Monitor refresh problem

Hi all, It snowed here yesterday morning. Writing from Ipswich, UK. Life's first snow for someone from a tropical climate can be a little exhilarating experience. Both me and my wife had a good time in the morning. For nearly five whole minutes. We had to go to work :-( However, here is a problem which is more like a five-day trouble to me. I have an IIyama 21" monitor [Visionmaster Pro502]. Refresh rates for this are 27-110 Hor and 50-120 Vert and it can do upto 100Hz at 1024x768. But this would have been a waste, so I tried to get something like 1400x1050 from it. With 0.28 mm dot pitch, this was the combination where physical limitations of the monitor would have closely matched the pixel size - and hence I would have been able to get the highest pixel count - without losing too much unnecessarily on contrast. The pixel size would have co-incided with the physically supported dot pitch. However, this is where the trouble started with my dual-boot system. In both windows and Linux, 1024x768 mode works fine at 100Hz. However, anywhere above 1024x768, I get 60Hz as the refresh rate. Not acceptable. When I manually set the refresh rate in Win98SE, although I am told that the card is sending 100Hz signal, I always get a pathetic display of 60Hz [this can be confirmed from the monitor's own menu]. No matter what settings I give for refresh, I always get a lousy refresh from Windows. Never mind. So I go to SuSE and faithfully replace the monitor's specs in my XF86Config. Out goes the old Samsung 55E and enter IIyama refresh rates. Officially it is supposed to be able to do 1600x1200 at 75 MHz and 1280x1024 at 85 Hz and I know from experience that it works at 100Hz for lower res. I start X. After a little bit of pain, I see 60 Hz. No matter what res, I see 60 Hz. Sax used to hang my system bad, so I generated a configfile from xf86config and used other entries from my old XF86Config file [to get all smart detection by SaX2 in place]. So here, all else is fine. Ball mouse works fine. Keyboard refresh rates are OK. And in the end, the refresh is still bad :-( I remember that I had to configure my Nvidia card as generic nvidia card while working with xf86config. But later I had enabled use of OpenGL and loading of nvidia.o module, which was on my system for a while now. GL applications were working fine, including gears, so we knew that nvidia.o was loaded. The log of X server tells that many modes are rejected, because of graphics card's memory bandwidth being too less. I kow that my GeForce2 MX [on board Asus A7N266 VM, sharing DDR RAM for video purposes] is fast enough. Should there be a problem? So I have the following info. * Card : Memory bandwidth on card 1.3 GHz at least. [Can be 2.7 GHz but not sure] * Card : Pixel clock on card = 350 MHz [= RAMDAC I think] * Card : Vert frequency = 60-85 Hz * Card : Controller clock speed = 175 MHz * Monitor : Video bandwidth = 240 MHz dot clock * Monitor : refresh rates 27-110 KHz horiz and 50-120 Hz vert. And the following questions : * The graphics card's clock is probably not being utilized to the fullest. How can I specify the clock speed for the graphics card in XF86Config? So that it does not reject modes for 1600x1200 or 1400x1050 for refresh rates higher than 60 Hz. * Another person on the net faced similar problem but they were all windows people and were either not reachable, or did not care to investigate deep enough. For my multisync monitor, I feel that it may be the card at this time. May be there is something [a lot of things] that sax2 does which xf86config can not. Can anyone tell me? Linux Karaoke Software?

Two questions really: 1) What software do you know of that will read CDG discs under Linux [I have no discs at the moment to try :(] and will allow the normal "karaoke" function of such discs? 2) How can I create a CDG disk using OurFavouriteTools? :) What is required to get an mp3 [shall we say] beefed up with timed lyrics and burnt to a suitable CDR? What format *is* the disc? Can it be done? Any thoughts about this on a SuSE 8.2 / soon to be 9.0 I hope machine :) Thank you for your time. Happy holidays.

(I only renoticed them when I was digging in Devices.txt and thought they had been resurrected by SuSE:-) I should also add that ttys0 and ttyp0 etc. are the old BSD style pseudo ttys, and any new code should use the Unix98 ptys. With the old BSD ptys your program has to find an unused pty by trial and error, whereas the Unix98 ptys are auto-magically created for you very simply (see man 4 pts)

Ximian Desktop on SuSE 9.0 -- broken GDM

Last night I saw on http://ximian.com/ that Ximian Desktop 2 was released for SuSE 9. Being the inquisitive type, I logged into Gnome and installed it. Everything went well... there were a couple issues with permissions, but everything seemed to work fine. In the installation process I was asked if I wanted to replace kdm with gdm, and I said yes. Later, I ran Online Update through YaST. It notified me of a patch for gdm, so I went ahead and installed it. Upon reboot, I discovered that the Session Manager was completely scrambled. Trying to log into any non-kde wm actually brings me into kde. (for example, I click on "Session", select gnome (ximian) then log in and get put into KDE) The only way I can get back into gnome is by selecting "Fail Safe Gnome" So, how can I change this behavior? I'm guessing that there's a config file somewhere that's been scrambled, but so far I haven't been able to find it. Thanks, Mike

