Using tar to create multi-volume archives

I've got about 3 gig's of music files I'd like to back up in preparation for doing a fresh install of 8.2. I read the man page, but came away still confused. My goal was 650mb (CD size) archives, I used this command: nqs@Miverna:~> tar -c -L=614400 *.ogg, *.mp3 music.tar But get: tar: =614400: Invalid tape length Try `tar --help' for more information. and --help didn't What am I doing wrong, and how do I correct it? how to see passwords

I'm root on our lan with around 50 users. How can I get a list of their passwords? Also, how tolerant are other admins to users who have forgotten their password? At the moment all I can do is allocate them a new password :-( SuSE 8.1 server and clients. BTW My error. I allowed NIS to let passwords be changed. Never again. Thanks, Steve.

I've screwed up badly...please help.

Ok. I have really big issue. I had an Asus A7V that had a Promise IDE raid controller on it. I had both my hard drives on it and the CDROM's on the regular ATA controller. I've switched to a P4PE board that doesn't have a Promise or any other raid controller on it. I think my /dev/ directory is frelled up because I can't set dma mode to either hda or hdb because the devices are configured as if they were cdrom's and not hd's. I say this because of this.. Where the first hd is now: brw-rw---- 1 root disk 3, 0 Apr 12 2002 /dev/hda Where the first hd was: brw-rw---- 1 root disk 33, 0 Apr 12 2002 /dev/hde Notice that hda has a 3, and hde has the 33, in the lines above. I think I need to remake (if that's the correct term) the devices hda and hdb so that I can enable DMA mode. Not using DMA mode is frelling painful..oh God is it painful. So if anyone can help a poor dumbass out and help me fix this. I would be eternally grateful. 1GB memory gives problematic installation of SuSE 8.1

Having more than 768MB of RAM makes the screen go blank during a graphical install, forcing me to do a textual install. I've got a Radeon 9500 Pro, which is not recognized by sax2 (it's a brand new card), but trying to configure the graphics as a VESA card using framebuffer gives following error from sax : Could not open /dev/apm_bios (device not found). Similar problem for a GeForce 4 card. Found a solution in Mandrake Forums : use mem=768MB http://www.mandrakeclub.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=Splatt_Forum&file=v… The ati driver (from ATI) is still flaky in 3D mode, though. Cheers Sigfred PS A bit miffed having a kernel denoted 2.4.19-4GB that can't even handle 1GB. This 'Could not open /dev/apm_bios' really threw me off track, thinking it could be bios problems with my motherboard (though Redhat handels it quite well) due to it beeing brand new.

Strange User problem

...will us poor unemployed 8.1 users be able to upgrade via FTP? How about if we just want to get bits of 8.2, like the new OpenOffice.org version and the new KDE? Can we do that? (I know 8.2 isn't out yet, except for the beta testers, but folks who went from 8.0 to 8.1 can chime in with what they think likely to happen...)

nvidia drivers hosed up system - "no screens found" error

I installed the SuSE 8.1 rpm's from nvidia for their latest (4349) drivers and I'm pretty much hosed. Upon restarting X it would try and try to find a config it liked, but to no avail and eventually the machine would hang. I tried rerunning SaX2 and it would get as far as the SaX2 config screen - but no dialog asking me to accept/change - and it would exit. No problem I figured, I'd just reinstall 4191 which has been running fine here for a while. Well, I uninstalled the two new RPM's and installed the two old ones and X and SaX2 had the same behaviour. So I got desperate. I uninstalled the nvidia drivers again and used apt to retrieve and install XFree86 4.3. I ran SaX2 and it asked me to install the nvidia glx/kernel drivers again, which I did (using the 4349 versions), and reran SaX2. SaX2 would actually exit with an error now (new version of SaX2 I believe came down with XFree86 4.3). I uninstalled the 4349 drivers and reinstalled the 4191 drivers and tried again - same result. The "key" error seems to be in the SaX.log file that SaX2 tells me to check out: gambit:~ # tail /var/log/SaX.log Fatal server error: no screens found When reporting a problem related to a server crash, please send the full server output, not just the last messages. This can be found in the log file "/var/log/XFree86.0.0.log". Please report problems to http:/www.suse.de/feedback. I know I've seen this error before, but I have no idea how to track down the root cause. Could anyone provide any pointers on how I can get my system back up and running?
