name lookup failure) named says it is running (brings back "OK" on status request (/etc/rc.d/named status)) The joke is that everything works, when I manually dial out using isdnctrl dial ippp0 - I can then even use the basic routing using ipchains from a windoze computer. I could encircle the problem even further: A ping to my DNS here (my ISP's) results in network is unreachable - only because the computer does not dial out. (When I do isdnctrl dial ippp0 first, and ping THEN, it works) But it does not work AUTOMATICALLY as it is supposed to. Where shall I start searching? Carlos's analysis, based on your data, is you probably have a corrupted file.