"A nasty bit of rough" by David Feherty ** hiyas guys and gals, this is in the line of inquiry "do I want to get involved in this, or not"? IS anyone running the 2.6 kernal, from the suse 9.0 disks ? And, have you noticed anything specifically good or bad about it ? I *think* I should be able to install it along w/ the default 2.4.x .x etc. At least I think that is how we were able to play around w/ ( tinker w/, test , etc.) 2.4 when it came out but wasn't deemed stable enough to use for a production box... I am looking forward to the 2.6 kernal as many reports seem to indicate that things that make the penguins work even better , faster and w/ more muscle are included in it. I'd really like to hear any reports from someone who actually has the thing running and can make a comparison between the two kernals . Sendmail Configuration Files

Hi Group, I have a couple of questions related to the setup of sendmail on SuSE 9.0. I am an old-time user of RedHat and with the recent changes in their distribution model, I decided to move over to SuSE. Having said that, I have been pleasantly surprised at the product and want to start switching some servers away from RH over to SuSE. Alas, I have run into a snag. It appears that SuSE has a custom system to look after configuring sendmail. I have found some of the files involved, and can see where Yast2 would be looking after these. The problem I have is that we have completely customized sendmail.mc files and there does not appear to be any way to integrate these into the system that SuSE uses. My questions would be; Is there a way to integrate a sendmail.mc file into the sendmail system on SuSE 9.0? All other systems use the sendmail.mc as a start point for creating the sendmail.cf, and as mentioned above, that is the way we have standardized our mail systems. Second, if there isn't a way to inetgrate the file into SuSE, is there a way to setup the files so that we can manually, or via scripts, generate the sendmail.cf file? I tried a couple of dry runs, and it appears that the directory structure being used for the files used in creation of sendmail.cf/submit.cf are not standard. gnutella firewalled on 6346

I have SuSEfirewall2 configured with port 6346 open but gtk-gnutella tells me that I'm firewalled and no one can connect to me nor can I connect to anyone else. Can someone help? Thanks. SuSe 8.2. Hello friends, I set my *shared memory size* to just 4 MB and the "shadows" is gone. THE PROBLEM: I have *just 4 MB* (from 256 available) for my video card (onboard — I´m using a pcchis m598lmr). My BIOS can't reserve more than 8MB. Ugly fonts

Hi, I did an FTP install of Suse 9. I am running KDE, but unless I choose antialiasing of fonts for all sizes, the fonts look very jagged and ugly, (more than I have seen on any Linux before). With antialiasing it looks better of course, but the problem then is that my system runs slower. For example, if I do "find . " in konsole, I can't switch tab easily, like I could on my previous version. Probably because the system becomes very busy with antialiasing and thus becomes less responsive. Is it possible to turn of antialiasing and still get decent fonts? adsl and suse9, waiting for pado

Hello list, Having troubles getting adsl up with suse9. I am using pppoe (is this correct??), adsl modem is a speedtouch, and this one needs a login-name and password (modem is on 10.0.0.138, my networkcard eth0 is 10.0.0.150, ping is possible). Last thing I see in the logs is: pppd(0): Sending PADI Waiting for PADO. Check your setup and cables and try again. SUSE ver 9 & http ? inc. Bastille

Not sure how to word this, but some time ago there was a thread about Firewall 2 when enabled shutting down traffic, searched the archives since before 9.0 ws released and can't find the threads for the life of me !! Would anyone perhaps remember what changes were needed so I can enable my firewall w/out hindering http requests? It's not browser or email client specific, as neither will reach when the firewall is enabled, stop it via the run editor and all is well.. I have done all the security updates available(afaik,via yast). In re: to Bastille, saw mention that a symbolic link ws missing in this app, downloaded the patch via yast here as well, but no luck getting this to work either..must be run as root perhaps, w/the command "InteractiveBastille", as ws the case with Mandrake a few years ago...anyone out there running Bastille? editing the K menu

Hi everybody. I've discovered that I've lost the ability to edit my K menu under SuSE9.0. Specifically, I can make changes in KmenuEdit, but the changes are never applied - yes, I clicked on the "apply" button. Is there a file somewhere in $HOME/.kde that holds these entries, which may be corrupted? /dev/ttyS0 and /dev/ttys0 - What's the difference?

Greetings Sages... I have been trying (successfully, I'm pleased to say) to get a serial connection going for my telescope. In the process, I came across both / dev/ttyS0 and /dev/ttys0. Now, ttyS0 is clearly the serial port (=COM1) since that's the device which works and the other gives me an error. BUT, what is ttys0 (etc...) for? Indeed, why are there soooooo..... many unused and apparently useless devices in the /dev directory? Secondly, /dev/ttyS0 has group uucp, and group rw privelidge by default (at least that's how I found it). My user is also in group uucp, but I recieved read/write permission denied on the device until I set it to rw-rw-rw- Cound this be because I'm distributing login with NIS? 8.2 Personal to 9.0 Personal: a downgrade?

I've recently "upgraded" from 8.2 Personal to 9.0 Personal. I was dismayed to discover that some programs I often use, specifically "locate" and "emacs", had been deleted from my system by the transition (and were not included on the 9.0 Personal CDs). I can understand the programs not being on the CDs, but actually deleting them from my system without warning seems to me to be a very unfriendly and unwise thing to do. At least I should have been given the option of deleting them or keeping them. I don't know what else is missing, either. Has anyone else encountered this behavior? Paul Abrahams

Problems installing with diferent drivers

Hi. I'm a newbe to SuSE. I downloaded the .iso file to install via ftp, but the install program stalls no matter what kind of instalation i run (safe mode, etc...). It seems to have a problem with a ide device, for it hangs at the messege: reading info ide1.3 or something like that. So I decided to install the thing manualy. I had installed debian on another computer, so it shouldn't be that dificult. As it turns out, my network card isn't listed (genius lan). In other mailing lists i found out that the NE2000 driver could work, and the other OS installed is using a realtek driver. Anyhow, for both drivers -wich are listed, or at least similars ones- the sistems gives a messege like: insert parameters for <driver>. So: i.- How do I now what parameters to give?, ii.- How do I now the sintaxis to use?, iii.- where can that information be found? I'd appreciate any help. Firewall2 settings to allow SLIMP3 server to work?

Hi Gang, My SUSEFirewall2 (SF2) seems to have decided to block my SLIMP3 server s/w from talking to my SLIMP3 player attached to my SMC Barracade Router/gateway. SLIMP3 server runs here on SUSE 8.2 at 192.xxx.xxx.xx0. The SMC gateway is 192.xxx.xxx.254, and the player itself is 192.xxx.xxx.xx9 .The player listens on port :9000 (and the server sends on port :9000) This all works perfectly when I use YASTs Runlevel Editor to stop the 3 segmentas of the SF2, and it fails to play when I start SF2 (via Runlevel Ed). I have used YASTs SF2 firewall dialog to add port 9000 to the 'expert' config section, but SLIMP3 still fails when SF2 is 'ON' and works when it is 'OFF'. Help! I feel somewhat exposed w/o the SF2 even tho the SCM is also a FW. Happiest Holidays to All!! Courier Imap and relay-ctrl trouble

Hello Everybody I am trying to setup relaying based on IMAP authentication. I am using suse 9 with courier imap server and qmail. I am using relay-ctrl to setup selective relaying. The problem is that relay ctrl creates the file n the relay allow directory even if authentication fails. After some debugging I found out that the env variable AUTHENTICATED is set but the courier imaplogin program even if the user's authentication failed. Anybody have any insight to this problem. YaST's Network Services Host Configuration

Hi, Using SuSE9.0 Apache2 I have multiple vhosts listening on a single ip addr. and via YaST have named these alias respectively, however every few days they disappear and I don't know why? localhost is also an alias for this ip addr. (which doesn't disappear) since I am using SSL and haven't worked out how to get SSL to work correctly with the other vhosts, i.e I get an unexpected termination error - whereas at one stage it did work but just moaned that the server name's didn't match. tia.

Sound problem solved

After upgrading from 8.2P to 9.0P, my sound was lost even though the sound card was recognized correctly. Eventually I got the sound back by running the alsaconf program (and, as I remember, going with the defaults). This might be useful info for others living in silence. Paul Abrahams

I can ping nothing excet myself and the brodcasts IP 0, 255. The network card has been properly identified by it cant work. PS. When i installed the suse the network is allive but if i reboot the machine the it disappears. Can't select multiple dipsersed cells in OpenOffice.org 1.1 Calc

Ctrl-Clicking does not select multiple disperesed cells, it just selects the next one I click on as if the Ctrl is doing nothing. Shift-Clicking doese select a range as it is supposed to though. This happens both with the oo1.1 downloaded from openoffice.org that I installed on my SuSE Linux 8.2 boxes, and with the OpenOffice 1.1 that came with SuSE Linux 9.0 and was installed on 9.0 with YaST. another sa-learn question

I run spamassassin systemwide i.e. from /etc/procmailrc and use global settings. If I run sa-learn as root, the stuff wil go to /root/.spamassasin/, right? So will spamassasin be able to read those "learned" data, or do I need to put it elsewhere manually? Thanks Hans

Suse 9.0 and nforce2 board

My system is as follows: -Epox 8rda+ motherboard with a nforce2 chip-set <cries> -Linksys LNE100TX network card (because I couldn't ftp install with the nforce2 onboard LAN). -ATI Radeon 9600pro video card. My onboard sound is AC97 and was recognized and functioning on install. My problems are, when I try to get my agpgart working for my video card (by following nvidia's install instructions for the rpm install), my sound stops working (I believe nvaudio is installed and my AC97 poofs), my network stops working (nvnet overrides my Linksys card) and I can't correctly patch my kernel for agpgart which is all I want to do in the first place lol. For the patching the agpgart problem, when (as per nvidia's instructions) I'm in /usr/src/linux-2.4.21-144 (I'm assuming this is the Linux kernel source directory I installed from the beginning) and type 'patch -p1 < linux-2.4.21-144-agpgart.diff' I get a file/directory not found. When I look around for this file I find a 2.4.20 version of agpgart.diff a few directory trees further inside my /usr/src directory. I can't believe how much I have learned about Linux already and I still know nothing :). TIA Craig Lien

Various problems (DVD sound, alsa, tiny fonts) have been fixed!

Hi all, Thought I'd let you know that I got the following fixed: 1) Kaffeine now happily outputs sound for DVD. I changed the sound server from "auto" to "arts" and enabled the arts server under the Control Center --> Sound and Multimedia --> Sound. I then went to the shell and attempted to find the command to turn on the sound server. I typed as root "artsc-config". That didn't output anything to the screen, but it seemed to turn something on and now it works. Just for kicks, I rebooted the system to make sure it wasn't a fluke. It worked again! 2) Alsa is now fully accessible from the shell. I installed the ncurses-devel file and that helped install the various ncurses utilities that alsa has, such as alsamixer, alsaconf, etc. 3) Tiny fonts have been fixed. For some reason, when I tried to change the horizontal (or was it vertical?) frequency, sax2 did not get the correct parameters from the monitor about the screen size. Fortunately, YaST made an original file under a different filename. I beileve it was "conf.yastsave". I deleted the current conf file, copied conf.yastsave to conf, and it works like a champ again! I also fixed the boot problem that I've been having. Every other boot to SuSE, it would hang at "Loading keymap us.map.gz". I went to YaST --> Misc --> Editor for etc/sysconfig files, and went to the relevant entry for the keyboard. I then cleared out the entry for the keymap (it was set to "us.map.gz") and rebooted the system. It now boots every time, and it is also significantly faster because I turned off postfix and hwscan, neither of which was needed for my system. Hope this helps! Resizing ReiserFS

Hi everyone, Can I resize my / patition? I installed 8.2 to a large (100gb) drive and would like to reduce the / partion to something more manageable. I tried to resize with Yast/Partitioner, got a message advising me that resizing ReiserFS is possible, but has not been very well tested. I proceeded, but then got a message that this cannot be done on a mounted partition. Can I unmount a running / partition? Another option would be to run a dos/windows based partiting program to reduce the size, but I am unsure what effect this will have on the operation of 8.2. Thanks for any suggestions. Jim Flanagan

Minor Pysol annoyance

Hello list, I have noticed that Pysol that comes with 9.0 has a issue with saving the preferences that you set. For example, my wife wants to turn off the sound (she does not want to listen to the music I guess) but that option does not stay selected. I looked for the configuration file for it in her home dir and found it to be read/write but still this behavior continues. Any clue on how to get Pysol to keep the settings? Hi list, As way of background I am running SuSE 8.2 Pro. Instead of using the gkrellm RPM, I am trying to install it from source. The version I have is gkrellm-2.1.13. DVD-Writer question(s)

basically, "which one(s) work?" I 've been shopping for one for my dad for christmas [but since he's running windows 2k, "compatability" isn't a big issue...] and found a pretty good price on a sony DRU-510a, so I got him that one. I'm curious, though, if there is any/good linux support for this drive [so I can watch for it at an "after christmas sale" for myself :) ] AS I was considering which one to get, some "guy off the street" started giving his unsolicited advice which seemed to vaguely dis the sony unit and mildly praise a pioneer one [which was about $10 cheaper, actually -- I'll get to why I didn't go with that in a moment] saying something about downloadable "hacks" that improve the pioneer drive. While I don't recall him saying it directly, after he left someone commented on the fact that he said he worked for pioneer... [hence the first red flag as to his "believability"] As it turns out, the sony drive has a larger buffer *8mb vs 2mb) and some other "bundled software" that I think is more appropriate for what my dad will be using this for, so I stayed with the sony unit for him. I have a USB hard drive that, for whatever reason, isn't partitioned in the "traditional" manner -- I have to mount it without the partition number, i.e., "/dev/sda" instead of "/dev/sda1". Unfortunately, the "hotplug" service that automatically creates an entry in /etc/fstab defines the device and mount point with a number -- how/where do I configure this to "not do that" [preferrably "for this device only"] in case anyone is wondering, the device is a "netdisk" external drive -- these things have a USB and RJ-45 connector and are designed to simply "plug into a network", however the linux drivers are "red hat only" [and semi-proprietary], so I have to use the USB connection (which works just fine...) -- Yet another Blog: http://osnut.homelinux.net

I was paying attention to other things last month, so I missed a lot of the discussion about installing vmware with 9.0. I have 9.0 on a desktop now and will have it on my laptop when it comes back from repair. I just downloaded the current VMware 4.0.5. I have it ready to install on the desktop now. Looking over the mailing list archives as well as SDB I found out about the kernel modules, plus something about acpi. I have data on my virtual partition I can't afford to be without much longer. Is there a resource I can go to?

Editing menus

I am running 8.0 and have a menu question. When the menu editor under KDE is run it only shows certain apps in the 'Start Application' hierarchy. Many items available from there do not show up in the editor. I seem to recall a more complete editor in earlier releases but don't know where it is, if it is still around. There are always apps in Suse that are on the menus but you can't start from there, yet can from the command line. This is often just a misconfiguration in the menu. Can anyone point me to a more complete menu editor or procedure? Thanks. Scott

Hi all, I've searched high and wide for an answer to my question, but I couldn't find it. Maybe I'm looking in all the wrong places (Google, list archives)? Anyway, I successfully got SuSE 9.0 personal playing DVD's with kaffeine. I did have great sound. Now, I don't have sound anymore! Under Totem, it works fine. I played other media files, and there is sound as well. I checked the volume levels for Kaffeine, and it seems to be okay, just no sound at all. Hi, I've setup new PC for family member (MS user) with SuSe8.2 and installed mozilla 1.5. She used to send ecard quite a lot but the url she used to go to doesn't want to play midi music. I've tested plugins for midi and it works just fine, I have java plugins 1.4.2 installed too. I've checked the page source and see it's java based but as I don't know anything about java I'm clueless. Below are first few line from that page, perhaps it's done the way mozilla 1.5 is not supported? Is there anything I can do besides install other browser then mozilla. Loads of problems upgrading to 2.4.18-10GB

After some tidying up initial problems (I could not boot because the instructions forgot to remind me to create a new boot floppy; once I solved that, startx was not working), I have 3 remaining problems: (a) My USB keyboard does not work, so I am using a borrowed regular keyboard at the moment. I suppose the problem is that there is no usbkbd.o module in the drivers like there was in 2.4.10-10GB. It is in the source, so how do I compile it? Any other missing dependencies? (b) My scanner is no longer detected. If I do scanimage -L, I get: No scanners were identified. If you were expecting something different, check that the scanner is plugged in, turned on and detected by the sane-find-scanner tool (if appropriate). Please read the documentation which came with this software (README, FAQ, manpages). In the xconsole I get: Dec 21 23:19:16 linux kernel: usb_control/bulk_msg: timeout Dec 21 23:19:16 linux kernel: scanner.c: write_scanner: NAK received. It means the "X" to close the wndow is just off the screen, which is very annoying, though not as serious as the other 2 problems. It is like the system thinks my screen is bigger than it is. Any ideas what to do? Any help appreciated. If not a solution to the above, how do I get back to using my old kernel? I have the lib diretcory for it still and also the sources. the security problem was probably no big deal for my PC as my firewall rules keep all externally-originated traffic out. Problems with proxyarp

I can't seen to delete a proxyarp entry on SLE 9.0 with /sbin/arp -i eth0 -d x.x.x.x pub. It seemed to work ok on SLE 8. Has the syntax changed or do I need to use a different method or is the arp coammand broken. Gary Ernst

GRUB and FreeBSD

I've got SuSE 9.0 with GRUB as bootloader and want to also boot FreeBSD. Did the install of FreeBSD into /dev/hda3 and added this to menu.lst: title FreeBSD 5.1 root (hd0,2,a) kernel /boot/loader But I get "filesystem type unknown, partition type 0xA5. Error 17: cannot mount selected partition". File Saving Problem with OpenOffice Spreadsheet

While experimenting with Open Office at home, view to using it in the office instead of M$ Office, there was a problem saving a large soreadsheet using the version of OpenOffice packaged with SuSE 9.0. A sheet containing 6 columns and 31,000 rows of data could not be saved. The saving process does start but does not finish. Oddly, on a windows machine using OpenOffice, teh problem does not occur. The only difference is that the windows version was downloaded from OpenOffice's web site. After deleting the software using YaST2 and downloading and installing the latest version from OpenOffice's website, the problem was solved. I have quadrupled the data, 18 columns by 32,000 rows of data and file was saved. If anyone else is having this problem, this might help. Regards. LW999

Tried suggestions from Marshall Heartley with no success. Booting from CDROM rescue Rescue lgin: root Rescue:~# mount /dev/hda6 /mnt cd /mnt chroot try 'chroot --help' for more information. Do the chroot --help and from what I understand from it, I do chroot newroot /mnt/usr/sbin/grub-install /dev/hda chroot: cannot change root directory to newroot: No such file or directory. I can do a ls /man/usr/sbin/grub-* and see the file. If I do chroot newroot ls /man/usr/sbin/grub-* I get the same error as above. Checked 4 linux books, there is nothing on chroot. Checked the web, all there is are man pages which do not help more than the chroot --help. Any suggestions? Art -- Sent using SuSE Linux and Ximian Evolution.

When I try to upgrade gabber using synaptic I get this error message: /usr/sbin/synaptic: relocation error: /usr/sbin/synaptic: undefined symbol: _ZN15pkgVersionMatchC1ESsNS_9MatchTypeEi This undefined symbol causes synaptic to crash. Anyone know why? The command line says: # apt install gabber Reading Package Lists... Done Building Dependency Tree... Done Some packages could not be installed. Sharing Local Folder in Mozilla

Is there a way to share my Local folders for Mozilla Mail. My Suse 9.0 is Mozilla 1.4 and Win2k Pro is Mozilla 1.5. I've set it so that the Local Folders are on a FAT32 Partition but as far as I can see, there is no way to import the settings/local folders between the two different Mails. Am I missing something? lftp chokes on empty directories

I've emailed the list a couple times about not being able to fully sync with the update mirrors, but I finally figured out why. I run the following command to do this: lftp -c 'mirror -e -vvv ftp://ftp.solnet.ch/mirror/SuSE/i386/update/8.2/ /data/suse/8.2/updates/i386/update/' The problem is that it always chokes when it hits the rpm/i686 directory, which is empty. I can lftp to it by hand just fine, but when it's running in mirror mode, it thinks the fact that it doesn't see anything in the directory means that it got disconnected, and keeps trying to reconnect. This looks like a plain-and-simple BUG in lftp, and I guess there's nothing to do about it. It's only started doing this in the past month or so, so I'm guessing that the latest update broke this for me. I guess the question I have now is: How do people script wget to do the same thing? intel 865 video card and kde control center SIGSEGV problems

as someone who just did his very first suse 9 personal edition install, i have two issues. first, this system is a standard dell with an intel 865 (i810) video card, and dell E772p monitor that absolutely refuses to support a fairly standard 1024x768 at 16 colors. i can get 640x480 at 16 colors, or 1024x768 at 8 colors (which looks horrible with smudges all over the screen). i find it hard to believe that a fairly new system would be incapable of supporting a basic 1024x768 at 16 colors. has anyone else set up a system with this combination of video card/monitor? (i've already gone into the BIOS and given 8M to video, so that's not an apparent problem.) second problem: when i run the KDE control center, i get the ubiquitous SIGSEGV (11), which i normally associate with actual HW memory problems. during the install, i did download and install all of the updates that were available. is this a known issue? i'm about to start going through the mailing list archives, but if anyone can give me some pointers, that would be great. rday

SuSEconfig Manual Entries Sync

SuSE Professional Ver 9.0 Current Fixes/Patches/Updates I understand that when I make a manual entry into a config file maintained by SuSEconfig, it will skip this configuration file in the future and leave a file called whatever.SuSEconfig. I would like to re-sync SuSEconfig so that It again checks and configures a file that was adjusted outside SuSEconfig. I've tried to delete the whatever.SuSEconfig file and run SuSEconfig, which restores the file and reports that the original has been modified. I've also tried copying the modified file to the whatever.SuSEconfig file, with no joy. I've looked at file permissions and didn't see any obvious differences. What am I missing, how do I sync these again so that SuSEconfig will take back ownership and maint? Thank you for any assistance. I am failing miserably to get tripwire set up and initialised on 9.0. The problem is with twadmin, which I cannot get to create a configuration file. I have tried on several systems but all behave identically. Working through the cookbook found at /usr/share/doc/packages/tripwire/README.SuSE as root. Hello, Installing SuSE 9.0 on a Gateway 920 succeeds only up to the 'hardware detection' phase during which the system crashes and requires a cold-boot. Upon reboot the system works but various elements remain unconfigured, like keyboard language (was set to 'de', so none of my accounts logged in, originally thought it was an NIS problem!) in /etc/X11/xkbd. I do not know how much of the rest of my system remains unconfigured, but I do know that if I try to use YaST to go to the 'Graphics Card' module my system freezes again. I believe the 920 has a ServerWorks chipset with onboard ATI Rage XL video. I know the 920 series was certified for 8.x, however perhaps it is no longer compatible with 9.0? Help! Thanks, Stephan

PCMCIA cardbus network card on 9.0

I have a Realtek RTL8139 based cardbus card 10/100 card which is correctly identified under YAST2, and set up as eth-pcmcia automagically. Despite this the system doesn't then seem to know then how to use it. cardinfo simply recognises it as a cardbus card with no details, and ifconfig does not list it as an interface. Plugging in an old Dynamode 10Mb card using the same eth-pcmcia driver works fine! I'm trying to get LVM working, during SuSE 9.0 install on an older machine. It has a non-bootable CD-ROM, so I'm trying to use a boot floppy. One from SuSE's side. But it appears, that the lvm_mod isn't working. Has anyone tried using LVM during install, preferrable boot or net install? Mvh, Örn

Disc insert annoyance

When I insert an audio or dvd disc, the kernel thinks I want it to be smart and recognize it and change my existing desktop shortcuts for the DVD and CD-R icons. I changed the value in the Powertweak Configuration tool for check_media. this value is at zero. I changed it to one, and the same thing happens, so I set it back to zero. Am I changing the wrong value? How do I disable this?

Just wondering if anyone have had any success getting a Prism GT PCMCIA card to work under SuSE 9.0. I been trying various settings bet can't get the card to be detected correctly. The last resort is to compile and install the drivers from wlan-ng by myself. Distributing group membership with NIS

Hi all, I've been battling with a problem accessing an external device via serial port. I have it working now, but am not entirely satisfied with the 'solution' (c.f thread "/dev/ttyS0 and /dev/ttys0 - What's the difference?") The device attaches to /dev/ttyS1, which is root:uucp:rw-rw---- so I figured a standard user would be able to access the device without problem since by default they are assigned membership of group uucp. I found that this was not the case. After much faffing, I have identified the cause as NIS. With the default setup for the min GUID as 500, the output from groups on the server is: root@gandalf:~> groups dylan dylan : dandg users dialout video uucp audio root@gandalf:~> groups fabrizio fabrizio : users dialout video uucp audio (dandg is a group I have created for controlling network shared file access GUID=500, it is the default group for the relevant users so their files are created with group dandg) on a client I get: dylan@gandalf:~> groups dandg dylan@gandalf:~> groups fabrizio users This is clearly not satisfactory. From the point of view of accessing the serial port, I could set it to rw-rw-rw, but would need to do so on every machine which the external device might be used on. Also, that isn't actually the problem. What I actually want (and indeed, expected to be the case) is that the full group membership be distributed by NIS. To this end, I have temporarily set the min GUID on the NIS maps to be 0. This has done the trick - normal users can now access the serial port - but still doesn't seem satisfactory as I notice that the groups below GUID 500 appear twice when system and NIS groups are listed in YaST. Is there a better way to accomplish my goal? Should I delete the local entries from /etc/groups (surely not since there would be no groups defined either before ypbind starts or if the NIS server is unavailable)? To a degree, I did install the mozilla series individually. The gabber package was missing a library dependency and when synaptic tried to install it synaptic crashed. What I want to know is why 'apt-get upgrade' did not upgrade the packages it downloaded upgrades for(1403). I had to use synaptic to actually get the upgrades installed. Ispell not working in kmail

When I try to use the spelling tool in Kmail (after updating ispell using apt) I get this message: ISpell/Aspell could not be started. Please make sure you have ISpell or Aspell properly configured and in your PATH. There does'nt seem to be a way to configure ispell in Kmail and the man page is no help. Any ideas on how to fix this? Does VMware 4.0 still require the apic boot parameter on SuSE 8.2? When I enable it, VMware 3.2 works, but /dev/hda starts dropping interupts, particularly during backups to /dev/hdd (IDE tape). TIA, Jeffrey

Problems Installing 9.0 on Netserver LC3 w/ NetRAID 3si Card

Hello, everyone. I just tried a couple of times to install 9.0 on a spare HP Netserver LC3 I have here. The two 9GB hard drives are mirrored via the NetRAID 3si card. I understand this card is an LSI MegaRAID 438 card, and as such have tried using the megaraid2 driver. The installation goes OK, although I had to manually select the RAID driver as it wasn't autodetected. Partitioning seems to go OK, and the packages all install, but after the first boot, there's a kernel panic. I don't see the RAID driver being loaded, and the panic occurs as the system fails to mount / from sda2. Has anyone had success with this setup ? I have an identical machine that I plan to install SLOX4.1 onto this week, and this problem concerns me somewhat. I bought the 3si card as it was the only HP RAID card that shows up in the SuSE hardware database, and it shows as being fully supported. Bye for now, Stuart.

Openvpn question...newbie asking so be patient

I got openvpn working on an simple tunnel without security via the openvpn man page. I setup static IPs for both sides. My purpose for doing this was to try to get something setup so that I can use my laptop (dhcp on dialup) to make a secure connection with my IMAP mail server at my office. 1. How do I setup this thing so that I can use a dynamic IP on my laptop? 2. In order to use openvpn I have to run the command. If I'm away on business for 2 weeks, should I run the command prior to leaving or am I missing something? 3. If I make an insecure connection, as a way to test, can I just do a direct connect to my IMAP server rather than forwarding a port from my firewall? (did this make sense). Thanks for any help. Tom

Hi, Running 9.0 Apache2 with perl enabled. Have created virtual hosts and left the default settings untouched. However even with setting options to All in the directory directive my hello.pl isn't served (but works in cgi-bin - which is script aliased by default). <Directory "/srv/www/vhosts/my.site.com"> Options All Order allow,deny Allow from all </Directory> Is there some other setting to be made too? tia.

Gnome & Gkrellm

Hi ho, I'm trying to run Gkrellm in Gnome with the following features: 1) Unfocusable (ie., it won't show up when I cycle through apps using Alt-Tab) 2) Always on the bottom layer. I'm currently using 'devilspie' so Gkrellm will show up on all workspaces and also so it won't show up on the panel, but it doesn't appear that 'devilspie' can do the 2 things above. TapeWare vs. Arkeia

Do anybody have any opinions on choice of tape backup softwares? I'm in a position where I should choose either Yosemite's TapeWare or Arkeia for our backup purposes. I've been trying to evaluate both, but I can't really see the big picture of pros and cons, so if anybody has been digging more into this and can give me some more info, I'd be very grateful! SuSE 9 Professional Overwrites RedHat 9/Shrike Install?

I started an install from my boxed SuSE 9 Professional CDs last evening and was scared off by a request to choose between New Install and Repair -- the text of both seemed to suggest possible harm to the RedHat 9 install on my notebook. I am not prepared to replace the RH9 install until I know that SuSE 9 Pro is an improvement, and I definitely do not want to lose data. The SuSE 9 LiveEval test didn't tell me much as the driver and various options are is too limited to know is SuSE 9 Pro will work well. Also, I could not boot and load from the SuSE 9 DVD install disk for some reason. Has anyone run the the New Install option of SuSE 9 Pro on top of an existing RedHat 9 install without harm to RH9? I had understood that to be so but the YaST text suggests otherwise. Thanks! doc

SuSEconfig Manual Entries Sync

I understand that when I make a manual entry into a config file maintained by SuSEconfig, it will skip this configuration file in the future and leave a file called whatever.SuSEconfig. I would like to re-sync SuSEconfig so that It again checks and configures a file that was adjusted outside SuSEconfig. SuSE Profesional Ver 9.0 Current Fixes/Patches/Updates I've tried to delete the whatever.SuSEconfig file and run SuSEconfig, which restores the file and reports that the original has been modified. I've also tried copying the modified file to the whatever.SuSEconfig file, with no joy. I've looked at file permissions and didn't see any obvious differences. What am I missing, how do I sync these again so that SuSEconfig will take back ownership and maint? Thank you for any assistance. Should I include the URL to one of the repositories (in Change Installation Source) or is it a simplier way? In what order should I pick different packages? When you upgrade this kind of "essential" part of the OS, is there something I should be aware of (besides crossing my fingers :) ??

How to set speed of eth0?

I am running SuSE8.1 pro, and I want to reduce the speed of my ethernet card to 10M half duplex. (Currently 100MB full duplex) How do I do this? I have tried YAST2, it allows me to set the IP address etc, but there is nothing about the speed? It could do it in WindowsXP, but how do I do it under SuE Linux? I was asked by my ADSL modem/router supplier to do this and a few other things in order to prevent problems with my router, which hangs sometimes. -- Frits Wüthrich <frits(a)wuthrich.cc>

I did not perform a "backup" of the old kernel. I just installed all required packages (in the readme-file at Kraxel) and everything went fine :) How could I see if YAST have renamed the 2.6 installation so that it points/says that I'm still running 2.4 ... when I should be up-and-running with the 2.6-kernel ??? 9.0 and menus

I don't know what it is about SuSE and menus but it seems like that is the only consistent problem I have with this distro. I recently installed Lazarus and the appropriate fpc compiler; no problem. I manually add "Lazarus" to one of the "Development" sub-menus and the next thing I know, the "Development" menu disappears and all the tools and programs that were under it end up scattered all over the "Applications" menu. The menu editor still shows the "Development" sub-menu but nothings under it. I tried using "kbuildsycoca --noincremental" but that was worthless. Any ideas what is causing this (I've had it happen before w/ another sub-menu but manually fixed it) and how to repair it without cutting/pasting all the stuff back? Any suggestions would sure be appreciated. Zach

Reason behind Audio help...

Hi all... Thanks for all you all's help with the audio cds. I think that I'll just stay with mp3 files, it seems easyer. For anyone that can pick up "BAYERN 2" Radio -- starting December 27 at 9 AM (09:00 German time GM +1) They are playing the "Lord of the Rings" in German (Der Herr der Ringe). This is 12 hours long and will be in 10 parts. I hope to copy it all to CD. Also starting the same day/same radio they will be playing "1001 nights" read by Libgart Schwarz, also in German. This will start at 23:05 (11:05 PM GM+1) and go till mid-night. This also have 10 shows. NIC 100 Full duplex howto

A dumb one but I can't seem to "set installation source" ... where do you do that ... I can see the people/kraxel in the Yast selection. How can I then see the content of the /kraxel ?. Is the readme placed in /kraxel ?. Oh yes I can see something from the /kraxel in Yast, but only what's installed here locally.
